Liverpool send class message to Steven Gerrard as Rangers win SPL title
Liverpool have sent their congratualtions to club legend Steven Gerrard after his Glasgow Rangers side were officially crowned SPL champions on Sunday.
Celtic’s goalless draw against Dundee United confirmed what had appeared destined for months just 24 hours after Rangers had swept to a 3-0 win over St Mirren.
Gerrard won seven major honours during the course of his storied Anfield playing career, but a league title infamously evaded him. It has taken him just two-and-a-half years as a manager, however, to mastermind the downfall of Rangers’ Glasgow rivals ending a period of domestic dominance that had lasted a decade.
In recognition of Gerrard’s achievement, Liverpool tweeted: ‘Congratulations from all of us at Liverpool FC to Steven Gerrard and his team on winning the Scottish Premier League title.’
Those sentiments were echoed by Gerrard’s former teammate Jamie Carragher, who earlier this week tipped the former England international to remain at Ibrox for many years to come.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League match against Fulham on Sunday, Carragher said:
“They must have been terrified for years that record would have been beaten by Celtic,” he tells Sky Sports. ‘When Gerrard came in, that was the name of the game to stop Celtic achieving that.
‘They’ve come a long way, but they’ll be hoping the glory days are back. He’s done a brilliant job. They were so far behind Celtic when he first came in.
‘I think the European campaigns have been the big boost – certainly financially to help him reinvest in the squad.’
Gerrard’s achievement with Rangers mirrors that of another former Liverpool icon, Graeme Souness, who enjoyed success as both a player and a manager during his time with the Glasgow giants.
‘I’m delighted for Steven Gerrard and all his team. Celtic have had a period of dominance, which has been, I’ll say, uncomfortable for us Rangers supporters.
‘They thoroughly deserve it. They’ve been fantastic all season and I just wish I was in Glasgow right now.’
