Arsenal are keen for Ainsley Maitland-Niles to develop at full-back if he joins Leicester City, Southampton or Newcastle United on loan, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has struggled to secure a regular role under Mikel Arteta this season and is keen to leave the Gunners before the 11pm transfer deadline in order to secure more playing time.

It’s understood that one of the primary reasons for Maitland-Niles’s desire to leave is also due to concerns over missing out on a place in England’s squad for the European Championship this summer.

Arsenal have held talks with Leicester, Southampton and Newcastle over a loan deal for Maitland-Niles.

And according to The Athletic, if Maitland-Niles leaves on loan, Arsenal’s preference is to see him played at full-back. However, the player is keen to impress in a midfield role.

The report also claims that Leicester is Maitland-Niles’ preferred destination out of the three Premier League clubs who have registered their interest.

Arsenal and Leicester are yet to agree the terms of the loan deal, with the Gunners looking for the Foxes to have a mandatory purchase option this summer instead of an option to buy.

It’s understood that Arsenal’s preference is for Maitland-Niles to join Southampton, and the Saints are willing to accept the Gunners’ terms of the deal.

When asked if Maitland-Niles will be leaving Arsenal, Arteta said: ‘I don’t know, I cannot speak about any individual players.

‘What we want to do, the conversations we’ve had, the various reasons. Let’s see if we can get something done tonight.’

Billy Gilmour looked set to leave Chelsea on loan in the January transfer window but has decided a stay is preferable after asssessing his options.

The young Chelsea midfielder was expected to leave in order to seek more game time in an attempt to force his way into the Scotland squad for this summer’s Euros.

Gilmour, 19, has started just three times in all competitions this season and has seen his Premier League action limited to just 34 minutes.

He was enjoying a spell in the first team under previous manager Frank Lampard but a knee injury halted his progress.

It was reported he had held talks with Southampton over a move to St Mary’s but unless things take a surprise turn he is now expected to remain at Stamford Bridge, according to The Athletic.

While Gilmour was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first two squads since succeeding Lampard, the midfielder feels like he will get his chance in the coming weeks.

Chelsea face a busy run of fixtures as they continue to compete in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League and Gilmour hopes that will lead to more opportunities for him.

More importantly, he wants to gain a sense of where he fits into Tuchel’s plans.

Rather than trying to adjust to new surroundings and impress on loan, he wants to use this period to see if he will be in Tuchel’s thoughts for next season.

If not, he will likely look to seal a season-long loan for the 2021/22 campaign.

He also believes he is still in with a shot of the Euros, even if he stays.

Gilmour is thought to be highly rated in the Scottish set-up and many believe a call-up is not far away.

Mikel Arteta is in no rush to sort a new contract for Arsenal centre-back David Luiz but revealed he talks to him ‘all the time’ about the situation.

Arteta is a big fan of Luiz, who he described as a ‘key role model’ and ‘leader’ at the club, and has been impressed by the partnership he’s forged with Rob Holding at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

While Luiz – the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain defender – has become an important part of the team, he is out of contract at the end of the season and the club appear in no rush to force through a new deal.

Asked he he’d spoken with Luiz about an extension: ‘No, there are still a few months to go on that. I all the time talk to him about this kind of thing so we’re in a good position.

‘He showed his character first of all with the decision he made to join the club when he was with a club where he was winning trophies and he was still comfortable and under contract.

‘And he wanted a challenge. And at that age it tells your everything because normally at that age the challenge is not sporting but more a financial decision that you take to go to a different country.

‘But David loves this game so much and he wants to keep playing at the highest level in a very competitive league. This is the challenge that he’s enjoying at the moment.’

When asked if he wants Luiz to stay, Arteta added: ‘What I want is for him to keep performing like this to the end of the season.’

Despite the slow progress on a new contract, Arteta has been delighted with his performances for the club this season.

‘It’s credit to him because he trains really hard,’ Arteta said.

‘This season has been really tough in the beginning because he’s been through some injuries but he’s kept at it, he understood his role, he knows his role in the team, he’s one of our leaders and he’s so willing to keep improving.

‘He knows the things that he’s really good at and the things where there is still room for improvement. He’s a really honest man with himself. He’s won everything and it’s a joy to work with him.

