Steve Bruce was called a ‘coward’ by Matt Ritchie during a heated bust-up at Newcastle United’s training ground, according to reports.

Bruce publicly criticised Ritchie over his failure to pass on instructions to his teammates before Wolves’ goal in the 1-1 draw at St James’ Park on Saturday.

‘The instructions Matty didn’t get on to the team quick enough on how we were doing it,’ Bruce said after the game.

‘When you look at the goal, we should have stopped the cross and when the ‘keeper looks at it, could he have done better?’

According to MailOnline, Ritchie was furious with Bruce’s criticism and demanded an explanation from the Newcastle manager following the match.

But after being summoned to Bruce’s office on Tuesday, Ritchie refused to meet with the Newcastle boss and called him a ‘coward’.

The report alleges that Bruce shoulder barged Ritchie and said to the midfielder: ‘After all I’ve done for you.’

Ritchie’s alleged response to Bruce was: ‘You’ve done f*** all for me.’

The report claims that Bruce believes Newcastle’s players have been speaking about their unhappiness to the club’s managing director Lee Charnley.

It’s also alleged that several players in the Newcastle squad want assistant manager Graeme Jones to take over from Bruce until the end of the season.

Ritchie reportedly apologised to the players and Newcastle’s coaching staff at the training on Wednesday.

Newcastle are currently three points clear of safety and are due to play West Brom on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended his decision to leave Amad Diallo and Shola Shoretire on the bench during Manchester United’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.

United are now left 14 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City following their drab stalemate at Selhurst Park.

Solskjaer’s side were struggling to create clear-cut chances against Palace but the United manager opted to make only two substitutions in the second half as he brought on Scott McTominay for Fred and Dan James for Edinson Cavani.

When asked why he did not bring on either Shoretire or Diallo, Solskjaer said after the game: ‘We had Marcus out there, Mason out there, Bruno out there, Scotty came on to give us a goal thrust and he almost had a chance straight away. We put Dan on for some pace.

‘With those out there that’s most of our goals that we had.

‘Of course we had Shola or Amad, but which one of those five would you take off? That was my quandary in the last 10, 15 minutes. I felt Mason, Bruno and Marcus could get a goal.

Shola Shoretire was an unused sub at Selhurst Park

‘Scotty and Dan actually had a chance each when they game on.’

Solskjaer also admitted that United lacked quality and tempo against Palace.

When told that United looked like they lacked urgency at Selhurst Park, Solskjaer replied: ‘Lack of urgency… you can say urgency as a word, we just didn’t have the quality and the tempo of the passing, you could call it urgency.

‘We started slow, that’s for sure. It’s never nice to see the opposition take the initiative.

‘We got into the game and when we played with quality and tempo we did create chances, but we didn’t have enough of it, we didn’t build enough pressure on their defenders and keeper to make saves.’

Marcel Sabitzer reacts to rumours Tottenham want Julian Nagelsmann and addresses his future

Marcel Sabitzer has responded to suggestions he could move to Tottenham with RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann this summer as he nears the final year of his contract.

The north Londoners have been identified as the likeliest destination for the Leipzig skipper should he refuse a new contract with the Bundesliga side, who would be moved to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing.

But he might not be the only Leipzig star heading to Spurs, with Nagelsmann reportedly the top choice to replace Jose Mourinho if the Portuguese coach cannot arrest the side’s poor form.

Questioned about the speculation linking the duo with Spurs, Sabitzer was coy on both his own future and that of his manager, though he did leave the door open to leaving Leipzig.

Asked if he will be joining Tottenham with Nagelsmann this summer, Sabitzer told SportBild: ‘I do not know what Julian is up to!

‘I have to say: I have a contract until 2022, and not just until this summer.

‘My closest circle knows my thoughts. I don’t have any stress.

‘The question always arises if the two parties will come together. But my salary is not my main focus.

‘I don’t play football to build a money store after my career.’

He added: ‘Leipzig are already one of the great clubs. But RB does not have to be the only great club in my life. I am only 26 years old.’

