After six months off the slopes, I’m back and putting my focus on next year’s Winter Olympics.

Because of the pandemic, it was pretty much impossible to do competitions, fly abroad or train in this country (due to lack of snow) from last March until pre-season began in October.

I tried to remain as positive as possible throughout the lockdowns and made the most of what was a challenging time, for everyone of course, not just pro athletes.

One of my sponsors, Red Bull, sent me gym equipment so I could continue my strength work from home, and I also hosted live daily stretching sessions on Instagram.

I kept a strong mindset throughout and made the most out of being at home for an extended period — something that doesn’t happen often for me.

Naturally, I missed being able to snowboard, especially after seeing my competitors from other nations able to train, but I remained motivated by doing garden gymnastics sessions and using a static snowboard to practise rail tricks as it was the closest I could get to the real thing.

I missed the southern-hemisphere season because of the restrictions on travel so was extremely happy I had such a great 2019-20 campaign — the most successful of my career so far, by becoming the first Briton to win the overall World Cup slopestyle title as well as five World Cup podiums.

In October, I was able to travel again and went to Italy and Austria for training, which was amazing after so long without being able to do so.

It was the best feeling being back in the mountains. I worked extremely hard and took advantage of every moment on the snow to work on my tricks, ready for Winter Olympic qualification, which started in January.

The first World Cup in Kreischberg went very well for me after almost a year out, as I placed eighth — a result which has given me good points going into the rest of the Olympic qualifiers. It felt great being back in a bib and I quickly got used to our new ‘normal’.

I’m excited for Beijing in 11 months’ time and am very confident it will go ahead, although I feel for the summer Olympians who have seen their Games pushed back by a year and must even now be wondering about Tokyo this summer.

What I really hope is that everyone, and that’s including young athletes who are up-and-coming and currently unable to do the sport they love, are staying positive during the current lockdown.

I know it’s not easy but it is so important to keep a strong mindset. I’m sure we will get back to normal at some point soon and I believe we can still inspire the next generation of snowboarders despite the lack of snow time recently.

Konate is being chased by a number of clubs

Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on RB Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate as Mikel Arteta plots a big rebuild of his squad in the summer transfer window.

There was a flurry of activity in January for the Gunners with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis all having their contracts terminated while William Saliba and Sead Kolasinac went out on loan.

According to the Evening Standard, the north London club are considering bringing in another centre-back and Konate is a player who has caught their eye.

Arsenal are said to be one of a number of clubs tracking the 21-year-old, who is regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s top prospects alongside fellow Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Arteta revealed on Wednesday that the club are planning an ‘unprecedented’ summer window due to the amount of transfer that are required to get his squad into shape.

The Gunners are currently down in 10th place and eight points off the top four after losing 11 of their 26 Premier League games this season, and the Spaniard admitted that their transfer plans are dependent on where they finish in the table.

‘We are planning what’s going to happen in the summer,’ said Arteta. ‘It will depend on where we finish, how we finish.

‘I think what we have to do in the summer is unprecedented for a club of this stature.

‘To do the amount of transactions that we have to make it tells you as well where we are.

‘I think it was very much needed and you want to improve, you want to do that.

‘It’s where you have things in the house and you believe that you can improve on it.

‘Externally acquiring players to go to the next level. Everything is planned and let’s see what the market can bring and what the last few months can bring to the club.’

Manchester City v Newcastle United - Premier League
Sergio Aguero (Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images)

Barcelona will aim to sign Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero on a free transfer this summer if  Joan Laporta is named the club’s new president.

The 58-year-old is favourite to win in the upcoming elections, with Laporta seeking a second stint at the helm at the Camp Nou having guided the club as president from 2003 through to 2010.

Laporta has already vowed to keep Lionel Messi at the club should he win the elections but the Catalan lawyer is seeking to build some momentum ahead of the voting by looking at the signing of Aguero.

The Argentine is out of contract at the end of the season at the Etihad, which suits cash-strapped Barcelona, according to the Times.

Aguero is close friends with Messi and while he remains one of the most feared strikers in world football, he could prove just as crucial in convincing the Argentina captain to stay at the Camp Nou.

Aguero, 32, has netted 256 goals in his ten years at City but there’s been little talk of extending the striker’s deal in the north-west.

City had expected Aguero to return to Argentina when he leaves the club but the prospect of at least a year at the Camp Nou may appeal to the striker, who has struggled with injury during the last 18 months at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola remains an admirer of Aguero but the club will wait to see if he can regain his fitness and form after just five starts this season before deciding whether to discuss a new deal.

Eddie Jones' England side have made a wretched start to the Six Nations
Eddie Jones’ England side have made a wretched start to the Six Nations (Picture: Getty)

Where are you, let’s be having you’ are the infamous words shouted by Delia Smith at half-time during one of Norwich’s relegation battles. Throw this rant forward 16 years and Delia could be asking the same question of England.