‘He’s a great example for them (the youngsters). He’s got a good mixture with them between some banter and then some stick.

‘They all listen to him because of who he is and what he’s done in the game. But also because how he behaves every day, how professional he is and how he goes about the job. He is one of the key role models that we have in our team.’

Liverpool had come close to signing Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car

Liverpool’s move to sign Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car collapsed on Sunday evening, according to reports in France.

The Premier League champions are looking to sign defensive cover before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday evening.

Liverpool have already agreed a £2 million deal with Preston North End to sign defender Ben Davies, who is due to undergo a medical on Monday.

But according to RMC Sport, Liverpool were also closing in on a deal for Caleta-Car before Marseille pulled the plug on Sunday night.

The report claims that the 24-year-old was ready to board a private jet to travel to England on Sunday after Liverpool had agreed an initial fee with Marseille.

But the French club ended negotiations as they believe they are unable to sign a replacement for the 24-year-old before the transfer window closes.

The Croatia international is now set to remain with Marseille until the end of the season.

Caleta-Car did close to joining West Ham last summer in £22 million deal but he opted to remain at Marseille as he wanted to play for a club in the Champions League.

When asked about Liverpool’s transfer situation after the 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp said: ‘There’s nothing to say until something is done, and that’s if anything is done.’

Liverpool moved to third in table following their win over West Ham and are four points behind league leaders Manchester City, who also have a game in hand.

Liverpool scoured Europe for the best centre-back options to solve their defensive crisis but opted for Preston North End star Ben Davies.

The Reds have been without long-term absentees Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk for the majority of the season and Fabinho and Joel Matip have both struggled with injury problems in recent weeks.

Largely untested squad centre-halves Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have helped fill in along with midfielder Jordan Henderson but Jurgan Klopp felt a new centre-half was a necessity.

While the likes of Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi and West Ham’s Issa Diop were considered by Liverpool chiefs, a £2million deal has been struck to land Davies.

Dozens of centre-backs were evaluated but Davies ticked the most boxes, according to The Athletic.

He was viewed as a great option because of his value, experience and skilset to bolster the squad.

The club received only positive character references for the 25-year-old and he has already made 250 senior appearances.

Entering the final six months of his contract, Davies was available for a very low price and the fact he is homegrown means that Klopp will swerve a tough decision over who to leave out of his revised 25-man Premier League squad.

Davies, who is left-footed, has been on Liverpool’s radar since he established himself in Preston’s team in the 2017-18 season and has previously attracted interest from the Bundesliga.

He also impressed officials at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after a solid display against them in the EFL Cup last season.

Celtic were set to sign him before Liverpool joined the race.

Once Davies heard Klopp was interested, there was only one destination in his mind.

Gilmour could leave on loan before the transfer window shuts on Monday

Billy Gilmour is reportedly in talks over a possible deadline day loan move to Southampton with the Chelsea midfielder eyeing more regular playing time.

The 19-year-old burst onto the scene under previous Blues boss Frank Lampard last season and was enjoying a successful spell in the first team until an untimely knee injury halted his progress.

Gilmour has found starts difficult to come by since his return to action earlier this campaign and has been heavily linked with a January move away from Stamford Bridge.

New boss Thomas Tuchel hasn’t included the midfielder in any of his matchday squads since being appointed as Lampard’s successor earlier this week.

Gilmour missed out completely against Wolves and Burnley, and according to the Daily Mail, he is in negotiations with Southampton regarding a last-minute switch to St Mary’s until the end of the season.

The teenager is looking to boost his chances of landing a spot in Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad this summer and the report states he has already informed the club of his desire to leave on loan before Monday’s deadline.

Lampard was a big admirer of Gilmour during his time at Stamford Bridge, and his successor Tuchel has already talked up the youngster’s ability despite being at the club for less than a week.

‘Of Billy I have a good impression,’ Tuchel said at his first press conference on Thursday.

‘He is a very strategic guy, with a very high level of game understanding, very good in the first contact, very clever in positioning.

‘We will see if he has the physical level to compete in the centre of the field in the most physical league in the world, but he is super quick with his feet, super fast with his decision making, and very good in positioning like I said.’

