Celtic v Ferencvaros - UEFA Champions League: Second Qualifying Round
Celtic are enduring a terrible season by their standards (Picture: Getty Images)

Chris Sutton feels the next Celtic manager is in for an extremely difficult task unless numerous signings are made over the summer.

Neil Lennon resigned as Bhoys boss earlier this month with the title race all but over in Scotland.

Celtic currently sit 15 points behind Rangers and hopes of catching their bitter rivals are at an end.

John Kennedy is currently in charge of the side and is in contention to become the permanent manager, although former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is the current favourite with the bookmakers to be in charge next season.

Whoever it is who takes the reins, Sutton has serious sympathy for them given how this season has gone at Celtic Park.

‘Celtic have been sleeping this season,’ Sutton told BT Sport. ‘There’s been a lack of leadership all throughout the club and its a massive problem and they are not out of the woods just because Neil has stepped down.

‘Many Celtic fans think Neil was selfish by carrying on. Neil thought he could turn it round. On the face of it, I thought Neil should’ve stepped down after the defeat against Ross County in the League Cup back in November.

‘But now Celtic have to look forward and think about next season. The truth of the matter is that a new manager coming into Celtic, if he’s appointed in June, if he has to work with this current squad then God help him.’

Sutton has suggested a couple of managers currently in charge in the Championship as good candidates for the role in Glasgow, although they might not be the ones you would expect.

‘It’s a really, really difficult one. Maybe Celtic have something up their sleeve and will pull somebody in from the continent with a big reputation,’ he said.

‘I think somebody like Michael O’Neill has done a pretty decent job throughout his management career. Maybe have a shot for somebody like him.

‘I’ll tell you an interesting one down south. Mick McCarthy’s gone into Cardiff City and turned them around. He may not be everybody’s cup of team but you sort of know he will organise his team and get them playing a certain way.’

Leicester City v Arsenal - Premier League
Emile Smith Rowe sustained a groin injury (Photo by Tim Keeton – Pool/Getty Images)

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he’s hopeful that the injury Emile Smith Rowe sustained in a 3-1 win against Leicester is not ‘too bad’.

The midfielder was selected to start at the King Power Stadium but he was removed shortly before half-time and replaced by Martin Odegaard.

The youngster was one of five players to start against the Foxes that also started against Benfica on Thursday and the quick turnaround may have contributed to the apparent groin problem that he sustained.

Emile Smith Rowe has been in fine form for the Gunners but Arteta admits the midfielder suffered a ‘muscle’ injury and he was forced to take action.

‘It was a muscle injury,’ admitted Arteta.

‘He wast feeling comfortable to carry on, we decided to take him off but hopefully it’s not too bad.’

Arsenal recorded a morale-boosting win in the Midlands, despite falling behind to an early goal from Youri Tielemans.

However, the Gunners settled nicely and drew level through David Luiz before taking the lead on the stroke of half-time when Alexandre Lacazette converted from the penalty spot.

Leicester lost Jonny Evans and Harvey Barnes to injury after the break and Nicolas Pepe made the Foxes pay by adding a third.

Alastair Cook says India captain Virat Kohli's pitch claim was 'strange'

Alastair Cook ‘does not blame’ India for preparing a spin-friendly pitch for the third Test against England but says it was ‘strange’ for Virat Kohli to describe the Ahmedabad surface as ‘very good’ for batting.

India clinched a ten-wicket victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium last week in an extraordinary Test match which lasted less than two days.

It was the shortest Test in terms of balls bowled since World War Two, with spinners accounting for 28 of the 30 wickets to fall.

England were bowled out for 112 and 81, while India also suffered a remarkable collapse in their first innings, losing seven wickets for 31 runs to be bowled out for 145.

Part-time spinner Joe Root claimed incredible figures of 5-8 from 6.2 overs on a pitch that has been widely criticised, but Kohli claimed poor batting was the issue rather than the surface.

Speaking at his post-match interview, Kohli said: ‘The quality of batting wasn’t at all up to standard by both teams. I think batsmen need to trust their defence much more than they’re presenting at the moment.

‘[It was] a very good pitch to bat on – especially in the first innings – and it felt like the ball was coming on nicely with the odd-ball turning.’

Former England captain Cook disagreed with Kohli, however, although he refused to criticise India for preparing a pitch that would benefit them more than England.

‘I understand why fans watching on TV felt short-changed by the surface prepared for the third Test but actually I don’t blame India, although Virat Kohli’s remark that it was “very good to bat on” was strange,’ he told The Times.

