John Higgins is fascinated by Stephen Hendry’s return to snooker, acknowledging that is going to be very tough for his fellow Scot but also recognising that the lengthy break from the game could have been a positive.

Hendry returns to professional snooker for the first time since the 2012 World Championship on Tuesday night at the Gibraltar Open as he makes a bid to return to the Crucible next month.

The seven-time world champion has been working hard with SightRight coach Steve Feeney to get his game back up to scratch and will put it to the test against Matt Selt in his first match for nearly nine years.

The world will be watching as the 52-year-old tries to rediscover some of his old form in Milton Keynes and Higgins will be one of those viewers.

The Wizard of Wishaw describes Hendry as his ‘hero growing up’ and is not sure how his compatriot will fare in his comeback, but would not miss it for the world.

‘It’s going to be so interesting. I’ll be tuning in, Tuesday night for him and Matt, I’m looking forward to doing it,’ said Higgins after his superb Players Championship win on Sunday.

‘He’s doing the SightRight thing and he’s obviously really excited about it, which is amazing. If he thinks he can do it, come back and compete. fair play to him.

‘It’s going to be difficult, I don’t think there’s any two ways about it, with the standard of player in the mix.

‘To be honest he wasn’t really competing to win events when he did retire anyway. Six or seven years he wasn’t getting to finals and semi-finals.

‘It might have done him the world of good, an eight or nine year break to come back completely refreshed. It’s going to be fascinating to see what happens, it really is.’

Hendry admits he doesn’t entirely know what to expect himself but is pleased to finally be taking to the table after accepting a wildcard to return to the Tour back in September.

‘I am, I’m curious to see what will happen. I’m prepared for any result really,’ Hendry told WST.

‘It’s obviously been a long time, this comeback, I’ve been getting a lot of stick from the players about how long its taken to play a match

‘If I’m going to enter the Worlds I need some kind of reference in the arena.

‘I’ve no expectations on what I’m going to do but I’ve just got to get out there and sample the match atmosphere, no fans but at least you’re on the match table.

‘I’m looking forward to it, but I’m prepared for any eventuality.’

World number one Judd Trump was somewhat sceptical about Hendry’s chances of returning with a bang, saying that the seven-time world champ will do well to just win a match.

‘It is a strange one,’ Trump said at the Welsh Open last month. ‘I don’t know whether he is coming back to take it seriously, or just as a bit of fun.

‘It is going to be tough for anyone after that amount of time off. It would surprise me if he won any games at all.

‘I think when Stephen retired the standard was already starting to go up and that caught him out.

‘I think he found it harder as Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams started to get the better of him. He found that tough to take, so I’d be surprised if he can get many results now the whole tour is of a very good standard.’

Hendry makes his return at 7pm on Tuesday 2 March against Matt Selt live on Eurosport.

Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho ‘teamed up’ for a Pepsi advert (Picture: Instagram)

Paul Pogba has sent Manchester United fans into meltdown by teasing supporters over the club’s pursuit of Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

United were desperate to sign the England international last summer but refused to meet Dortmund’s £108million asking price for the former Manchester City man.

Sancho was devastated that a move to Old Trafford failed to materialise but the Red Devils are expected to make a renewed bid for the 20-year-old this summer.

It’s set to be a chaotic summer for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, with a decision set to be made over Paul Pogba’s future.

The World Cup winner has less than 18 months to run on his deal at the Theatre of Dreams and his agent, Mino Raiola, confirmed in December that the Frenchman was unhappy and seeking to leave the club at the end of the season.

Pogba’s form over the next two months was fantastic and the midfielder insists he will not make a decision over his future until the end of the campaign.

United fans haven’t given up hope that the Frenchman could yet extend his deal and they took today’s social media post as a suggestion that he could stay at the club.

In an advert for Pepsi, Pogba is seen playing with Sancho and he jokingly captioned his post: ‘Finally on the same team @Sanchooo10’

United fans were desperate for Sancho to sign last summer and the club’s failure to land the winger after months of negotiations ensured the mood around the Red Devils was sour heading into the season.

However, Pogba’s post has reignited hope that a move for the England winger could be back on the cards, while it’s raised hopes that the Frenchman may even stick around at Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Edinson Cavani could be involved in Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace but is sweating over the fitness of other players.

The Red Devils played out a goalless draw with Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge and now travel to Selhurst Park looking to pick up three important points in the race for the top four – especially with two of their rivals, Chelsea and Liverpool, playing each other a day later.

United have been without Cavani for their last two league matches with a muscle injury, as well as the Europa League win over Real Sociedad, while Paul Pogba has also been sidelined.

While the Frenchman will definitely play no part against Palace tomorrow evening, Solskjaer hopes Cavani will be involved – likely off the bench – though he has some other injury niggles to deal with elsewhere in the squad.

‘Edi has trained this morning and hopefully there is no reaction,’ Solskjaer told United’s official website.

‘There are another couple of knocks that we have to look at, from after the [Chelsea] game, and from the season’s wear and tear.

‘It looks good. Edi has got the desire and hunger and, of course, he wants to join in, even if it’s from the bench. Hopefully he’ll say tomorrow that there’s been no reaction.’