Tottenham would be looking to pay a cut-price fee for Sabitzer giving that he is entering the final year of his contract with Leipzig, much as they did with Southampton and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer.

Nagelsmann, however, will be much more expensive – especially as Spurs will face a bill of as much as £30m to terminate Mourinho’s contract early, should they decide to do so.

Erling Haaland is not convinced by a move to Chelsea and does not view them among the clubs he wishes to join.

The race is on to sign the Norway international this summer, with all of Europe’s top clubs interested in landing the Borussia Dortmund striker.

It’s easy to see why, Haaland has banged in 29 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season and he’s among Europe’s most prolific marksmen.

Only 20, there is potential for him to become one of the world’s very best and he is expected to be available for around €110million (£95m).

Chelsea are among the sides keen to sign him but, according to Bild, a move to Stamford Bridge does not appeal.

Haaland doesn’t rate Chelsea among the very best sides in Europe and sees himself moving to only one of six clubs: Juvents, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

He is not interested in taking an intermediate step and wants to join one of Europe’s biggest superpowers, with Chelsea not fitting his criteria.

It will come as blow to Chelsea, with owner Roman Abramovich thought to be a big admirer of the striker, but Paul Merson had predicted the 20-year-old wouldn’t fancy a move to Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.

‘I think next season Thomas Tuchel will be saying to the board, to Roman Abramovich, I need a top-drawer centre-forward,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘You will not win the Premier League, or be anywhere close, if you don’t have players around the top-scorer mark. At the moment, I don’t see Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud being in that category.

‘The way they are now, if you’re Erling Haaland and Chelsea come in and say we’ll pay £110m or whatever it is, we’ll give you this much a week, he will be looking at the same time at the way Chelsea play, and that they’ve only scored eight goals in seven games.

‘You can only score goals if there’s chances and Chelsea haven’t made a lorry load of chances. Liverpool’s finishing against Sheffield United was poor, but they made a lorry load of chances.

Thomas Tuchel head coach of Chelsea reacts during the UEFA Champions League game between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, in Bucharest, Romania on February 23, 2021.

‘Chelsea need to be showing more than what they’re showing at the moment. Because if I’m a world-class centre-forward and Chelsea want me, I’m having a look and saying to my agent “they don’t really make a lot of chances, do they?”.

‘Even though they’re a good team, I’m not getting five or six chances in the game. I’m working on scraps.’

Martinelli hasn't featured in the Premier League since the end of January

Ian Wright has backed Mikel Arteta’s careful handling of Gabriel Martinelli’s playing time of late and wants Arsenal fans to be ‘more patient’ over the 19-year-old.

Martinelli, who was signed from FC Ituano in 2019, burst onto the scene last season with 10 goals in his first 26 games for the club but suffered an untimely knee injury in June which kept him out of action for six months.

The winger was slowly reintroduced towards the end of December and made an immediate impact with his energetic and dynamic performances.

But an ankle injury picked up in mid-January proved to be yet another setback and since then, Arteta has handled the Brazilian’s game time carefully,

Martinelli has been an unused substitute in Arsenal’s last five Premier League games and was also left on the bench when his side were chasing a goal against Benfica in the Europa League last week, which drew criticism from sections of the fanbase.

After his latest omission in last Saturday’s win over Leicester, Arteta admitted the forward needs to ‘keep working’ and ‘make it difficult’ for him to be left out.

And given the improved form of Willian and Nicolas Pepe in recent weeks, Gunners legend Wright believes his former side can afford to ease Martinelli back into action slowly.

‘People are very much like, ‘where’s Martinelli?’,’ Wright said on Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘But Martinelli has had a serious injury, he’s coming back and with Willian playing better, with Pepe playing better, with Auba nicking his goals now – he can introduce him slowly.

‘Please be more patient, Arsenal fans, because this is our future, Gabriel Martinelli is our future.

‘Yes, he’s fit but we don’t want to be blasting him in just in case he could break down.