‘If anything, the pitch was a compliment to England for how they had outplayed the hosts in the first Test. On a good surface, India saw that their opponents were more than their equal and decided to tilt the odds in their favour.

‘There was also the little matter of their qualification for the World Test Championship final in England this summer, which is dependent on them winning the series. Nice to see they take the championship seriously.’

Spinners Axar Patel and Ravinchandran Aswhin took 18 of India’s 20 wickets in the match and Cook admits he would have ‘struggled’ against Ashwin, who surpassed 400 Test scalps during the Test.

Cook, who averaged more than 50 in Asia, added: ‘On a normal pitch I would have waited for the ball I could clip to leg, the ball that could be swept and anything that could be driven safely or cut into the off side.

‘What we saw in Ahmedabad was not a normal pitch, however. Only three hours into the first day the ball was either skidding on, bouncing more than usual or turning to the extent that it was missing the stumps, the edge of the bat, the keeper’s gloves and being taken at first slip.

‘It got even more surreal when the part-time spinner Joe Root picked up a five-for in half an hour on the second morning.

Joe Root's side need to win the fourth Test to draw the series

‘When you’ve got so much variation off the pitch from a bowler who puts the ball in the right areas consistently then you worry that you may be a sitting duck if you bat conservatively.

‘The sweep shot can be a release valve but that too, as was the case in Ahmedabad, brought its own risks against Ashwin and although Ben Stokes looked to be proactive, he too eventually paid the price.

‘I never had Ben Stokes’ natural aggression so I would have backed my defence to wear down Ashwin. Eventually, I would have reasoned, he will tire and bowl a bad ball or be taken off.

‘The problem last week was that the ball with my name on it would probably have got me before that point.’

By beating England in Ahmedabad, India took an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series, which concludes at the same venue next week.

Mason Mount
Mount has been a key figure under Tuchel (Picture: Getty)

Mason Mount has revealed his conversations with Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel after initially being dropped from the Chelsea coach by the German.

Mount has been one of Chelsea’s best performers this season, thriving under the new Blues boss having played an integral role in the side under previous boss Frank Lampard.

The England international was dropped from the starting XI for Tuchel’s first game in charge at Stamford Bridge however as the former PSG boss tweaked his system at home to Wolves.

‘It’s very difficult. You know what I’m like, I want to play every single game,’ Mount told the Daily Mail.

‘But, with the new manager coming in, I understood that he went for experience [against Wolves]. We had a chat and I understood what his view was and that really helped me moving on. I knew I just had to keep working hard and show him what I can do.

Mason Mount

‘Obviously now I have played or started mostly every game. He just said: “Keep working hard, I’ve seen you only for one session and I’m very happy so don’t let your head drop.”

‘And that’s something I wouldn’t do anyway. I’m always someone who wants to strive to prove someone wrong or show something that maybe they haven’t seen.’

Mount has completed the full 90 in four of Chelsea’s five league outings since then but Tuchel has shown his ruthless side elsewhere in the team with Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi among those to have been hauled off by the manager.

Abraham has been replaced at half-time in each of his two league starts under Tuchel with Hudson-Odoi subbed off after coming on from the bench at half-time against Southampton last week.

Hudson-Odoi was back in the starting XI three days later against Atletico Madrid however with Mount praising the manager’s transparency on the training pitch, insisting he is clear in what he wants from his players.

‘He’s very passionate,’ says Mount. ‘When he came in, we had a meeting, we had training and we had one day before a game and everyone knew their role with the team.

‘It was very clear what he wanted. The players understand what a new manager wants and what his goal of playing is, what he wants off the ball, what he wants on the ball, what kind of movement. He made it very easy to understand. We’ve been learning more and more.’

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Willian to get over his exit from Chelsea after questioning whether the Brazilian was in ‘mourning’ after his departure from Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old joined the Gunners on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer, having spent seven years in west London.

Willian was handed a three-year deal at the Emirates but he’s struggled to settle at the club and is yet to open his account with the Gunners.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder raised eyebrows earlier this week when he revealed he wanted to stay at Chelsea and left the club with a heavy heart.

‘It was difficult to make that decision because the rivalry between the two clubs is very big,’ he told UOL Esporte.

‘It was well thought out… talking to my wife and even the agent many times.

‘I didn’t leave the club with a fight, I left the doors open. Everyone knew the conditions, I really wanted to stay.

‘We ended up not finding an agreement, I ended up asking for three years, Chelsea wanted to give two, and everyone knows this story. That’s why I ended up leaving.

