MK Dons v Manchester United - Capital One Cup Second Round
Jonny Evans came through the ranks at Old Trafford (Photo by Clive Mason/Getty Images)

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Jonny Evans should still be at Old Trafford and that Louis van Gaal made a mistake in selling the defender.

The Northern Irish ace came through the ranks at Old Trafford while Solskjaer was still a player at the club and Sir Alex Ferguson was fond of the centre-back.

Evans remained a regular under David Moyes but Van Gaal’s arrival was difficult for the defender and he lasted just one season under the Dutchman.

The 33-year-old joined West Brom for a measly £6m in 2015 and he showed at the Hawthorns why he was so well thought of at Old Trafford before Van Gaal’s arrival, earning himself a move to Leicester in 2018.

Evans has gone from strength to strength at the King Power Stadium and Solskjaer admits the defender should still be a Red Devil.

‘You know, Jonny Evans should have been a Manchester United player now, of course,’ Solskjaer told Goal.com.

‘But sometimes football takes you other places when changes in management happen.

‘I’m sure that Jonny Evans has feelings for Manchester United and we have feelings for him too.

‘So it is a pleasure to see him playing as well as he does and we just have to move on.

‘But of course, local lads – I call them local lads, you know what I mean – we want to build our next youth team on players like Jonny Evans, if you like.

‘With Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay and Dean Henderson and all of the lads, added on with top quality players of course.’

Evans is set to take on his former side today as Leicester host Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

United progressed to the last-eight of the Europa League on Thursday after a 1-0 win against AC Milan and Solskjaer is expected to shuffle his pack.

Paul Pogba could start after a 45-minute cameo at the San Siro, while Donny van de Beek is also available.

Alex Telles is expected to start at left-back, while Nemanja Matic could replace Scott McTominay or Fred.

Timo Werner is regarded as one of the fastest players in the Premier League but Antonio Rudiger reckons two of his Chelsea team-mates are quicker than him.

Based on the team’s FIFA 21 ratings, Werner is the fastest player in the Chelsea squad.

Rudiger, however, thinks he can beat his international team-mate for speed.

And he also backed Fikayo Tomori – who is on loan at Italian giants AC Milan – to outpace the German striker.

‘Honestly, something tells me that Fik [Tomori] and I are quicker [than Werner],’ Rudiger told SoccerAM.

‘Maybe not for the first 10 metres, but if we go, I would say it’s between me and Fik.’

Werner and Rudiger have known each other for a long time, having moved from the youth setup at Stuttgart to the first team together and the centre-back said he always knew it was a ‘matter of time’ before Werner made his breakthrough.

‘Yes, because his speed and eagerness to score goals, [these] come to him naturally,’ added Rudiger.

‘When he came up the first time [at Stuttgart], he was 16 or 17, and in training, he was so fast, so quick, and his finishing was very good at that level.

“It was just a matter of time for him to breakthrough [at highest level].’

Mirko Crocop
Mirko Cro Cop is a great in MMA heavyweight history (Picture: Getty)

Former Liverpool man Dejan Lovren was brave enough to step into the cage with MMA legend Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic but it was no surprise that the centre-back ended up tapping out pretty quickly.

The 31-year-old, who is now plying his trade with Zenit Saint Petersburg, posted a video of him attempting to grapple with the heavyweight veteran in what he described as a ‘short training session’.

The former UFC, Pride, Rizin and K-1 fighter was taking it easy on his fellow Croatian, but still threw Lovren to the ground and secured a submission with an armbar.

Lovren wrote on Instagram: ‘Had this morning a short training session against @crocop1009 What a beast this man still is. Was a big pleasure Mirko. Thank you.’

Filipovic is known as ‘Cro Cop’ as he was part of the Croatian police’s anti-terrorist unit before becoming an MMA superstar.

Mostly known for his success in the Pride organisation in Japan, Cro Cop also fought in the UFC from 2007-2011, and once more in 2015, but couldn’t replicate the success he had in Asia.

However, he did finish his epic career with a 10-fight winning streak including bouts in the UFC, Bellator and Rizin.

Meanwhile Lovren is enjoying success with Zenit after his summer move from Liverpool to Russia.

Sergei Semak’s side are top of the table, four points clear of Spartak Moscow.

Atlanta Hawks v Los Angeles Lakers
LeBron James is set for at least six weeks out (Photo by Michael Owens/Getty Images)

Los Angeles Lakers will be without star man LeBron James for the foreseeable future after he suffered a ‘high right ankle sprain’ during Saturday night’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

The 36-year-old left the game in the second quarter when he rolled his right ankle and collided with Solomon Hill.

