Arsenal’s former head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, gave Jurgen Klopp a glowing reference about Liverpool’s deadline day signing Ozan Kabak.

The Premier League champions secured two new arrivals on the final day of the transfer window as Ben Davies joined in a £2 million deal from Preston North End, while Kabak was signed from Schalke.

The 20-year-old has joined on loan for the remainder of the season, but Liverpool also have the option to purchase the centre-back for £18 million this summer.

Mislintat, who spent 14 months at Arsenal, is now Stuttgart’s sporting director and he oversaw the sale of Kabak to Schalke in 2019.

And the former Arsenal recruitment chief has revealed that he spoke with Klopp about Liverpool’s push to sign Kabak from Schalke.

‘I told Jurgen that he’s a top lad,’ Mislintat told The Athletic.

‘Top mentality, top character, top aggression. He’s a [Dejan] Lovren-type player. Very good in the air, both defensively and in the opposition box.

‘He played his best stuff for us [at Stuttgart]. He hasn’t been able to show how good he is at Schalke.

‘He still needs to learn but he has all the skills for Klopp to make a success of him.’

Meanwhile, Schalke’s former technical director, Michael Reschke, has also praised Liverpool’s decision to sign Kabak.

‘There was no way Schalke could stop him from going to Liverpool now,’ Reschke told The Athletic.

‘If they had refused him a big transfer for a second time, they would have killed him as a player. They knew they had to let him go now.

‘David Wagner [Schalke’s former manager] would have given him a glowing report. He’s not super fast, but he’s very strong and resilient, switched on. He can play football, he wants to win every ball and he’s great in the air.

‘I’d be surprised if he didn’t score a couple of goals from set pieces. He will benefit from a bit of guidance by more experienced players and from Klopp, who tends to improve every player.

‘We shouldn’t forget that he’s still young but getting him in on an initial loan is a superb deal for Liverpool. He will try absolutely everything to make it a permanent deal. I’m pretty sure he’ll make it. He’s got the quality to become an international top-class centre-back.’

LeBron James was involved in a contentious courtside row with fans during the LA Lakers win over Atlanta Hawks last night.

Juliana Carlos, who later posted on social media, and her husband, Chris Carlos, were involved in a frank exchange during the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 107-99 victory.

Having contravened Covid-19 protocol by lowering her face mask, Carlos and her husband were ejected from the game, but she later gave her full and frank account of the incident on her Instagram page.

‘So, I’m minding my own business and Chris has been a Hawks fan forever. He’s been watching the games for 10 years,’ she said on video. ‘Whatever, he has this issue with LeBron.

‘I don’t have an issue with LeBron. I don’t give a f*** about LeBron. Anyway, I’m minding my own business, drinking my [beverage], having fun.

‘All of the sudden, LeBron says something to my husband and I see this and I stand up and I go, ‘Don’t f***ing talk to my husband!’ And he looks at me and he goes, ‘Sit the f*** down, bitch.’ And I go, ‘Don’t f***ing call me a bitch. You sit the f*** down. Get the f*** out of here. Don’t f***ing talk to my husband like that.”

James was largely unfazed by the incident but took to social media afterwards, mokcing Carlos and branding her ‘Courtsdie Karen’.

Asked about the row in his post-match press conference, James said: ‘At the end of the day, I’m happy fans are back in the building.

‘I miss that interaction. I need that interaction, we as players need that interaction. I don’t feel like it was warranted to be kicked out.’

‘They might have had a couple drinks, maybe. And they could have probably kept it going during the game, and the game wouldn’t have been about the game no more, so I think the referees did what they had to do.’

Amad Diallo is yet to make his debut for Manchester United (Photo by Matthew Peters/Manchester United via Getty Images)

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering calling Amad Diallo up to the first team squad for Saturday’s clash against Everton.

The winger joined the Red Devils in January after United agreed a £37million fee with Serie A side Atalanta last summer.

Diallo scored twice for the U23s in a win against Liverpool on Saturday and Solskjaer says the Ivorian will be given time to adjust to life in England before he’s thrown in at the deep end.

