Chelsea are growing increasingly confident of winning the race to sign Europe’s most in-demand striker, Erling Haaland, from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The Norway international burst onto the scene with RB Salzburg during last season’s Champions League group stage and has since cemented his reputation as one of world football’s most prolific forwards after signing for Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester rivals City and United are attempting to position themselves to make moves this summer with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who coached the 20-year-old during the early stages of his career at Molde, still in touch with his compatriot.

United are likely to be working with a modest transfer budget, however, and would struggle to match any package their local rivals could present to Haaland, even if they were to secure Champions League qualification and boost their funds through player sales.

Even then, a new centre-back partner, ideally a left-sided one, represents Solskjaer’s priority, while a new central midfielder will be required should Paul Pogba be sold.

Real Madrid and Barcelona, meanwhile, are also likely to lack the financial wherewithal to recruit Haaland this summer, while Bayern Munich are not an option at this stage with Robert Lewandowksi’s form showing no sign of deteriorating.

Reports from Germany earlier this week claimed Haaland was less than receptive to the idea of joining Chelsea but, according to ESPN, the Premier League big-spenders believe they have several factors in their favour.

Having invested upwards of £200million last summer, Roman Abramovich is unlikely to curtail his spending especially if, as seems increasingly likely, Thomas Tuchel secures Champions League qualification.

Chelsea could comfortably match any financial package City were able to put together, while the draw of London is thought to be a significant factor in their growing confidence.

Despite the raft of attacking options at his disposal, meanwhile, Tuchel is yet to settle on a first choice line leader and with doubts over the futures of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud, there is likely to be a ready-made spot for Haaland to fill at Stamford Bridge as the focal point of a new-look attack.

City, too, are likely to be in the market for a successor to Sergio Aguero who has played only a bit-part role in their domestic dominance this season, but their eyes remain still largely fixed on potentially reuniting Lionel Messi with Pep Guardiola.

India star Rishabh Pant scored a brilliant century against England
India star Rishabh Pant scored a brilliant century against England (Picture: Getty)

Rishabh Pant scored a stunning century to put India in a dominant position in the fourth Test against England and establish himself as one of the best players in world cricket.

India bowled England out for just 205 on day one of the final Test in Ahmedabad but threatened to forfeit a first-innings lead as they slipped to 146-6 on day two.

Pant came to the crease with his side struggling on 80-4 but turned the match on its head with a brilliant and fluent hundred – his third in Test cricket – eventually departing for 101 from 118 balls.

The 23-year-old frustrated England in the afternoon session before opening up after tea, hitting 15 boundaries including a reverse-sweep off England pace bowler James Anderson and a maximum off Joe Root to bring up his ton.

Pant found superb support from all-rounder Washington Sundar – who is unbeaten on 60 – as India reached the close on 294-7, a lead of 89.

Speaking on Channel 4, former England captain Andrew Strauss said: ‘Talk about match-defining innings, that’s what we’ve just seen. He’s single-handedly wrestled the game away from England and it’s a long way back for them now.’

Claressa Shields Media Workout
Shields has won gold at every turn in her career (Picture: Getty)

Claressa Shields believes she is the ‘second greatest of all-time’ behind Muhammad Ali – insisting ’98 per cent of men in the world can’t beat me.’

Just 25, Shields boasts an incredible boxing résumé across amateur and professional disciplines and is an undisputed star of the sport.

The American became the first boxer, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, triumphing at London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Since turning pro, she has won world titles at three different weight classes, reigning as the undisputed middleweight champion and is now out to unify the super-welterweight division when she takes on Marie-Eve Dicaire in Michigan on Friday night.

Already WBC and WBO champion, taking Dicaire’s IBF and the vacant WBA title will see her unify a division for the second time in her career.

Shields is also determined to carry her dominance over to the world of MMA, signing a deal with the Professional Fighters League earlier this year with her debut in the cage set for June.

