Stephen Hendry

Stephen Hendry feels his game is not good enough right now to come through qualifying for the World Snooker Championship, but believes it could well be by the time the event rolls around next month.

The 52-year-old played his first professional game for nearly nine years on Tuesday night as he made his long-awaited return from retirement.

The seven-time world champion was beaten 4-1 in the opening round of the Gibraltar Open by Matt Selt, but there was plenty to be encouraged by as Hendry looked good, making a break of 107 in the one frame he won.

Selt played superbly to come away with a comfortable-looking win, but the performance has only encouraged Hendry as he chases his goal of returning to the Crucible.

The World Championship qualifiers run from 7-14 April and the King of the Crucible says that gives him enough time to prepare for a return to the scene of his unmatched success.

‘I’m happy that when I had a chance I scored, that’s what snooker is all about these days, scoring heavily when you get in,’ Hendry told WST.

‘Things to work on, right at this point in time my game’s not ready to qualify for the Crucible. But in a month’s time…a month ago I never would have competed in this match but it’s steadily improving.

‘I’ve seen all the attention on social media and in the press about my comeback, it’s been built up quite heavily so there was atmosphere there, even though there was no people there. I’ve got to pay credit to my opponent, though, because Matt played brilliantly tonight.’

Hendry identified his long-potting and safety play as the two areas he needs to work on most, because his potting when in the balls appeared to be excellent.

His slightly loose safety game was heavily punished by the in-form Selt who pounced on every opportunity handed him, but that has only encouraged Hendry to tighten up more thoroughly

‘I was quite happy, I didn’t miss anything easy, I need to cut out unforced errors,’ said the Scot.

‘My safety has to be tighter and my long game has to be better.’

Despite achieving everything in the sport, Hendry was understandably nervous returning to the baize after such a long spell out, but was happy to do so.

‘I really felt the nerves when I put my suit on in the hotel room,’ he said. ‘That’s when it really hit me, which is a good sign because without nerves you can’t perform.

‘But it needs to be more nerves of excitement and expectation rather than nerves of not knowing what’s going to happen. I was generally quite happy.

‘I don’t think there was any surprises, the table played nicely, not as fast as I thought it would be actually, but it was beautiful to play on.

‘Obviously I’ve watched enough of these matches working for TV, so you kind of feel you know what to expect getting out there.’

Tommy Fury has called out Jake Paul

Tommy Fury has offered to fight Jake Paul after Tyson Fury hyped up a showdown between the two fighters.

Tommy Fury extended his record to five wins with a second-round KO against Scott Williams last Saturday.

And after Tommy Fury’s victory, Tyson Fury suggested on Twitter that his younger brother should now target the YouTube star.

Jake Paul made his boxing debut last year and secured wins over Ali Eson Gib and former NBA point guard Nate Robinson.

Speaking about Tyson Fury’s post on Twitter, Jake Paul said: ‘Then I wake up and see Tyson Fury, the heavyweight champ, tweets me and he was talking s*** about Canelo too, saying it was boring or like no one was watching and I was laughing along with it.

‘Then I get to the bottom of the tweet and I see that he calls me out to fight someone and the tweet’s about his brother, and I’m like, ‘I didn’t even know he had a brother’.

‘He’s calling me out to fight his brother and I’m like, ‘bro, what the f*** is going on here?!’. I didn’t know Tyson Fury had a bro.

‘I like Tyson Fury, I don’t want beef with Tyson Fury but damn, if Tyson Fury took a s*** it would be this little brother he’s literally like this little kid.

‘But my point is here, you’re Tyson Fury’s little brother, if you want to fight me, don’t let your big bro do s*** for you, log on to Instagram and Twitter and call me out for yourself, bro. What’s going on in this boxing world.’

And on Tuesday evening, Tommy Fury responded to Paul with an Instagram message of his own.

‘So, I see somebody is having a little bit of something to say,’ he said.

‘Mr Jake Paul, I don’t need anybody to do my dirty work, I’m calling you out myself right now.