The Brazil international was handed a rare start in Arsenal’s trip to Leicester this afternoon and Keown believes Willian may be in ‘mourning’ after his forced departure from rivals Chelsea.

Keown has urged Willian to get over his departure from Chelsea (Picture: BT Sport)

‘It’s interesting to read in the week that he wanted to stay at Chelsea,’ Keown told BT Sport.

‘Is he a player almost in mourning because he’s missing Chelsea?

‘He’s now an Arsenal player and he has to give his best for the football club. They rewarded him with a three-year contract.

‘He hasn’t really performed, he hasn’t really been in the mood. He’s looked glum as a player.

‘He needs to play his way in now, now that’s he’s being given minutes on the pitch – lets see what he can do. He’s always been a player that I’ve admired when he was at Chelsea but I’m not seeing the same in an Arsenal shirt.’

Graeme Souness and former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard

Graeme Souness has slammed ‘weak’ Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta after he claimed ‘everything had improved’ after Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard was sacked as Blues boss last month, with former Borussia Dortmund and PSG manager Tuchel named as his replacement.

Chelsea have enjoyed a revival under Tuchel, winning six of their last eight matches and beating Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie last week.

Ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Atletico, Blues captain Azpilicueta said: ‘Six weeks ago we weren’t at our best. Now with Tuchel everything has improved.

‘The team has better feelings. Although the Premier has nothing to do with it, reaching the Champions League on a roll is good news.

‘The solidity has recovered, fewer opportunities are granted and that speaks of the work of the group, from the first attacker to the last defender. With the new coach we try to control the games with and without the ball.’

But Souness was ‘disappointed’ to see Azpilicueta stick the boot into Lampard and says his comments were a sign of a ‘weak individual’.

He told The Times: ‘I always thought Cesar Azpilicueta was a proper professional, so I was also disappointed see him trotting out criticism of Frank after he was sacked.

‘You see it every time a manager leaves a club and these are just weak individuals looking to excuse the poor performances they have produced.’

Souness also said the current Chelsea squad is not good enough to win the Premier League, despite their £250million spending spree last summer.

‘Chelsea’s squad is not good enough to win the league,’ he added.

‘Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic still border on being five-a-side players for me – the modern term is continuity players I believe. I’d want more from them if I was their manager.

‘Take Jorginho’s penalties out of the equation and he does not get goals. Nor does Kovacic. I’d want them to be more dynamic and play it forward more often.

‘They are technically gifted, neat and tidy and rarely give the ball away, but you want to see them being more penetrative with their passing.

‘Olivier Giroud is a really good impact substitute to throw on when Plan A is not working, but I don’t think he will ever be Plan A, especially at 34.

‘Who is Chelsea’s guarantee of goals? Their version of Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane or Mo Salah?’

Liverpool v Everton - Premier League
Liverpool are enduring a difficult time with injuries and results (Picture: Getty Images)

Former Liverpool star Michael Thomas has backed the Reds to overcome their current issues and specifically the ‘major blow’ of losing Jordan Henderson to serious injury.

Henderson has been forced into undergoing groin surgery and will be out for at least five weeks as a result, joining the long list of injuries at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip remain out for the foreseeable future, whilt the likes of Fabinho, Diogo Jota, James Milner and Naby Keita have all been struggling for fitness in recent weeks.

It has been an horrendous season for Jurgen Klopp in terms of injuries and, while many of their experienced players are sidelined, Thomas is backing those still standing to lead the team back to winning ways.

‘Jordan is a major blow for the team both on and off the pitch,’ Thomas told CaughtOffside.

‘With the amount of experience in the squad, however, I expect the players to step up.

‘They’ve got some crucial games coming up and we need a win this coming weekend.’

The Premier League champions have been in shocking form domestically, losing their last four games in the league including an especially demoralising defeat to Everton last time out in the Merseyside derby.

They return to action on Sunday evening at Sheffield United in desperate need of a victory as they sit sixth in the table going into the contest.

On the spirit in the squad amid a difficult time, Klopp said: ‘The atmosphere is right. It’s appropriate, how it should be. Not the best but it’s all fine.

‘We all agree on what we have to do. We’ve had good moments as well. Very challenging time for this squad but you have to show your real face. We work hard.’

Graeme Souness says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has work to do at Manchester United
Graeme Souness says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has work to do at Man Utd (Pictures: Sky Sports / Getty)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘biggest challenge’ at Manchester United is how to get the best out of inconsistent Red Devils forward Anthony Martial, according to Graeme Souness.