‘We have players who are playing better now and we can ease him in.

‘His time will come because Mikel makes the right decisions.

‘You can see that with Willian at the moment and long may it continue for Willian.’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says William Saliba’s loan spell at Nice is ‘good news’ for the Gunners as the club will have a ‘much better perception’ of how to use the defender next season.

The Frenchman agreed to join the club in a £30m deal in 2019 but spent a further season with Saint-Etienne before moving to the Emirates last summer.

However, while Saliba was held up as the answer to the club’s issues at centre-back, Arteta did not share the view of supporters and failed to give the 20-year-old a single start in the first team.

After a frustrating period with the U23s, Saliba requested to leave on loan in January and he joined Ligue 1 side Nice until the end of the campaign.

Arsenal loaned fellow youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos to Stuggart in a bid to get him first team football and Arteta says the pair’s loan spells are ‘good news’ for the Gunners moving forward.

‘We are having meetings very often to assess what they are doing,’ said Arteta when asked if he’s keeping tabs on the progress of Mavropanos and Saliba.

‘Obviously we are getting all the information and watching their games because I want to keep a very close eye on what they are doing

‘We are in contact with the players and let’s see. It’s good news that they’re playing and good news that they have the possibility to have a lot of minutes, because that’s going to give us a much better perception of where they are and how we can use them.’

Arsenal are set to offer David Luiz a 12-month contract extension as Arteta values the veteran’s experience.

Arteta has reintegrated Pablo Mari into his starting XI in recent weeks, with the Spaniard partnering Rob Holding or Gabriel in the heart of his defence.

A decision over Saliba’s future will be made at the end of the season, with Nice keen to keep the Frenchman for another season.

Alexandre Lacazette

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will open contract negotiations with Alexandre Lacazette soon but remains unsure over the striker’s long-term future at the club.

Lacazette has been tipped to leave The Emirates this summer with the Gunners reportedly happy to let him leave for the right price.

Atletico Madrid and Roma were among the clubs interested in the 29-year-old last summer but were unable to fund the move.

The Frenchman’s current contract with Arsenal expires in the summer of 2022 with Arteta hopeful he will follow in the footsteps of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in committing his future to the club.

‘He’s [Lacazette] got a contract with us,’ Arteta told a press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Burnley.

Arteta says the club will sit down with Lacazette soon (Picture: Getty)

‘He played really well the other week. It’s exactly what we demand him to do. I’m really happy with him and the discussions about his contract will happen soon and we will see what happens.

‘I’m hoping that a player under contract will continue with us. Every case is different and we’re going to assess that and we’ll make a decision in relation to that.’

Lacazette joined Arsenal from Lyon in the summer of 2016, arriving as the club’s biggest ever signing for a £46.5million fee before that record was shattered by Aubameyang’s arrival just six months later.

The forward has 11 goals in 30 appearances for the Gunners this season, including nine in 17 Premier League starting appearances.

Mikel Arteta is expecting Arsenal to be busy in the summer transfer window and says their business will be ‘unprecedented for a club of this stature’.

Arteta suggested there will be a lot of incomings and outgoings as he seeks to take Arsenal to the ‘next level’.

It’s been a disappointing first season in charge for the former Manchester City assistant manager.

Arsenal are currently 10th in the Premier League and eight points off the top four and their only realistic hope of silverware is the Europa League.

Despite their poor season, Arteta’s position is not thought to be under threat and he is already planning for the next transfer window.

And he admitted there will be a lot of transactions they ‘have to make’ in order to get back to the required level.

‘We will see. We are planning what’s going to happen in the summer,’ said Arteta.

[It will depend on where we finish, how we finish. I think what we have to do in the summer is unprecedented for a club of this stature.

‘To do the amount of transactions that we have to make it tells you as well where we are.

‘I think it was very much needed and you want to improve, you want to do that. It’s where you have things in the house and you believe that you can improve on it.

‘Externally acquiring players to go to the next level. Everything is planned and let’s see what the market can bring and what the last few months can bring to the club.’