‘You can fight me any time, any place, anywhere. All you’ve got to do is get in touch.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks on in Manchester United training
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says supporters must be ‘realistic’ (Picture: Getty)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned fans that it may not be business as usual for Manchester United in the summer transfer window as the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic could prevent them from strengthening as they wish in certain areas.

The Red Devils looked to have announced themselves as genuine title challengers once again in a promising start to the Premier League campaign, while bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City failed to hit their heights of previous seasons.

But City have since pummelled all opposition into submission on a remarkable 21-match winning streak stretching back to mid-December and now sit 15 points clear of second-placed United ahead of their meeting at the Etihad this weekend.

The yawning chasm between first and second in the table has only amplified calls for United to bolster their squad with new recruits at the end of the season and a whole host of high-profile players – such as Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Raphael Varane – continue to be heavily linked

However, Solskjaer issued a word of caution at his press conference on Tuesday and called for supporters to be ‘realistic’ with their expectations.

‘The pandemic is definitely affecting everyone in football,’ the United head coach told reporters in the build-up to his side’s trip to Crystal Palace.

‘Of course the lack of income, the finances has affected everyone. It might affect us all well.

‘We have to be realistic and responsible in the way we do our business both on and off the pitch.

‘There are improvements on the training ground, stadium – we have to look at the whole picture. Where can we spend the money? And how much is there? It’s just the real world now. It has changed.

‘I think there’s just going to be less and less transfers happening in the world of football with all these changes.’

Solskjaer feels the situation could inadvertently benefit United’s young talent as there will likely be fewer big-name new arrivals blocking their path to the first-team.

‘You can look at it in different ways. We have players in the academy that we now can maybe give opportunities for,’ he added.

‘All clubs in the world are going through the same situation so it’s no different for other clubs than for us.’

The Norwegian did, though, reassure fans that the club were ‘always’ exploring possible avenues to better their current crop of players.

‘We’re always looking to improve our squad,’ he said.

‘We’re always looking at better players, or course we are.’

Borussia Monchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann has been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer

Borussia Monchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann has suggested that Chelsea have made an approach over a potential transfer this summer.

The 28-year-old played under Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and reports in Germany have claimed that the Chelsea manager is keen to bring the winger to Stamford Bridge.

Hofmann has impressed for Borussia Monchengladbach this season with seven goals and 11 assists in 25 appearances.

And the Germany international has suggested that Chelsea have been keeping tabs on his progress.

When asked about Chelsea’s reported interest, Hofmann told Ruhr Nachrichten: ‘I think it’s clear that other clubs will notice you if you perform well.

‘Therefore, it is possible that one or the other have already asked.’

Hofmann also insists that he is only focused on seeing out the season with Borussia Monchengladbach, who are four points behind a Europa League play-off spot in the Bundesliga.

‘Basically, I feel good at Borussia, I’ve always stressed that,’ he said.

‘It may be that one or the other club have expressed their interest.

‘Nevertheless, for me, the absolute focus is on having a successful season with Borussia and dedicating myself fully to success. I put my personal situation below it.’

Manchester City players celebrate during their win over Wolves in the Premier League

Pep Guardiola brushed off Manchester City’s record-breaking exploits after the club’s 4-1 win over Wolves and urged his players to instead focus their attentions on this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with fierce rivals Manchester United.

Wolves captain Conor Coady gave City a scare as he cancelled out Leander Dendoncker’s 15th-minute own goal with a headed equaliser just past the hour-mark at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

But the runaway Premier League leaders shifted up a gear and broke the visitors’ resistance to secure their 21st straight victory in all competitions, with Gabriel Jesus scoring a late brace and man-of-the-match Riyad Mahrez also finding the net at the death.

The result meant City also equalled their club record of 28 games unbeaten, a quite outstanding achievement which was relayed to Guardiola by BT Sport’s Des Kelly shortly after the final whistle.

But asked for his reaction to City’s remarkable feat, Guardiola bluntly responded: ‘Man United.

Manchester United is the only thing I care about.

‘We’re going to think about the records and everything we’ve done in the league when it’s over – so Man United.’

On whether City’s response was typical from a team destined to become champions, the Catalan replied: ‘The champions are Liverpool so the crown belongs to them.