And given her career achievements to date, Shields has now ditched her previous nickname T-Rex, now referring to herself as ‘The GWOAT’ (Greatest Woman of All Time).

‘I don’t box for a hobby. It’s not a hobby. It’s my career, and I feel like people underestimate me when I speak about how great I am,’ Shields said ahead of her latest title showdown.

‘But if I didn’t say how great I am, no one in this room would have ever called me great because they don’t recognise it. Only the greats know that they’re great.

‘Like Muhammad Ali. Nobody called him the greatest of all time. They actually called him the ‘Louisville Lip’ because he talked too much.

‘If he had never said he was the greatest of all time, he would have never been considered the greatest. No matter what boxer comes along, nobody can get in front of Muhammad Ali. That’s how I feel about myself.

‘Muhammad Ali is first, and Claressa Shields is second. I am the greatest woman of all time, and 98 per cent of men in the world can’t beat me.

‘I want you to know I’m not taking prisoners. This is a new era for me. My name from now on is Claressa ‘The GWOAT’ Shields. [Previous nickname] ‘T-Rex’ has long gone. ‘T-Rex’ was aggressive, but the greatest of all time has so much more.’

Dean Smith all but ruled Jack Grealish out of Aston Villa’s weekend clash with Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, although insisted the playmaker is ‘doing better’.

Grealish has not featured for Villa since a 0-0 draw with Brighton on February 13, missing defeats to Leicester and Sheffield United and a win over Leeds.

Smith has been coy over the exact leg issue facing the England international but it’s clear Villa are opting for a caution-first approach in bringing him back into the fold.

Grealish, 25, has not trained with his team-mates but is running again and Smith will take a final check on him on Friday.

‘He’s doing better but is unlikely to feature on Saturday,’ said Smith.

‘I haven’t sat down with the medical staff yet but he was running on the AlterG (anti-gravity treadmill) yesterday, which is a positive because if he’s running it means he’s pain-free.

Dean Smith head coach of Aston Villa talks to the press during a press conference at Bodymoor Heath training ground on March 02, 2021 in Birmingham, England.
Smith admitted Grealish is unlikely to play (Picture: Getty)

‘But he didn’t get out onto the grass yesterday, so he’s unlikely to play against Wolves. But, it’s a positive he’s out running now.

‘I haven’t sat down with the medical staff. I’ll do that after the press conference.’

On the rest of Villa’s absentees, Smith added: ‘Matty Cash is back striking balls now so I expect him to be back in training pretty soon.

‘Kortney Hause, the same. With Wesley, we’ll advance his training and, hopefully, get him into an under-23 game soon.’

Liverpool lose again at home
Liverpool’s lack of a creative edge cost them again against Chelsea (Picture: Getty)

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool are missing a traditional no10 in their side following Thursday’s defeat to Chelsea.

Liverpool fell to their fifth consecutive home defeat thanks to Mason Mount’s winner with Jurgen Klopp’s side now four points off the top four.

The Premier League champions have scored just one goal in their last six games on Merseyside with their inability to breakdown the opposition a cause for concern with the club now deep in a battle for Champions League qualification heading into the season run-in.

Liverpool’s struggles to press with the same intensity that drove them to last season’s title has been widely discussed during their recent struggles and club legend Carragher believes that leaves the club needing more creativity further up the pitch.

‘Jurgen Klopp famously said, his pressing is better than any number 10, but when you watch Liverpool, you feel like they need a number 10 – they need that type of player because the pressing isn’t there’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho left Liverpool in 2018 (Picture: Getty)

‘I don’t know if it’s the same players playing week-in, week-out, off the back of four or five years of high-intensity football. Who knows what it is?

‘”We’ll maybe nearly get to the bottom of it next season when we see the crowds back and maybe more of a normal season, but they just don’t seem right in terms of energy and pace at the moment.’