However, United have picked up just one point from the last six available in the Premier League and Marcus Rashford cut a frustrated figure down a toothless right flank in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

Diallo’s preferred position is cutting in from the right onto his favoured left foot and Solskjaer says he will make a decision on whether the teenager is included in the squad to face Everton later this week.

‘We will make a decision on Amad in the week [on] what he does at the weekend – if he’s in our squad,’ said Solskjaer.

‘It depends on many factors, if we have injuries or Covid. You never know, but he might be playing on Friday [for the U23s] but yeah. I will make a decision on Thursday.’

United face Southampton at Old Trafford tonight before hosting the Toffees on the weekend.

Solskjaer is expected to make a number of changes from the side that failed to score past Arsenal, with Mason Greenwood, Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly in line to come into the starting XI.

United’s failure to win either of their last two games has left them trailing leaders Manchester City by three points having played a game more.

Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan from Liverpool on transfer deadline day

Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan from Liverpool during the closing stages of the transfer window, but the Japan international will be returning to Anfield in the summer.

Minamino joined the Premier League champions from RB Salzburg 12 months ago, but has made a minimal impact scoring just four goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

The intense competition for places in Liverpool’s forward line has restricted Minamino’s opportunities, but Jurgen Klopp, according to The Athletic, still sees a future for the versatile forward at Liverpool and turned down Southampton’s request to add an option to buy clause in the deal.

Overall, Southampton will pay Liverpool £500,000 to keep the player for the remainder of the campaign and Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, whose side has struggled to score goals recently, is confident his new addition is capable of making an instant impact.

‘I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season,’ said the Austrian, whose side takes on Manchester United this evening.

‘He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us.

‘I see us creating a lot of chances and it is only a question of time before we score again so it doesn’t worry me at the moment.’

Elsewhere on a frantic deadline day for Liverpool, the champions added two new central defenders to their squad following confirmation that Joel Matip would miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

Ozan Kabak has joined on loan from Schalke and the deal can be made permanent for £18m in the summer should the 20-year-old impress, while fellow youngster Ben Davies was signed from Preston in a £2m deal.

Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles sealed loan moves away from the Emirates, while Shkodran Mustafi completed a permanent transfer to Schalke on a busy deadline day for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s rebuilding project at the north London club stepped up a gear as the Gunners rounded off an active January transfer window with multiple last-minute departures.

Willock joined Newcastle on loan until the end of the season, while Maitland-Niles moved to West Brom on a six-month loan spell.

The two Gunners academy graduates found playing time hard to come by this season and will be likely to feature more regularly at their new clubs.

Meanwhile, Mustafi’s contract at the north London club was terminated, allowing him to move to Schalke on a six-month deal to replace Ozan Kabak, who joined Liverpool on deadline day.

The Germany international made the switch to Arsenal from Valencia for £35million back in 2016 but fell down the pecking order of centre-backs at the Emirates this season.

Arsenal technical director Edu and boss Mikel Arteta both wished the 28-year-old well upon his exit from the club.

Edu said: ‘We thank Musti for his contribution at Arsenal which has spanned four-and-a-half years, more than 150 appearances and a prominent role in two FA Cup wins. Everyone associated with the club wishes Musti and his family the very best wishes for the next chapter in his career.’

Arteta added: ‘Musti has been a key player for us for a long period of time. He played a very important part in my first season as manager and I’d like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon. Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke.’

Earlier in the January window, the Gunners also let William Saliba and Sead Kolasinac go out on loan, while the contracts of Mesut Ozil and Sokratis were terminated.

In terms of incomings at the Emirates, Arsenal brought in midfielder Martin Odegaard and goalkeeper Mat Ryan on six-month loan deals.

Matip won't feature again this term

Liverpool defender Joel Matip will miss the remainder of the season after suffering ankle ligament damage, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The 29-year-old, who has struggled with fitness issues throughout his Anfield career, was taken off at half-time of last week’s 3-1 win over Tottenham following a challenge with Heung-min Son.

The Reds have suffered a near unprecedented injury crisis in defence this season, losing both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to serious knee injuries, and they will now be without Matip for the rest of the campaign.

Liverpool brought in Davies and Kabak on deadline day

‘Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season,’ Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

‘But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.’