James could be heard screeching in pain and even the most optimistic of outcomes would see the 17-time All Star missing the next six weeks.

The American has missed just one game this term and he will join Anthony Davis on the sidelines, with the star duo facing a race against time to return in time for the end of the regular season in mid-May.

‘Nothing angers and saddens me more than not being available to and for my teammates,’ wrote James on twitter.

‘Hurt inside and out right now. The road back from recovery begins now. Back soon like I never left’.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that James would be out ‘indefinitely’ with the issue.

James has been carrying the Lakers’ bid for an 18th NBA Championship and his form has seen many tipping the veteran for a fifth MVP award.

James is averaging 25.8 PPG this season, with the Lakers in second in the western conference.

Liverpool v Fulham - Premier League
Jurgen Klopp is set to lose a key player in his squad (Picture: Getty Images)

The Georginio Wijnaldum contract saga appears to be at an end with the Dutchman reportedly agreeing a pre-contract deal with Barcelona, meaining he will leave Liverpool in the summer.

The 30-year-old has been an integral part of the Reds midfield since arriving from Newcastle in 2016, making over 200 appearances for the club.

However, his contract expires at the end of the season and, although the club were keen to keep hold of him, he has decided his future lies elsewhere.

The Sunday Times reports that Wijnaldum has now agreed a deal to move to Barcelona, joining fellow Dutchman, and manager at the Camp Nou, Ronald Koeman.

It has been a turbulent season for the Reds as they struggle in the Premier League, surrendering their title quite meekly, but Wijnaldum has been a steady presence in the team.

The former PSV and Feyenoord man has started 27 Premier League games this campaign and, while there has been chopping and changing in the team amid an injury crisis at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp described Wijnaldum as his most consistent player.

GettyImages-1304940818-2
Wijnaldum has enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Liverpool (Picture: Getty)

‘I think the most consistent player this season probably is Gini Wijnaldum,’ the German said earlier this month.

‘Long may it continue, he’s played the six and all the other positions and these kinds of things.’

Wijnaldum has won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool but now fancies a new challenge as Koeman looks to rebuild Barcelona into La Liga and Champions League challengers again.

Barca are out of Europe’s top competition already this season and are still in the hunt for the La Liga title, but remain four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

Koeman admitted that he wanted to sign Wijnaldum last summer, saying: ‘It is true he was on my list.’

Now he will be snapped up on a free transfer, he will be delighted to finally get his man.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a new right winger (Picture: Getty)

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto has emerged as a summer transfer target for Manchester United as an alternative to long-term interests Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish, but would still cost at least £50m.

The 21-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks in a disappointing season for Wolves, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 29 Premier League appearances.

With Sancho and Grealish both likely to be valued close to £100m in the transfer market, the Portugal international could represent a cheaper option for the Red Devils as they look to add a right winger to their squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been looking to fill that position for some time, with Sancho the long-expected cure for his problem, but with Borussia Dortmund not moving on their £100m valuation, the England international is unlikely to move.

Grealish is certain to leave Aston Villa at some point, and it may well be this summer, but Manchester City are also interested in his signature and could beat their local rivals to the Villa captain.

Neto could be next in line on the Red Devils transfer wish list, with the Sun reporting that United are also keeping an eye on Leeds United’s Raphinha and Sporting’s Pedro Goncalves.

Raphinha, 24, has been impressive for the Yorkshire club and has also been linked with a switch to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Goncalves was at Wolves as a teenager but returned to his homeland of Portugal with Famalicao and is now impressing in his first season with Sporting, scoring 15 goals in just 22 Premeira Liga games this campaign.

He has a release clause of £51.5m, which is thought to be a similar price tag to Neto, who only turned 21 earlier this month.

Bukayo Saka has become a key player at Arsenal (Picture: Getty)

Mikel Arteta has admitted he is concerned over Bukayo Saka’s workload for Arsenal and England as the 19-year-old prepares to return from injury against West Ham on Sunday.

The versatile Gunners star has quickly become a key player for Arteta, making 33 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring six goals.

England boss Gareth Southgate has also been impressed with the teenager, capping him four times for England over 2020 and calling him up for the three upcoming World Cup qualifiers over the next two weeks.

Saka picked up a hamstring injury in the north London derby win over Tottenham last weekend, missing the Europa League match against Olympiakos on Thursday, but is already back in contention to play the Hammers on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being rushed back pretty rapidly, Arteta admits that he is concerned that Saka may be playing too much and insists he will make the ‘right call’ as to whether he features or not.