‘We are in the best position right now to take them out and we are going to try but they are the champions.

‘We want to win it and defend it next season. There is 33 points to play for.

‘Tomorrow our opponents will play, we have one or two days off and prepare for Manchester United at home.’

Guardiola, whose side went 15 points clear at the summit, insisted his team were fully deserving of the victory after a ‘fantastic’ all-round performance.

‘Well deserved, fantastic game,’ he added.

‘We suffered after we conceded the goal, the first shot on target they had, so it’s so difficult to play against them.

‘They concede so few and the speed they have up front and all opponents know it.

‘But we were fantastic, we played really well. Our control… after 1-1 we suffered for five minutes but we created a lot of chances at the end and it was well deserved.’

The Spaniard’s one minor criticism was that his players could have shown more patience and ‘calm’ in their build-up play but felt they were otherwise ‘brilliant’.

‘Sometimes we want to do the situations too quick. You need more process,’ Guardiola continued.

‘As much passes and more calm, more and more chances we have and when against this team, you open the game and there’s nothing you can do.

‘It happened for 5-10 minutes but the rest was brilliant.’

The Gunners academy graduates have been consistent performers for Arteta's side this season

Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe have been a ‘huge breath of fresh air’ for Arsenal, according to England manager Gareth Southgate.

The Gunners academy graduates have made the most of their opportunities at the north London club and are both currently thriving in Mikel Arteta’s side.

Saka, 19, made his breakthrough into the first team last season and has continued his rapid rise to the top this term with a string of consistent performances on the wing.

Southgate has plenty of attacking options at his disposal
Southgate has plenty of attacking options at his disposal (Picture: Getty Images)

Meanwhile, Smith Rowe, 20, was afforded his first real chance in the senior set-up in December and has registered four assists in 12 Premier League games since then.

In terms of their international status so far, Saka has earned four England caps while Smith Rowe has only featured for the Three Lions at youth level.

Southgate has some big decisions to make before he announces his squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers – which will be the last chance he has to see his team in action before this summer’s rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament.

The England boss is delighted to have seen plenty of homegrown talent brought through at Premier League clubs of late, and mentioned Saka and Smith Rowe as two shining examples of academy prospects who have seized their chances.

Emile Smith Rowe getting his opportunity at Arsenal,’ Southgate told talkSPORT.

‘We know those kids are there and we know the talent is there, but when the buying and spending power of the clubs is greater than anything around Europe, and the pressure is on to have immediate success, it is easier to go and buy the finished product from abroad.

‘There was always this blockage for young English players, now they’re getting their chance.

‘Those two boys at Arsenal, Saka and Smith Rowe, have been a huge breath of fresh air in their team and there are more across the country if they get their opportunity.’

On his selection dilemmas, Southgate added: ‘There is a lot of talent. It is a case of who is playing the best, who do we think has the pedigree, who has performed at a high level before, coupled with who is in form and who fits into the way we want to play.

‘The squad has to evolve all the time. If there is ever complacently that sets in then the young players have provided that competition and energy.

‘You need experienced players who have got to those latter stages of tournaments, who are used to winning and have maybe won trophies with their clubs. We’ve got to get the balance right.’

John Barnes believes Liverpool need to target more defensive signings
John Barnes believes Liverpool need to target more defensive signings (Picture : Getty)

John Barnes has advised Liverpool to rival Manchester United this summer and make an attempt to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

The France international has little over a year remaining on his current contract and appears destined to leave the Spanish giants after a trophy-laden decade at the Bernabeu.

Real have made attempts to tie the long-serving centre-half down to a new deal but are said to be prepared to entertain offers with a resolution unlikely to be forthcoming.

Varane is said to want an improved deal and even offers of the captaincy are unlikely to dissuade the 27-year-old from seeking a new challenge. United failed to sign a centre-half last summer and are on the lookout for a new partner for Harry Maguire.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has earmarked the likes of Jule Kounde from Sevilla and Tyrone Mings from Aston Villa, but Varane represents an ideal candidate given his experience and an easily affordable transfer fee.