Philippe Coutinho played that role at Anfield for many years before leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in January 2018. And while Carragher stopped short of calling for a replacement, he believes the current squad lacks that sort of creative force.

‘Teams have come and defended deep and they haven’t got anyone between the lines to play that pass, they have Coutinho who went and they built in other areas.

‘I’m not saying they should go and buy that, but without the actual pressing quality they have now in terms of creating chances, they haven’t really got anyone who can make that final pass.’

Ashley Cole is a big admirer of Mason Mount and believes the midfielder has become Chelsea’s ‘best player’.

Mount was the match winner on Thursday night as his well crafted goal was enough to beat Liverpool and help Thomas Tuchel’s side climb into the top-four.

It was another high-energy and quality performance from the 22-year-old, who has won over new boss Tuchel having previously earned the trust of former manager Frank Lampard.

Cole, the former Chelsea and Arsenal left-back, now believes the England international is the ‘first name on the team sheet’ and thinks he is a contender to be the club captain next season.

‘I’ve been with him at Derby, I’ve watched him at Chelsea,’ Cole told Sky Sports after the 1-0 win.

‘I’ve seen the dedication, the hard work, the graft he puts in. Not just in the training session but after.

‘For me, he’s the best player for Chelsea and the first name on the team sheet.

He added: ‘What he produced today was brilliant. He’s one of the most focal players in this team. He presses with intensity.

‘He is the one who initiates the press. He’s got the movement. He’s got the understanding. And he’s adding goals to his game.

‘What a player he is. He’s got that attitude. Definitely next season he’ll be pushing for captaincy.’

Andy Robertson says he and his Liverpool team-mates have been ‘nowhere near good enough’ recently after they slumped to another Anfield defeat to Chelsea.

Robertson and co. have now lost five matches on the spin at their home ground, with Mason Mount’s strike enough to seal victory for Thomas Tuchel’s away side on Thursday night.

While Chelsea climbed into the top-four, defending champions Liverpool are now four points off the coveted Champions League spots – a gap that could increase further if Everton and West Ham win their games in hand.

Robertson has grown frustrated by the manner of recent defeats and feels ‘too many heads are going down’ in the Liverpool dressing room.

‘These games are won and lost on fine margins and these goals can’t happen. For us to get beaten on the counter attack is not good enough,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘Five home games without a win, that is nowhere near good enough. Nothing is going to help the fans at home and it is simply not good enough because games are running out for what we want.

‘Too many heads are going down when we go 1-0 down, we can’t do that. Football is about taking knocks.

‘We can’t rely on the past. Last season is over with, it is done.

‘We have nowhere near been good enough to what Liverpool team should be. We are dropping further and it is not good enough.

‘Games are running out and we need to put the pressure on the teams below us.

‘People will think we are down and out and we need to get the results to show them we are not. At the moment we are not doing that.’

Dimitar Berbatov 'liked' the Manchester United team-mate's row
Dimitar Berbatov ‘liked’ the Manchester United team-mate’s row (Pictures: Getty)

Dimitar Berbatov has explained why he ‘liked’ Marcus Rashford’s expletive-ridden row with Manchester United teammate Harry Maguire.

Rashford clashed with Red Devils captain Maguire during United’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

The forward told his United and England teammate to ‘shut the f*** up’ after being criticised for failing to stay onside during an attacking move.

But Berbatov was not concerned by the row and in fact says he ‘liked’ seeing Rashford and Maguire arguing because it demonstrated passion and commitment to the cause.

He told Betfair: ‘Things got a little heated with Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire, but I like that. It’s good in a game to have that fire and passion to fight.

‘Aggression shows you are passionate and you care about the game. You don’t want to be silent, because that tells me you don’t care.

‘Of course, things like this need to stay on the pitch, although you might carry it on a little bit in the changing room, but as long as it doesn’t interfere with your commitment to the team, it’s ok.

