Paul Merson believes Jurgen Klopp’s job is in danger if Liverpool miss out on a place in next season’s Champions League.

The Premier League champions currently sit sixth in the table and five points behind fourth-placed West Ham ahead of their clash with Sheffield United on Sunday evening.

Klopp has already conceded defeat in the Premier League title race, meaning that a top-four finish or more success in the Champions League is needed if Liverpool are to be in Europe’s elite competition next season.

And Merson feels Klopp’s position will be under threat if Liverpool are unable to keep their status as a Champions League club.

‘[Jose] Mourinho done that to Chelsea, he gave them the Premier League and everything they wanted,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘This year I think they would’ve put that in their budget [finishing in the] top four.

‘If Leicester got into the Champions league the money would start spinning, you’d think, ‘oh my god, we got a lorry load more money’.

‘One sure thing in management is the sack.

‘This manager is a great manager but let’s be honest, if he didn’t get in the Champions League next year, we’d seriously be talking, ‘how’s he carrying on?’… you would.

‘For how great he is, and he is a great manager, and what he’s done for Liverpool, Mourinho’s done it at Chelsea.

‘If they don’t finish in the top four, I think the manager would be in trouble.

‘The manager’s a winner, he ain’t hanging around.

‘The problem is they didn’t kick on when they won the league. It was such a good team, it’s hard in this day and age.’

Chelsea summer signing Timo Werner requires ‘a lot work’ and ‘doesn’t look like a goalscorer’, according to Arsenal hero Paul Merson.

Werner, 24, was brought in from RB Leipzig last summer for £47.5million after netting 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga games last season.

But since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, the striker has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and recently went on a run of 14 top-flight games without finding the back of the net.

That barren spell was finally brought to an end when the Germany international tapped in at the back post in his side’s 2-0 win over Newcastle earlier this month.

But Werner remains on five Premier League goals for the campaign, and Merson feels Thomas Tuchel has ‘a lot of work’ to do to get him firing.

‘I think there’s a lot of work to be done with this lad,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘I know he’s been brought in for all that money.

‘I watched loads of stuff with him where he’s not even near to the finished article, not even close, times when he’ll go down the wing, he’ll literally just cross a ball and there’s no nobody in there, instead of just getting it and coming back or sizing up.

‘It seems like he’s just getting rid of the ball.

‘There’s a lot of work to be done with him at the moment, if you said to me who’s going to score the most goals I would say Tammy Abraham.

‘Tammy Abraham is a goalscorer I don’t think this lad looks like a goalscorer.’