Raphael Varane looks certain to leave Real Madrid this summer as he approaches the end of his contract

Barnes, however, believes Liverpool show plot a move of their own, rather than focus on reinvigorating a forward line that still relies heavily on the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Injuries to the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have severely undermined Liverpool’s bid to retain the Premier League title this season with January recruits Koban Ozak and Ben Davies doing little to remedy their defensive issues.

‘Varane would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,’ Barnes told BonusCodeBets. ‘He’s quick, he’s a good defender and great on the ball so he would suit the way that Liverpool play and for Liverpool to sign him would be a fantastic piece of business.

‘He would strengthen any team in the Premier League but if he is leaving Real Madrid then there will be a lot of teams interested and a lot of competition to sign him.

‘Mbappe and Haaland are the answer to Liverpool’s problems, but they would also be great for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and every top team in Europe.

‘Attacking players are not Liverpool’s immediate priority because they have Mane, Salah and Firmino, who are fantastic players and the club are among the top scorers in the league while playing brilliant attacking football.

‘However looking at the age of the top three, in the long term they need to be replaced, but for the immediate future, Mbappe and Haaland aren’t players that could come unless things change with one of the front three going.’

Stephen Hendry
Stephen Hendry makes his long-awaited return on Tuesday night (Picture: Getty Images)

John Higgins is fascinated by Stephen Hendry’s return to snooker, acknowledging that is going to be very tough for his fellow Scot but also recognising that the lengthy break from the game could have been a positive.

Hendry returns to professional snooker for the first time since the 2012 World Championship on Tuesday night at the Gibraltar Open as he makes a bid to return to the Crucible next month.

The seven-time world champion has been working hard with SightRight coach Steve Feeney to get his game back up to scratch and will put it to the test against Matt Selt in his first match for nearly nine years.

The world will be watching as the 52-year-old tries to rediscover some of his old form in Milton Keynes and Higgins will be one of those viewers.

The Wizard of Wishaw describes Hendry as his ‘hero growing up’ and is not sure how his compatriot will fare in his comeback, but would not miss it for the world.

‘It’s going to be so interesting. I’ll be tuning in, Tuesday night for him and Matt, I’m looking forward to doing it,’ said Higgins after his superb Players Championship win on Sunday.

‘He’s doing the SightRight thing and he’s obviously really excited about it, which is amazing. If he thinks he can do it, come back and compete. fair play to him.

‘It’s going to be difficult, I don’t think there’s any two ways about it, with the standard of player in the mix.

‘To be honest he wasn’t really competing to win events when he did retire anyway. Six or seven years he wasn’t getting to finals and semi-finals.

‘It might have done him the world of good, an eight or nine year break to come back completely refreshed. It’s going to be fascinating to see what happens, it really is.’

John Higgins
Higgins was in stunning form to win the Players Championship on Sunday (Picture: WST)

Hendry admits he doesn’t entirely know what to expect himself but is pleased to finally be taking to the table after accepting a wildcard to return to the Tour back in September.

‘I am, I’m curious to see what will happen. I’m prepared for any result really,’ Hendry told WST.

‘It’s obviously been a long time, this comeback, I’ve been getting a lot of stick from the players about how long its taken to play a match

‘If I’m going to enter the Worlds I need some kind of reference in the arena.

‘I’ve no expectations on what I’m going to do but I’ve just got to get out there and sample the match atmosphere, no fans but at least you’re on the match table.

‘I’m looking forward to it, but I’m prepared for any eventuality.’

World number one Judd Trump was somewhat sceptical about Hendry’s chances of returning with a bang, saying that the seven-time world champ will do well to just win a match.

‘It is a strange one,’ Trump said at the Welsh Open last month. ‘I don’t know whether he is coming back to take it seriously, or just as a bit of fun.

‘It is going to be tough for anyone after that amount of time off. It would surprise me if he won any games at all.

‘I think when Stephen retired the standard was already starting to go up and that caught him out.

‘I think he found it harder as Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams started to get the better of him. He found that tough to take, so I’d be surprised if he can get many results now the whole tour is of a very good standard.’

Hendry makes his return at 7pm on Tuesday 2 March against Matt Selt live on Eurosport.
