Ian Wright has questioned why Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek and feels the midfielder’s situation at the club is becoming ‘sad’.

The 23-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax in the summer in a deal worth £40million but his playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been limited.

Van de Beek has featured mostly in cup competitions for the Red Devils and has started just twice in the Premier League, with Solskjaer favouring a midfield axis of Scott McTominay and Fred in behind main man Bruno Fernandes.

According to reports earlier this week, the midfielder is already looking to leave United in the summer, however, those claims have been refuted by Netherlands boss Ronald de Boer, who shares the same agent as the player.

Given the stark difference between Ajax’s style of play compared to United’s, Arsenal legend Wright can’t fathom why the Red Devils bought Van de Beek in the first place.

‘It’s starting to be sad, unfortunately for him, he must be pulling his hair out,’ Wright said on Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘He’s come through a youth system and academy of possession football.

‘We saw him [at Ajax] in the Champions League [semi-final last season] against Tottenham, magnificent player.

‘You look at him now with Man Utd, who do not play possession football, why did they buy the guy?

‘What is he supposed to do? What is he thinking now? I really, really feel for him.’

United have been relatively goal shy in recent weeks, scoring four goals in their last six games across all competitions.

And Wright urged Solskjaer to bolster his attacking line by signing Borussia Dortmund stars Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, both of whom have been heavily linked with moves to Old Trafford.

‘My main problem with United is the front me,’ he added. ‘Listen, go and get Haaland, go and get Sancho!

Manchester United v Southampton - Premier League

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says he was disappointed with Mason Greenwood’s failure to get on the scoresheet in Manchester United’s 9-0 win against Southampton.

The Red Devils got their title challenge back on track with a record-equalling win against the Saints, which saw eight different scorers at Old Trafford.

Greenwood ended a barren run with a goal in the FA Cup win against Liverpool last month but the teenager still has just one league goal to his name this term, despite making 16 appearances.

The 19-year-old impressed with his wing play but his failure to score felt like a missed opportunity to boost his confidence and Wright believes Greenwood needs to learn to play between the posts to score more tap-ins.

Asked if Greenwood’s failure to score was disappointing, Wright told Premier League Prodctions: ‘Yeah because he’s a forward and he needs to score at the minute.

‘I thought he did some good stuff today but even when Daniel James came on Daniel James got himself in a situation when the ball came across when Bruno Fernandes headed it back that he got himself in the middle of the goal.

‘I didn’t see Mason Greenwood in the middle of the goal too many times on a day in which there was goals to be had.’

Despite failing to find the net, Greenwood’s performance was much improved on recent weeks.

And Solskjaer even made a point of singling out the teenager in his post-match press conference.

‘Confidence is one thing but it was about the mojo and spark, the X-Factor,’ Solskjaer told BBC Sport after the game.

‘Mason Greenwood was terrific and his performance was top for a player who did not score a goal.’