Martial became the most expensive teenager in history when Man United spent an initial £36million to sign him from Monaco in 2015.

Despite showing glimpses of his undoubted potential, there is a feeling that there is still more to come from Martial, who has scored 78 goals in 254 appearances at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer has admitted this season that Martial has not been at his best, with the Frenchman scoring four goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Souness says Martial’s form remains an issue for Solskjaer and has rated Man United’s chances of finishing in the top four this season.

He told The Times: ‘Manchester United were not great against Newcastle last weekend, but they end up getting the goals and the job done.

‘I said at the start of the season that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s biggest challenge was keeping a fire lit under Anthony Martial and nothing has happened since to change my opinion.

Solskjaer expects Martial to come through his 'difficult patch'

‘But Edinson Cavani has been a plus and they are getting the job done in most cases, so I reckon they will end up in the top four.

‘Right now, Chelsea also have momentum, so, along with Manchester City and Leicester City, that would be my top four right now, but you could ask me every fortnight from now until the end of the season and I’d change my opinion every fortnight.

‘That’s how mad this season is.’

Speaking last week, Solskjaer backed ‘hard-working’ Martial to come through his ‘difficult patch’ at Old Trafford.

‘Anthony knows what we want, and he is working really hard to do well for the team and that’s what is pleasing me the most when I see him every day in training,’ said Solskjaer.

‘He is not going to sit down and wait for things to happen, he knows he will have to make it happen himself and we encourage him, we coach him, and we know he has going this quality and class.

‘Everyone goes through difficult patches from time to time and I think we saw again tonight, he is working hard and that is the main thing.’

LONDON, ENGLAND - JANUARY 28: Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur looks on during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on January 28, 2021 in London, England. Tottenham talisman Harry Kane has been warned he risks wasting his career at the club if he fails to angle for a move to rivals Manchester City or Manchester United this summer.

The 27-year-old is on course to become the club’s record scorer, while he’s in contention to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record if he continues at his current rate.

Kane is yet to win major silverware with his boyhood club, though he has a chance in late April when Spurs taken on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Nevertheless, it will take a strong turnaround for Spurs to qualify for the Champions League and former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy believes this summer is Kane’s last chance to push through an exit from the club.

FBL-ENG-PR-TOTTENHAM-ARSENAL
Kane has struck 21 goals so far this term (Photo by GLYN KIRK/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

‘It’s a huge summer for Harry Kane. If he doesn’t leave Tottenham now, he never will. He’ll finish as the club’s record goalscorer and have a statue built outside the stadium if he stays but at the expense of winning the trophies his talent deserves,’ Murphy wrote in the Daily Mail.

‘I’m sure he’s thinking about it every day because time isn’t on his side. Right now, he is among the best three strikers in the world and would improve any team.

‘But he turns 28 this summer, with younger models Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe becoming increasingly attractive to the elite clubs every year.

‘Kane clearly loves Spurs and wanted to give Jose Mourinho every chance this season. But they are miles off challenging for a Premier League title or Champions League so now it’s decision time.

‘Does he want to be like Thierry Henry, who left Arsenal for Barcelona and won the Champions League?

‘Or Jamie Vardy, who stayed at Leicester when he was coveted by other clubs and could have won more silverware but will be remembered as the Foxes’ greatest player?

‘One thing looks clear. From this summer onwards, future offers will be harder to come by. So I do think he should twist rather than stick.’

While Kane is undoubtedly one of the finest forwards in the world, his age means suitors may be unwilling to meet Spurs’ £150m valuation of the England skipper.

With the coronavirus pandemic having a grave effect on club finances across the world, the money clubs do have to spend is arguably better spent

That’s led the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City to target Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, rather than Kane.

But Murphy believes Manchester United would be another option, even if Kane may have to wait a little longer for top honours.

‘Kane’s situation is complicated by having another world-class centre-forward in the marketplace in Haaland, while Mbappe, the hottest property of the lot, might want to sample life outside Paris Saint-Germain at some stage,’ continued Murphy.

‘Picking the right club would also be vital for Kane, who doesn’t have the luxury of helping to build a long-term project.

‘For example, Manchester United would be improved by signing the England captain and could afford his transfer fee and wages but, for Kane, is it worth leaving Spurs without that guarantee of immediate success?

‘United might still be a year or two away from winning the big trophies which makes me think Manchester City looks a better fit.

‘City are blowing everyone away at the moment but Pep Guardiola is too shrewd to want to go into next season relying on Gabriel Jesus or a ‘false nine’ now it’s clear Sergio Aguero is playing fewer games.’