Marcus Rashford clashed with Red Devils captain Harry Maguire

‘These things happened to me when I was playing. I’d tell defenders how to do their job and defenders would tell me how to do my job when I wasn’t scoring goals.

‘When things aren’t going right in a game and you think your teammates can do more and you are running high on adrenalin, you need to push and push and even argue with teammates if necessary.

‘I had it a lot in my career, arguing and screaming with teammates, and I’m fine with it. It’s all for the purpose of helping the team to win games.

‘Rio [Ferdinand] used to always run his mouth and tell everyone what to do, I used to give it back to him by telling him how to defend and to pass it to me, to my feet, instead of clearing the ball high.

‘It’s always good to put a bit of fire in your teammates, it’s a two way street and when you play on that to help you win it’s a good thing.’

The goalless draw at Crystal Palace left Manchester United 14 points behind Premier League leaders Man City, who they face on Sunday.

Fenerbahce v Fraport TAV Antalyaspor - Turkish Super Lig
Mesut Ozil suffered a knee ligament injury during Fenerbahce’s match against Antalyaspor (Picture: Getty)

Mesut Ozil revealed he suffered an ‘outer ligament tear’ during Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw against Antalyaspor last night.

The former Arsenal star signed for the Turkish club in January having been frozen out by Mikel Arteta and was hoping to relaunch his career and rebuild his reputation with the club he supported during his childhood.

Ozil has failed to score or register an assist in his six apperances for Fenerbahce so far and missed a glorious opportunity to open the scoring last night, but missed what was effectively an open goal with Ruud Boffin way out of position.

The former Real Madrid playmaker’s night got worse, however, when, midway through the second-half, he was fouled by Antalyaspor goalscorer Fredy, went over on his ankle and subsequently taken off on a stretcher in apparent agony.

Ozil could now miss the next six weeks, but the player revealed on Instagram that the injury was not as serious as it might have been.

He said: ‘Really sad that I won’t be able to help my team due to an outer ligament tear in the next few games, but it could have been worse and I’ll try everything to be back on the pitch soon. Thanks for all your messages & support.’

In Ozil’s absence, meanwhile, Arteta has promoted from within and given youngster Emile Smith Rowe the opportunity to nail down a regular first team place.

The 20-year-old has played a prominent role in eye-catching victories over the likes of Chelsea and Leicester, but the highly-rated midfielder suffered a setback against the Foxes last weekend.

Arsenal face a testing trip to Burnley on Saturday but Arteta is hopeful the academy graduate will be back before too long.

‘Emile had a scan yesterday,’ Arteta revealed on Wednesday. ‘It doesn’t look a significant injury but he was in discomfort. For the rest, hopefully everybody should be okay.’

Ilaix Moriba

Manchester United have made a ‘firm offer’ to sign Barcelona starlet Ilaix Moriba.

18-year-old Moriba has been with the Catalan giants since he was seven years old, progressing through the club’s La Masia academy and now regarded as one of Barca’s brightest talents.

Ronald Koeman has set about introducing the midfielder to the first-team in recent months, handing him a senior debut in a Copa del Rey clash against Cornella in January with the player making his La Liga debut against Alaves in February, marking the occasion with an assist.

The Spain Under-18 international came off the bench as Barcelona sealed a memorable fight back against Sevilla to book their place in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday.

According to Mundo Deportivo there are several clubs across Europe interesting in prising Moriba, who is represented by super-agent Jonathan Barnett, away from the Camp Nou.

With his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2022, United have already made an offer for his services, along with RB Leipzig.

The youngster is said to have a €100million release clause written into his current contract.

However, the report adds Moriba may choose to remain at Barcelona to repay the faith shown in him by head coach Ronald Koeman, who has placed his trust in the club’s youngsters during a difficult season.

Barcelona fought back from 2-0 down in the first leg to seal a 3-2 win over Sevilla this week. They will meet Athletic Bilbao, last season’s winners, in the final in April.