Eddie Jones’ men are individually and collectively so far from their best, and we are witnessing it on the most brutal of stages. Two pre-tournament potential Lions captains in Maro Itoje and Owen Farrell look to be playing with deep angst and frustration. Itoje, in particular, who has always walked a tightrope with officials, has been refereed off the pitch. A wonderful, dominating player seems to be forcing his game, desperately trying to make a difference, but in doing so becoming a one-man penalty machine.

But it is not just Itoje. England’s penalty count for the last three games is 41. International coaches target fewer than ten a game. And England have played Italy, where a maximum of six or seven should be a target. It all points to something deeper, and unsettling, within the side.

Discipline underpins all team sport but it does not just refer to the laws of the game. It is accountability to turn up and to do your job. In rugby union it is to run the right lineout drill, the right backs shape, to target the shoulder of a certain defender, to create space, to constantly communicate both sides of the ball. When discipline is lost, sides flounder.

They are being squeezed by both the referee and themselves. In desperation to change the game in their favour, they are spinning out of control.

Wales v England - Guinness Six Nations
Maro Itoje has been guilty of giving away needless penalties against the likes of Wales (Picture: Getty)

There is, of course, a French elephant in the room. But put referee Pascal Gauzere’s decision-making in the defeat to Wales aside for a second, if that’s possible. England had recovered to make it 24-24. After all that effort to drag themselves up to parity, they imploded, showing the lack of clarity of thought and the stress levels in this team.

This talent-laden side playing at their finest would have recovered, consolidated and then blown past the opposition. More confounding still is, at times, they were at their blunt-force best, as shown in the lead-up to Anthony Watson’s try. This glimpse of a high-tempo, collision-winning England that we have come to know must leave the coaches and players scratching their heads.

They will naturally point to Gauzere’s refereeing, and rightly so. He has subsequently admitted fault but this will not appease England nor does it change the result. The Louis Rees-Zammit knock-on for the second questionable try is tough but, slowed down under the TMO’s microscope, there is an argument to let it slide.

But his handling of matters around the first try was, to put it mildly, appalling. To allow Farrell time to talk to his team, while acknowledging Dan Biggar’s request to notify him when time restarts, felt almost complicit. Farrell’s outrage was fair but his remonstrations fell on deaf ears as the Welsh trotted back to the halfway line.

These decisions would unsettle most sides, and many would certainly not have recovered. Which makes England’s response as impressive as it is disappointing.

It leaves Jones with more questions than answers. How does he unwind his team from this tight, fraught unit, insistent on self-flagellation?

How do the players, facing so many appalling comments on social media, unravel themselves from the grip of outrage and frustration? In a Six Nations like no other, it will require an extraordinary response.

Aurélien Tchouameni

Chelsea are monitoring Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni ahead of a possible summer move, according to reports.

The 21-year-old midfielder has started all but one of Monaco’s 28 Ligue 1 matches this season, playing a key role at the base of Niko Kovac’s midfield.

According to ESPN, a number of big European clubs are following the Frenchman’s progress, with Chelsea among those said to be huge admirers.

Tchouameni has played a key role for Monaco this term with the club back in title contention, currently sat in fourth place seven points behind league leaders Lille.

Chelsea have been linked with a number of options in defensive midfield with Declan Rice targeted for a return to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Chelsea’s interest in Rice appears to be fading (Picture: Getty)

Former Blues boss Frank Lampard, replaced by Thomas Tuchel at the end of January, was understood to be the main driver of that interest however with the club less likely to purse the England international heading into the summer, according to The Guardian.

Chelsea are also thought to be keen on bringing in a central defender and a striker this summer with Erling Haaland strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Norway international however may overlook the Blues when it comes to deciding his next club.

According to Bild, Haaland doesn’t rate Chelsea among the very best sides in Europe and sees himself moving to only one of six clubs: Juventus, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Andy Murray cut a frustrated figure after his straight sets defeat to world No. 8 Andrey Rublev in Rotterdam on Wednesday night but insists he will keep learning from losses to top-level opposition.

Murray, the two-time Wimbledon champion from Dunblane, smashed his racquet as two double faults contributed to him dropping serve at the end of a tight first set and from there the Russian assumed control.

There were encouraging signs for Murray – going toe-to-toe with one of the world’s best players in what was just his third ATP Tour-level match of the season – but he was left disappointed that his best tennis deserted him in the biggest moments.

‘I did some things quite well in the first set, but when it mattered I didn’t play well,’ said Murray.

‘I lost my serve from 30-love up: I hit two double faults, and a bad forehand. To me that’s just not good enough. I felt in that moment at the end of the first set that I blew it a bit.

‘I’m not used to making those errors in those moments and I’m finding that quite frustrating, and mentally finding myself looking back on those moments a little bit too much.’

Murray, 33, did reach the final of a Challenger event in northern Italy to kick-start his season, but has won only one of his last six tour-level contests.

Still, the world No. 123 is confident he will keep improving the more he exposes himself to that environment.

‘I want to be playing at this level because I learn a lot from a match like tonight,’ added Murray.