Expanding on that in his pre-match press conference, Solskjaer continued: ‘We’ve had a light training session and we’re looking OK.

‘A couple of doubts for tomorrow, Edinson trained which is good. Let’s hope there’s no reaction and hopefully he’ll travel with the squad.’

Asked about longer term absentees Pogba and Phil Jones, Solskjaer added: ‘Paul is still not ready for us, no.

‘He’s feeling better. He’s not been training with the team yet so he’s definitely not travelling down with the team, no.

‘With Phil, he’s working really hard, he’s had a couple of setbacks and it’s the kind of injury where you have to be patient.

‘I know all about knee injuries, so I’m not sure… how long is a piece of rope? We’ll give him as much time as we can.’

Roy Keane of Manchester United shows his frustration during the FA Barclaycard Premiership match between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford on April 24, 2004 in Manchester, England.

Rio Ferdinand gave an insight into how heated Manchester United training could get during his playing days – and revealed Roy Keane once punched team-mate Chris Eagles in the face!

Ferdinand admitted there is a lot of ‘testosterone flying around’ training grounds up and down the country and that sessions could ‘switch just like that’.

The former England centre-back recalled how Eagles, who made 17 appearances during five years at Old Trafford, was eager to impress when he was playing with Keane – a club legend – in training.

Unfortunately for him, his overexcitement landed him in a world of bother with hot-headed Keane.

Speaking on the VIBE with FIVE podcast about young players coming up to train with the first team, Ferdinand said: ‘Paul Pogba when he first came used to try and hold up the ball, you know he’s strong so he used to try and hold people off. I remember Scholesy just lacing him a few times like he was a tree trunk, just chopping him down.

Paul would lay on the floor like “what’s going on?” and then Scholes just jogged off like nothing.

‘To be fair, I remember when Roy Keane punched up Chris Eagles one time. He was only a young kid. Liberties. Out of order.

‘Eagles – it was good for him – he was a young kid and Roy was coming back from injury or he didn’t play and he was training with the reserves.

‘The youngsters were in there like Eagles, Lee Martin and them boys. They’re like rats in training, getting close to people, trying to tackle and he went in late on Roy once or twice and Roy said to him, “listen, slow down”.

‘The ball comes in again, Eagles is trying to impress, trying to leave his mark on the session, left a little mark on Roy and he pulled his jersey or something like that.

‘Roy just turned around and went bang, in the jaw. Quick, short jab and Chris just stood there.

‘I was like what are you doing, what’s wrong with you? I remember coming inside and saying to Roy why are you doing that for, he’s a young kid, man?

‘He said I warned him, don’t grab my shirt, and that’s just the way it was. It was mad. That’s the thing, it could switch just like that in training. I think all training grounds are the same, there’s a lot of testosterone flying around.’

Owen has cast his eye over the midweek fixtures

Michael Owen has made his predictions for the seven midweek fixtures in the Premier League including Manchester United’s trip to Crystal Palace and Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel’s side take on the champions at Anfield after their goalless draw with Manchester United last weekend.

Fifth-placed Chelsea are just one point ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title holders, who are down in sixth position and have suffered three consecutive home defeats.

Tuchel's Chelsea remain unbeaten

Tuchel is still yet to taste defeat since taking over at Stamford Bridge and Owen feels the German boss’ unbeaten record will remain intact with a score draw at Anfield on Thursday.

‘This one is arguably the pick of the midweek matches,’ the former Liverpool and United striker told BetVictor.

‘Back at Anfield, Liverpool will be desperate to get on track after a string of poor results on home soil.

‘They welcome a Chelsea side that will no doubt be cautious. If Thomas Tuchel sets up to play on the counter, I could see them causing Liverpool problems.

‘However, if there’s one thing missing from this Chelsea side it’s a recognised number nine.

‘With that in mind, I think this one will be tight. It’s a 1-1 draw for me.’

On United’s clash against Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, Owen added: ‘Sunday’s goal-less draw at Stamford Bridge means that it’s now 20 games unbeaten on the road for Manchester United.

‘They couldn’t get their usual counter-attacking game flowing in that match, but that was down to Chelsea’s tactics more than anything else.

‘I think that could be slightly different here. On home soil, Palace are likely to play on the front foot. If that happens, I think United will once again get their reward on the counter. With that in mind, I reckon the away side will take the points, albeit by a narrow margin.’

Michael Owen's Premier League predictions

Burnley 0-1 Leicester

Sheffield United 0-2 Aston Villa

Palace 0-1 Man Utd

West Brom 1-2 Everton

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

Ruby Walsh is both ‘very sad’ and ’embarrassed’ for racing as the photograph of Gordon Elliott sitting on a dead horse continues to threaten the sport’s reputation.

Dual Grand National-winning and Cheltenham Festival record-breaking jockey Walsh describes the image – posted on Twitter on Saturday night – as ‘indefensible’.

Top trainer Elliott is ‘cooperating fully’ with an investigation into the incident by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, while the British Horseracing Authority has already placed an interim ban on his runners.

