Joe Cole explains why he was surprised Patrick Bamford failed to make the grade at Chelsea

Joe Cole admits he was ‘surprised’ Patrick Bamford failed to make the grade at Chelsea and it has taken him so long to find his feet in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old joined Chelsea’s academy from Nottingham Forest as a teenager and was contracted to the west London club for five years but failed to make a single first team appearance under a succession of managers
Bamford was loaned out on seven different occasions to six different clubs but is only now beginning to fufil his true potential at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.
The former England Under-21 international spearheaded Leeds’ impressive promotion campaign last term and has carried on his superb form this season, scoring 13 Premier League goals, including one on his return to Stamford Bridge.
Cole was a Chelsea player when Bamford was attempting to force his way into the first team picture and was always convinced he would ultimately turn into a prolific goalscorer.

He said: ‘The loan system. it’s really pinpoint at Chelsea. They give certain players certain educations. They might send someone for toughening up in League Two send him to a manager who is going to get him to do this and that.
‘Or (they might think) he needs a bit of nurturing or confidence rebuilding and send him out to Holland where it’s more technical.
‘So he (Bamford) got the full education and went all over the place and really honed his skills.
‘The only thing that’s surprised me with Patrick is that it’s taken him this long to get to this level because as a finisher he is very, very good. Y
‘You put him in front of goal in any league anywhere in the world and he’ll put it in the back of the net.’