‘The issues and the mistakes that you make get amplified more at this level… It is getting that balance right between getting enough matches and then also playing at a level where I am able to learn and pick things up as quickly as possible.

‘I do feel tonight there were some good, positive signs there. Just when it mattered, I wasn’t good enough. I will need to improve.’

Next week, fellow tour veteran Roger Federer will return to action.

Federer last played competitive tennis in a straight sets semi-final defeat to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open but after two surgeries on his right knee, he will be back on court in Doha next week.

‘I just want to get out and compete and just enjoy doing what I am doing. I imagine Roger would be the same,’ said Murray.

‘I am sure he has been training hard and is excited to get back out there and compete. I am sure in time, providing that his body is good, that he will play top-level tennis again because he is that good.

‘Even if there is a slight drop-off physically for him, I would back his skill against most players. I am sure he will be fine.’

Liverpool identify three replacements for contract rebel Gini Wijnaldum
The Dutch midfielder is set to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool are now braced for Georginio Wijnaldum to leave the club when his contract expires this summer and have three players on their radar as a potential replacement, according to reports.

The 30-year-old Dutchman, who was described as Liverpool’s most consistent player by manager Jurgen Klopp, is believed to be keen for a new challenge and is not expected to sign a contract extension with the Merseysiders.

Wijnaldum has already been linked with a host of top clubs around Europe, including Barcelona – where he could be reunited with Ronald Koeman – and Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

Florian Neuhaus Borussia Mönchengladbach v Borussia Dortmund - DFB Cup: Quarter Final
Gladbach’s Florian Neuhaus is one option Liverpool are considering (Picture: Getty)

While Liverpool had hoped to convince Wijnaldum to remain at Anfield, they are becoming increasingly resigned to his departure and, according to Goal.com, have started drawing up a list of potential replacements.

Chief among them is Borussia Monchengladbach’s Florian Neuhaus, who is widely expected to leave the German this club – a switch to Dortmund with Marco Rose has been mooted.

However, Liverpool are also interested in the 23-year-old, who has a similar playing style to Wijnaldum, and they would be able to afford the £35million release clause he has in his Gladbach contract.

Another, more familiar option Liverpool have identified comes from the Premier League in the form of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

The 24-year-old Mali international again fits the age profile Liverpool target, as well as already being adapted to the Premier League.

His performances for Brighton over the past few seasons – particularly under Graham Potter – have caught the attention of a number of a bigger clubs, with Arsenal also said to be interested.

Liverpool target Houssem Aouar
A midfield of Thiago and Houssem Aouar would be mouth-watering (Picture: Getty Images)

The third and final option Liverpool will consider as a replacement for Wijnaldum is Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar.

Although a very different type of player to Neuhaus and Bissouma, the Frenchman is regarded as one of the best young midfielders in Europe and would bring more creativity and goal threat from midfield.

Aouar has netted five goals and laid on three assists in just 19 starts in Ligue 1 for Lyon this season and Liverpool have long-standing interest in the midfielder, who was also pursued by Arsenal last summer before they signed Thomas Partey.

Crystal Palace v Manchester United - Premier League
Manchester United have failed to score in over four hours (Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images)

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves was critical of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection after the Red Devils recorded their third consecutive 0-0 draw in a stalemate against Crystal Palace.

United’s failure to find the back of the net was extended to beyond four hours as Solskjaer’s side drew against Roy Hodgson’s men at Selhurst Park.

United’s form has nosedived in recent weeks and it was the third successive 0-0 draw in all competitions, following games against Real Sociedad and Chelsea in the last six days.

The Red Devils started in a 4-2-3-1 system against the Eagles, with Fred and Nemanja Matic sitting at the base of the midfield against the south Londoners.

While a draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was viewed as satisfactory, United needed to beat Palace to solidify second spot and Hargreaves believes Solskjaer’s negative tactics contributed to the side’s third consecutive draw.

United are now in a race for the top four. (Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images)

‘It’s their third 0-0 in a row they had one in the Europa League and they had one against Chelsea,’ Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

‘I can understand in the bigger teams when they’re playing against the better team they get a bit cautious, they try and play on the counter and defend well.

‘Today you knew the way Crystal Palace and Roy Hodgson would set-up so surely they had to (do something else). You think back to the goal with Vardy and Iheanacho where they link up when Vardy went inside and made that space for other players.

‘There was no running in behind or making space for other people. They were quite static, Palace were quite comfortable, everything was in front of them.

‘Sometimes you need somebody to make a run for somebody else, that didn’t happen. They tried to get Bruno on the ball but he was too crowded out.

‘I don’t think it was a game where you needed two defensive midfielders, Matic and Fred, who gave the ball away a lot as well so maybe find a way to get another attacker on when you dominate the ball. Ole will say one shot on target against a team that defensive, they definitely need more.’

United face the daunting prospect of a trip to the Etihad to take on rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won their last 21 matches in all competitions, though United have won on their last three trips to the blue side of Manchester.

Solskjaer hopes to have Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek available again after the pair missed the trip to Selhurst Park.