Speaking on RTE, Walsh said: ‘A picture paints a thousand words, but I think that picture only painted one – and that’s ‘indefensible.’

‘When I looked at it, I felt angry, I felt embarrassed for my sport and I felt very sad.

‘I was always taught that the duty of care to the animal is as much when it is dead as it is when it is alive – that is the way I was taught to conduct myself, and it’s the way I assumed most people within my sport would conduct themselves.’

Statements from Horse Racing Ireland, the BHA and the National Trainers Federation have made clear racing’s universal shock at seeing the picture, taken on Elliott’s gallops.

Walsh added: ‘It has huge ramifications for the sport, and I feel embarrassed for the sport and I felt very sad when I (saw) that picture that the due care and respect wasn’t given to that horse.

‘As a licensed trainer, jockey or an employee of a stable yard, you are representing the horse racing industry – and the onus is on you to act in a manner that is good for the image of racing.’

Anthony Martial has managed just seven goals this term (Photo by Ash Donelon/Manchester United via Getty Images)

Liverpool legend John Barnes believes it’s ‘time’ for Anthony Martial to leave Manchester United after the Frenchman lost his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.

The 24-year-old was handed his old no.9 shirt in 2019 and he had his best scoring season to date last term, netting 23 times in 48 matches for the Red Devils as a centre forward.

However, Martial’s form has plummeted this term since Edinson Cavani’s arrival on a free transfer and the Frenchman is no longer a starter at Old Trafford.

Martial’s managed just seven goals in 33 matches and he was not selected to start in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea on Sunday, with Solskjaer favouring Mason Greenwood and Daniel James.

Barnes believes that Martial’s failure to find a position has left him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and that it would benefit all parties if he left this summer.

‘Anthony Martial has never been a centre forward, despite Manchester United playing him there – if he can’t get a place in the starting team in his preferred wide position, following the emergence of Mason Greenwood, then maybe it is time for him to leave Manchester United,’ said Barnes.

‘Lots of clubs nowadays have benches full of superstar players, who are happy to be there, but I don’t know if Martial is one of those players, or what Manchester United’s intentions are with him.

‘I would suggest a change could be good for both him and the club if they aren’t getting what they want from him playing there.’

Martial is likely to come into the side for United’s visit to Crystal Palace on Wednesday, having featured for around 20 minutes from the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Solskjaer hopes to have Edinson Cavani back from an injury lay-off, though the Uruguayan is unlikely to be risked from the start.

Paul Pogba has recently resumed light training but the Frenchman is not expected to make a return for another fortnight.

Edinson Cavani of Manchester United warms up prior to The Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round match between Manchester United and West Ham United at Old Trafford on February 9, 2021 in Manchester, England. Sporting stadiums around the UK remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors.
Cavani should have been signed sooner, says Hughes (Picture: Getty Images)

Mark Hughes feels Manchester United signed veteran striker Edinson Cavani at ‘the wrong time’ and should have bought him half a decade ago.

Hughes, the ex-United forward, says his former club need a striker in their ‘pomp’ rather than one who is in the twilight of his career.

That said, the former Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City manager still thinks the Uruguay international is the best option available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer through the middle.

‘United have got good quality at the top end of the pitch but they need someone in like Edinson Cavani five years ago, when he was in his pomp,’ Hughes told Sky Sports.

‘United probably got Cavani at the wrong time but he’s still an outstanding centre-forward; when he plays in this team, he gives them more focus, more confidence going into his feet, and things happen around him.

‘With Martial, Rashford and Greenwood, they all want to play in any position other than through the middle.

‘They’ve all been tried down the middle, but you sense none of them really want to be there.’

Cavani has taken well to English football since arriving at Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer.

He has notched six Premier League goals in just eight starts for the Red Devils this season.

Anthony Martial, who has shared the No. 9 duties with Cavani, has only scored four in 16 starts.

Chelsea loanee Armando Broja, who is impressing at Vitesse, has set himself the lofty target of attempting to ‘surpass’ club legend Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues academy graduate has excelled at youth level and made his first and only senior appearance after coming on for Olivier Giroud in a victory over Everton in March of last season.

Broja, 19, was sent out on loan to Vitesse for the 2020/21 campaign to gain more first-team experience and has dazzled at the Eredivisie club with nine goals and two assists in 20 league games.

The Albania international striker is already looking to the future and named Drogba, who scored 164 goals for the Blues, as the player that he is looking to eclipse over his career at the west London club.

‘I was like: ‘Wow! That’s Frank Lampard, [Didier] Drogba or John Terry right in front of me’, when I would see them around,’ he told Goal.

‘I loved to take pictures with them because I wanted to be them. I wanted to be in their shoes at the top level.

‘Now I am approaching the age they were when they were playing, I want to try and surpass Drogba.

‘It might not be easy, but that’s my mentality and how I am feeling.’

Despite almost reaching double figures for goals in his first full season of senior football, Broja is still hungry for more.

‘Nine goals and two assists is good but I am never satisfied,’ he added.

‘I want to get more goals and assists to keep tallying them up.

‘I have played over 1000 minutes and I have 11 goal contributions. It is not bad but I want more goals and assists. I want to do more.’