Queens Park Rangers v Derby County - Sky Bet Championship
Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has plundered his former club for a loan deal (Picture: Getty Images)

Manchester United teenager Teden Mengi has agreed a loan deal with Derby County, with Wayne Rooney snapping up the defender for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old is very highly rated at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in August last year, coming on against LASK in the Europa League.

However, he is yet to make his Premier League debut and appearances even in the FA Cup and Legaue Cup have not come about, so he is moving on loan to gain first team experience.

Red Devils legend Rooney is in charge at Derby and has used his contacts at his former club to sign the England Under-18s man on a six-month loan, reports the Daily Mail.

The Rams are dealing with a number of outgoings this month amid financial concerns and Mengi is being brought in to plug a gap in the squad.

Morgan Whittaker, George Evans and Kaide Gordon are all set to depart and Rooney needs numbers to make up for those losses.

Rooney is picking up momentum in his first job in management, with Derby winning their last three Championship games and moving away from the relegation zone.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke in September of Mengi making a move into the first team more regularly, but it hasn’t happened as yet.

‘We always had that in the back of our minds that our academy will provide players and Teden has definitely impressed me. It’s different trusting defenders on the big stage, of course it is,’ Solskjaer told BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘You’ve got to make sure he’s ready for it, you see examples of Ajax, who play in a different league, but Matthijs de Ligt… they made him captain when he was 18. You can see something special in them. Teden’s got something special in him. It’s about picking the right moment to give him a chance.’

Holding has been a mainstay for the Gunners this season

Sol Campbell has heaped praise on Rob Holding for turning his career around at Arsenal.

The 25-year-old looked set to join Newcastle on loan at the beginning of the season after the arrivals of Pablo Mari and Gabriel back in the summer, but Mikel Arteta changed his mind and convinced Holding to stay at the club.

Since then, the English centre-back has gone on to become a key cog in the heart of Arsenal’s backline this season, making 18 Premier League appearances so far.

The defender was once again dominant in the draw with United

Holding had to recover from rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in December 2018, which ruled him out of action for nine months, and missed several games earlier this season with a hamstring issue.

Despite those setbacks, he has been one of the Gunners’ most consistent performers in defence and further proved his worth with another solid display in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United at the Emirates.

Legendary Arsenal centre-back Campbell has been impressed by the defender and the manner in which he has turned his fortunes around at the north London club.

When asked who has been the most impressive at the back for Arteta’s side, Campbell told Stadium Astro: ‘I think Rob Holding, he’s been fantastic.

‘He’s had a couple of injuries this season, in and out. But he’s come in solid and held his own.

‘Today, he got some really good defensive headers out of the danger zone, getting those little touches.

‘He has really come on and I’m really happy for him, because he was touch and go to leave Arsenal and he’s had a few injuries and now come in strong.

‘He’s been definitely one of the pluses since he’s got back into the side.’

Holding has helped the Gunners climb up to 10th in the table with a run of five wins from their last seven league games.

Arsenal are back in action again on Tuesday night when they take on Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves at Molineux.

Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Premier League
Jurgen Klopp is on the hunt for a new centre-back (Picture: Getty Images)

Liverpool have made an enquiry over the possibility of signing West Ham defender Issa Diop, as they look to ease their injury crisis at centre-back.

The Reds are still dealing with the long-term absences of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, while they are now missing Joel Matip and Fabinho through less serious injuries.

Such are their problems that against the Hammers on Sunday Jurgen Klopp fielded Jordan Henderson and Nat Phillips in the heart of defence.

The Premier League champions have been linked with a handful of centre-backs, including Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi, but Diop is also an option for the side from Anfield.

The Athletic report that Liverpool have made contract over the availability of Diop before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

West Ham are reportedly open to selling him, with the 24-year-old out of contention under David Moyes, but would want over £20m for him.

Given that West Ham and Liverpool are within a position of each other in the Premier League, a loan deal would be much less appealing for the Hammers.

Issa Diop

The Reds may choose to make the investment in Diop, but may be put off by the fact he has slipped so far down the pecking order at West Ham.

Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson have been playing at centre-back, while Fabian Balbuena has also played more often than Diop.

Diop arrived from Toulose in June 2018 for £22m and enjoyed two excellent seasons in the West Ham first team, seeing him linked with a £50m move to Manchester United.

Things have tailed off badly for him since then and a chance to move to the Premier League champions would likely be very appealing for the Frenchman.