Matip’s prognosis may explain Liverpool’s last-ditch efforts to sign Ben Davies from Preston and Ozan Kabak from Schalke on deadline day.

Turkish international Kabak has joined on a six-month loan move, including an £18million option to buy at the end of the season, and Klopp has admitted he has a ‘big, big talent’ on his hands.

‘He came very young to Germany and everybody was clear he was a massive talent,’ Klopp said.

‘He is only 20 now. He plays in his second club [in Germany]; he is at Schalke and unfortunately they are in a bad position in the moment. For him, I think it’s a really good moment to make the move because, like each player in the world, you need a stable team around you and that’s what we can deliver.

‘We deliver a stable team and you can play your position, you don’t have to be 20 with pretty much everything on the pitch and not allowed to make mistakes anymore.

‘He’s really a big, big talent and we are really looking forward to working with him.’

Leipzig's French defender Dayot Upamecano looks on ahead of the German first division Bundesliga football match RB Leipzig v Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Leipzig, eastern Germany on January 30, 2021.

Chelsea and Liverpool are Bayern Munich’s biggest competitors in the race to sign Red Bull Leipzig centre-half Dayot Upamecano.

That’s according to Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who also conceded that his side would be losing long-term club servant David Alaba this summer.

Upamecano is viewed as one of the finest centre-backs in European football and has a bargain release clause for a player of his quality.

He will be available for just £38million in the summer but the deal is set to be struck in the coming weeks.

Bayern are thought to be leading the charge to sign the French centre-half but Rummenigge insists a deal is not done, yet and confirmed interest from Liverpool and Chelsea.

‘Besides Bayern Munich there are at least two very attractive competitors,’ said Rummenigge.

Rummenigge confirmed Liverpool and Chelsea’s interest (Picture: Getty Images)

‘The fact is that the player is interesting and the fact is that we will lose David Alaba on the position.

‘Whether there will be any further departures on the position, I can’t give a serious answer yet. You have to let things grow in peace. We have a good relationship with Mr. Struth (Upamecano’s agent, Volker Struth).

‘The player will know what he wants at some point. We have to RB Leipzig have a good relationship. I had a conversation with Oliver Mintzlaff.

‘When things get concrete, we’ll talk again. The transfer fee has been fixed. You have to wait for the time. The two clubs have a good relationship with each other.

‘He almost landed at FC Bayern once. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite dare to do that at the time and then developed well at Salzburg and Leipzig.

‘The fact alone that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in him shows that he has very good qualities.’

His agent, Struth, had previously confirmed two English sides were in the hunt to sign him but suggested Bayern were the side in command.

Struth told Sport1: ‘The release clause was agreed because the player decided to want to take the next step at some point. It is very likely in the summer.

‘Nothing final has been decided yet. The tendency for him to leave the club in the summer is high.

Sporting stadiums around Germany remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors.

‘The release clause is £38m. That is an insane sum in coronavirus times.

‘In summer 2019 it was something else. The proportions of the transfer fees have changed.  I believe that some clubs have to say goodbye to the market values when they sell players.

‘[Apart from the Bundesliga] only the English league is in consideration. The Spanish clubs that were eligible are currently financially unable to do so.

‘It’s no secret that there are two interested parties from the Premier League. A decision will be made and announced in the next few weeks.’

Paul Merson is 'shocked' by Liverpool's move for Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak

Paul Merson admits he’s ‘shocked’ by Liverpool’s deadline day push to sign Ozan Kabak and has joked that the Schalke defender’s agent should receive a knighthood.

The Premier league champions are already closing in on a move for Preston North End centre-back Ben Davies, with the 25-year-old expected to finalise his move to Anfield on Monday.

But Liverpool are also hopeful of completing a deal to sign Kabak from Schalke before the deadline at 11pm.

The 20-year-old has been targeted by Liverpool for over a year and Jurgen Klopp‘s side are closing in on a loan deal with the option to buy at the end of the season.

And Merson believes Kabak is very fortunate to be benefitting from Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis.