The Spaniard was asked if holds fears over Saka’s workload and said: ‘Yes, but that’s why we need some really good communication between ourselves and the player and the national team.

‘I know how important he is for us and for the summer with England, so let’s make the right call and let’s think about the short term but the future as well.

‘It’s about the support, guidance, education and coaching we give them and then the other factor is how they deal everything that happens externally.

‘In order to do the best as well, his family and entourage is key.

‘Bukayo is lucky that he has the right people around him and that’s going to be really important for him.’

Arsenal’s only other injury concern at the moment is Willian, who may miss the trip to east London on Sunday, but otherwise Arteta has plenty of options at his disposal if he doesn’t want to risk Saka.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe, Gabriel Martinelli, Reiss Nelson and Dani Ceballos are all available to Arteta as part of his front four.

Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford is not fully fit ahead of the big game on Sunday (Picture: Getty Images)

Marcus Rashford could miss Manchester United’s trip to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday evening after picking up an injury against AC Milan on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old could also miss England’s upcoming trio of World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland if he does sit out Sunday’s match.

The exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed, with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just describing it as as ‘twinge’ after the 1-0 win in Milan which saw the club progress to the Europa League quarter-finals.

While the forward could still make an appearance at the King Power on Sunday, Solskjaer is far from certain and would hope he doesn’t go to play for England if he doesn’t make it this weekend.

‘I don’t know to be honest. He struggled a little bit in Milan and came off so he’s doubtful for Sunday, but we hope he will be okay,’ Solskjaer said of Rashford.

‘As for England I don’t know.

‘Of course, if he can’t play for us then it is more difficult to go and travel with England because then the injury is more serious than just a day or two.’

Rashford was taken off at half-time against Milan, replaced by Paul Pogba who went on to score the only goal of the game just two minutes later.

At the time Solskjaer didn’t sound too concerned, saying: ‘With Marcus yeah he had a little twinge. We couldn’t take a risk with him but hopefully he won’t be too bad.’

Edinson Cavani is also a doubt for the quarter-final clash as the veteran striker remains short of match fitness, despite returning to training.

‘With Edinson, he has worked really hard, he’s joined in training sessions and towards the end he needs to top it up to feel 100 per cent ready for the game and hasn’t really got there yet,’ said the manager.

Manchester United Training Session
Edinson Cavani has been training but is not fully fit (Picture: Getty Images)

‘It’s down to him, he wants to be 100 per cent when he joins in, he doesn’t want to come in and look off the pace.

‘Hopefully he can be ready for Sunday but I’m not sure either, because after training yesterday he felt something and couldn’t train with us.’

Anthony Martial is yet another doubt for Solskjaer up front, with a hip injury keeping him out of the lasts two games, but the Frenchman could still play on Sunday.

‘He was close to being fit for this one but couldn’t make it,’ said Solskjaer on Thursday. ‘Hopefully he’ll make Sunday. I’m not sure because it’s not reacted how we hoped.’

Virgil van Dijk
Van Dijk eager to play in the Euros this summer (Picture: Getty)

Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool are set to clash over the defender’s plans to lead the Netherlands into this summer’s European Championships.

Van Dijk has missed most of the 2020-21 season after suffering a career-threatening anterior cruciate ligament injury against Everton last October.

The Dutchman is not expected to play again this season with Jurgen Klopp eager for his defensive rock to get a full pre-season under his belt in preparation for the 2021-22 campaign.

The Mirror report however van Dijk is determined to play at the Euros this summer – plans which are said to have ‘horrified ‘ Klopp and his medical team.

Van Dijk has been stepping up his return in recent weeks and is running once again but Liverpool are adamant his return will be for club – not country.

Jurgen Klopp
Klopp not impressed with the Dutchman’s plans (Picture: Getty)

Netherlands boss Frank de Boer is said to have already promised the former Celtic defender a place in his squad.

The delayed Euros gets underway on 11 June, with Netherlands beginning their campaign two days later against Ukraine.

29-year-old van Dijk has been warned over rushing his return, with orthopaedic surgeon Bas Pijnenburg believing the Dutchman will be taking a considerable risk if he is to play in the Euros.

‘A considerable risk,’ Pijnenburg told NOS when asked about the risks involved with Van Dijk playing for the Netherlands this summer.

‘It takes just as long for a top athlete to recover as it does for any other person.

‘What makes it dangerous is that a knee can quickly feel good for a top athlete. The muscles and coordination may already be good, but recovery is still in full swing.

‘Starting too early would also send a bad signal to other people who have had this surgery.’
