Manchester City overtake Manchester United in race to sign £100m-rated Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish

Manchester City are leading the race to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish this summer, with rivals Manchester United unwilling to meet the club’s £100million valuation of the England playmaker.
The Red Devils had been favourites to sign Grealish last summer but United were surprised by Villa’s asking price of around £80m and opted instead to sign Donny van de Beek for around £35m.
The Dutchman has struggled for form and fitness at Old Trafford, while Grealish has gone from strength to strength with a resurgent Villa side.
That form, as well as a contract extension signed last summer, has seen Grealish’s value increase to around £100m and United are unwilling to blow their budget on the 25-year-old.

In a financial market constrained by the pandemic, that leaves just a handful of clubs in world football that could afford Grealish and the Daily Mail claim City are now leading the race.
While Grealish committed to a new five-year deal with his boyhood club last summer, it only came after news that a move to Old Trafford wouldn’t materialise.
The Villa captain is fiercely ambitious and knows that he’s of the needed quality to play Champions League football.
Villa are desperate to keep Grealish but they understand the midfielder’s dilemma, with the Birmingham club unlikely to finish in the top four this term.
Grealish has spoken at length in the past about his admiration for Kevin De Bruyne and the England playmaker would jump at the chance to play with the Belgian, as well as the opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola.