‘I think Fabinho’s a very good centre-half and I think Henderson is becoming one as well,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

Preston North End's Ben Davies is set to join Liverpool

‘I think it’s just more bodies. You’ve got to remember, people are going, ‘go out and buy him’. These players if you’re talking top draw are going to be £60m, £70m, £80m players. You buy them you’re taking £100,000-£200,000 a week, they won’t play in six months. When [Virgil] Van Dijk is fit, he plays, and [Joe] Gomez is a very good player as well, one for the future if not now. We can all spend the club’s money but at the end of the day it’s a business.

‘For me I think they’ve brought these in, they are not expensive, they play the position. I mean, the lad at Schalke, honestly he cannot believe his luck. If you’re his agent you’d look to get knighted. He’s going to the champions, they’ve [Schalke] won one game all season, they’re struggling at the bottom of the league.

‘I just don’t know [why they are buying him]. I honestly don’t know. That shocked me, that really shocked me.

‘The lad at Preston [Ben Davies] is a decent player, he’s a young player, but it’s a massive jump, you’re playing against the creme de la creme in the Premier League.

‘I just think they are bodies. I think it comes think and fast these games, sooner or later if Henderson gets injured and one of the young lads gets injured, all of a sudden you’ve got nobody. Even if it’s inexperience.

‘But the lad at Schalke, honestly, his agent needs to be knighted.

‘He’s not breaking the bank, we’re talking £2m or so, his wages are not going to be massive, he’s not in a position where he comes in and wants £100,000 a week. They’ll be reasonable.

‘He’ll be a stop-gap. If he’s one for the future and if he blossoms, not being horrible but anyone can play next to Van Dijk, he’s a Rolls Royce, if you’re playing next to him you don’t have to be the most experienced player in the world.

‘This lad might turn out to be a great signing in time to come. Playing at Schalke he hasn’t got a Van Dijk sitting next to him.’

Jonny Clayton
(Picture: Chris Dean/PDC)

Jonny Clayton may be the Masters champion and a confirmed competitor in this year’s Premier League, but he is not convinced about giving up the day job just yet.

The Welshman caused a huge upset to win the Masters on Sunday night, beating Mervyn King in the final after downing Jose de Sousa, Michael van Gerwen, James Wade and Peter Wright along the way.

The 46-year-old picked up his first televised singles title in the PDC, the £60,000 top prize, and the final spot in the Premier League in what turned out to be the finest day of Clayton’s career to date.

The Ferret has reached the upper echelons of darts despite still working full-time as a plasterer for a plasterer for Carmarthenshire council and he is still not certain that it is time to give up the day job.

With a major title under his belt and the touring commitments of the Premier League to come, it might be time to go full-time on the oche, but that is not guaranteed.

‘Can you stop asking me these questions!’ Clayton told Online Darts. ‘I don’t know, let’s see what happens, I’ll have a big chat at home, let’s see what comes of it.

‘I’m off [work] tomorrow. I’m going to have to think long and hard about it.

‘I’m home schooling tomorrow with the kids. I’ve got a lot of decisions to make and I’m not going to rush any of them.’

Clayton has always been concerned about taking the plunge into full-time darts, knowing the financial risks of that move going badly, although clearly where there is risk there is potential for huge reward on the oche.

‘I’ve got to where I am by working and I’m afraid to pack it up just to play darts because it might go the wrong way. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,’ Clayton told Metro.co.uk last year.

‘I think it gives me something to concentrate on. I’m sports mad, I love my golf, fishing, watching the rugby. If I finish work, would I put 100% into darts or would I be on the golf course on a sunny day? I don’t know. I’ve never tried not working so I’m just going to leave it as it is for the moment.

Clayton downed Van Gerwen en route to the Masters title (Picture: LAWRENCE LUSTIG)

‘I’ve been thinking about it for about two years, I keep telling the wife that I’m thinking about finishing but as the time gets nearer I’ve not got the guts to do it.

‘I work for Carmarthenshire council, so if I gave up my job at the council I would not get that back. I could go back onto site, but I’d lose my pension and everything that’s tied in with the council.

‘With darts, the money is totally different, darts will always be at the top when it comes to money but it’s just letting go. I’ve got two young kids and that’s just me, I’m probably doing the wrong thing by still working, but it’s just in my mind.’
