Paul Merson is adamant Manchester United will never win the Premier League while Edinson Cavani is their main centre forward.

The experienced Uruguay international joined United in the summer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired.

Cavani has shown fleeting glimpses of the ability that helped him cement a reputation as one of world football’s most potent strikers, but it remains unclear as to whether the 34-year-old will remain at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season.

Earlier this week the striker’s father claimed his son was unsettled in Manchester and had his heart set on a return to South America with Boca Juniors.

Cavani subsequently appeared to downplay his reported disgruntlement with a pointed message on social media, while Solskjaer insists any decision on the player’s future won’t be made until the summer.

While United have undoubtedly made progress under Solskjaer, meanwhile, Merson believes they won’t return to the summit of English football until they find a suitable replacement for Cavani, with Erling Haaland and Harry Kane viewed as the ideal candidates.

‘I’m a big fan of his I think he’s a special player but Man Utd need to win the Premier League and you’re not going to win it with Cavani up front,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘They need to bring in a top drawer centre forward. There’s no chance he’s going to play 38 games in the Premier League and score 25 goals.

‘He was a top player but he’s not on a youth training scheme is he? He’s going to make players better but if you’re bringing in a Haaland or a Harry Kane he’s not playing and you’ve got £100k-a-week tied up.

‘I don’t think they’ve got enough money to go out and buy a world class centre forward and keep Cavani.’

Thomas Tuchel will lose patience with Timo Werner at Chelsea, claims Paul Merson

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will run out of patience with Timo Werner, according to Paul Merson.

The 25-year-old was signed in a £47.5 million deal from RB Leipzig last summer but has struggled in his first season at Stamford Bridge with 10 goals in 37 appearances.

Earlier this week, pitch-side microphones caught Tuchel tearing into Werner over his poor positioning during Chelsea’s win over Everton.

The Germany international was subsequently dropped for Chelsea’s trip to Leeds United on Saturday.

And Merson believes Werner’s place in the team is now under even more threat with Kai Havertz finally showing signs of improvement under Tuchel.

Asked if he believes Tuchel is running out of patience with Werner, Merson told Sky Sports: ‘I think so, and I think even more so after the way Havertz played last week, I thought he was absolutely outstanding.

‘He came into the No.10 position and I thought he was absolutely outstanding.

‘If you’d have said to me three months ago that Havertz is that quick I’d have said I haven’t seen it. But I saw it last week.

‘It just shows you he’s a confidence player, he looked very good.

‘I think with the way he played he will lose patience with Werner.

‘I watch Werner play and I think there’s a lot of work to be done. I think he’s a real, real rough diamond, which shouldn’t be a rough diamond when you’re paying that kind of money for someone.

‘There’s a lot to work on, I think he makes bad, bad decisions too many times in football matches. And when you’re costing that kind of money that shouldn’t really happen.

‘Havertz, I think, was absolutely outstanding. You’ve got Mount to come back, who was out of that game and he’s played his best game against Liverpool.’

Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane is having the last laugh over Gareth Bale’s worrying situation at Tottenham, insists Paul Merson.

After being frozen out of the first team at the Bernabeu, Bale returned to Tottenham during the summer transfer window on a season-long loan deal – seven years after his then-world record move to Real Madrid.

Bale won four Champions League trophies in five years at Los Blancos but his relationship with the club appeared to grow strained as the years went on, starting just 12 games in the league last season.

His return to the Premier League was greeted with excitement but the Wales international has so far failed to replicate anything close to his best form and was left on the bench by Jose Mourinho as Tottenham chased an equaliser against Chelsea on Thursday.

The Daily Mail has since claimed Tottenham players have questioned Bale’s application with patience beginning to wear thin over his work-rate.

Merson suggests we may now be seeing exactly what Zidane saw from Bale on a daily basis in training, admitting the 31-year-old is now a complete shadow of his former self.

‘When he came back to Spurs, we all questioned what Zinedine Zidane was playing at, but he’s the one laughing at Real Madrid now,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘You think back, it wasn’t long ago now when Wales qualified for the Euros and he’s holding up a banner. ‘Wales, Golf, Real Madrid.’ What does that tell you?

‘Everybody has reasons and that’s why you have to be careful with managers. They see players day in, day out and they see everything that’s going on. We only see the bit at the end, and we make our minds up on players and whether they should be playing or not.

‘The managers see everything, and Zidane would have seen it all with Bale. I don’t know what his attitude is like but when I’ve watched him play so far, bar the Wycombe game in the FA Cup – and no disrespect to Wycombe, if you are not standing out against them then you don’t deserve to be on £500,000-a-year – it’s just not there.

‘He was a great player. I don’t like using great loosely, but he was top draw. He was a real good player, but he looks an absolute shadow of that now.’
