Tropical Cyclone Narelle could make 3 landfalls, forecast says

On the other side of the world, atropical cyclonechurning through Australia has made landfall as a Category 4 storm and could make up to two more landfalls as the storm progresses through the weekend.

USA TODAY

Tropical Cyclone Narelle made landfall the morning of March 20 as a Category 4 storm, moving over land in Far North Queensland in remote parts of Australia, according to the country's Bureau of Meteorology.

(To clarify, hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same type of storm, known collectively as tropical cyclones. They have different names depending on what part of the world they form in.)

Since making landfall, the storm brought severe rainfall to the region as it tracked west, most recently located over the Gulf of Carpentaria. It has weakened to a Category 2 tropical cyclone, but is expected to undergo a period of reintensification as it prepares to make landfall again, forecasters said.

Narelle is the strongest tropical cyclone to strike Queensland since 2014, AccuWeather reported.

"There is a lot of rain in this system, and as it moves it will be hard and fast," Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said during a news conference.

Though this storm will have no impact on the United States, it's a reminder that theNorth Atlantic hurricane season will soon approach. The North Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle will keep impacting Australia for days

The night of March 20 local time, Narelle was a Category 2 storm with wind speeds of about 60 mph, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

When it made its first landfall, Narelle brought destructive winds up to 120 mph, along with heavy rain and power outages to the northeast coast as authorities warned people to stay indoors. There were some early reports of structural damage and downed trees.

Narelle was moving west at about 11 mph. It is expected to make a second landfall on the eastern Northern Territory the night of March 21 or early morning of March 22 as a Category 3 storm. It will continue its track west, potentially weakening to a tropical low as it moves across the Top End region on March 22 and March 23. Redevelopment into a tropical cyclone is expected next week, and depending on the storm's path, a third landfall is possible, AccuWeather reported.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle is impacting northern Australia on March 20 after making landfall as a Category 4 storm. Weakened to a Category 2, Narelle could undergo restrengthening and make up to two more landfalls, forecasters have said.

Across the Northern Territory on March 21, "very destructive winds" are expected in coastal areas between Birany Birany and Numbulwar, the bureau said. Heavy rain and flash flooding are also a risk.

Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones definitions

Hurricanes form in the Atlantic basin, along with the eastern and central Pacific basins. Typhoons form in the western Pacific, while cyclones (aka tropical cyclones) form in the Indian Ocean and in the South Pacific.

Unlike the North Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November, the South Indian Ocean cyclone season typically runs from November through April, similar to the Southern Hemisphere cyclone seasons near Australia.

This town just recorded the hottest March temperature in US history

A small Arizona community broke the record for highest temperature ever recorded in March in the United States, reaching a scorching 110 degrees on March 19amid an early heat wave in the Southwest.

USA TODAY

The temperature reached 110 degrees on March 19 near Martinez Lake, a recreation community in southwestern Arizona, about 45 minutes north of Yuma, the National Weather Servicesaid.

The previous March temperature record was first set in 1954 in Rio Grande, Texas, at 108 degrees. That record was also matched during this heat wave onMarch 18near North Shore, California, according to the weather service.

The news comes as Arizona, California and other Southwestern states have faced an unprecedented early heat wave for multiple days. The heat is the result of a high-pressure system spinning across the West, causing "an expansive dome of unusually hot temperatures," the weather service has said.

The resulting temperatures are unprecedented.

More than 18 million Americans remain under extreme heat warnings the morning of March 20 across Southern California, southern Nevada, and much of Arizona. Millions more were under heat advisories.

Heat wave shatters numerous daily, monthly records

The heat wave that set in earlier this week has already shattered daily high temperature records in cities throughout the Southwest and even some all-time March records.

Temperatures on March 19 in Phoenixsoared to 105 degrees, breaking the record of 97 for the same date in 2017, according to the weather service. With an extreme heat warning in effect for metro Phoenix, temperatures jumped into the three-digit range by around 1 p.m. The high temperature in Phoenix was around 25 degrees above normal. The first 105-degree day of the year, on average, normally occurs on May 22nd, the weather serviceposted on X.

Phoenix doesn't usually reach 100 degrees for the first time in a year until about May 10, though before this year, itsearliest-recorded 100-degree day in a yearwas March 26, 1988.

In the Los Angeles region, daily records dating back decadeshave been broken since the heat wave began. In Downtown Los Angeles on March 17, the high got to 98 degrees, smashing the record of 94 set over a century ago in 1914.

Cities in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming have brokenall-time March records.

The True Story Behind Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy's Fight in 'Love Story'

Episode 7 of Love Story depicts a fight between Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her sister-in-law Caroline Kennedy.

The Gist

  • The argument was indeed a "tense" moment between the two women in real life.

  • It happened at a dinner party shortly after John and Carolyn's top-secret wedding on Cumberland Island, Georgia.

ThoughLove Storyis a fictionalized account ofJohn F. Kennedy Jr.andCarolyn Bessette-Kennedy's legendary romance, critics of the show have been quick to point out discrepancies between its script and the late couple'sreal-life relationship. First there was the uproar about Carolyn'shairandwardrobe; most recently,Daryl Hannahhad to set the record straight regarding her "not even remotely accurate representation." On the other hand, some scenesarehistorically accurate, for the most part—including the fight between Carolyn and her sister-in-lawCaroline Kennedyin episode 7.

The scene takes place during a dinner party hosted shortly after John and Carolyn'stop-secret weddingon Cumberland Island, Georgia. When one of Caroline's kids starts getting rowdy, Carolyn takes her downstairs to chill out. It's not clear if the girl is supposed to beRose or Tatiana, but in real life, it was actually Caroline's sonJack Schlossberg, not one of her daughters.

Tensions rise from there. Ahead, a reminder of what happens next inLove Storyand how Murphy's fictionalized retelling compares to the real thing.

After John and Carolyn said "I do" in a secret ceremony on Cumberland Island, Georgia, the couple returned to NYC and hosted a small dinner for some friends who didn't make it to the wedding. Caroline Kennedy, her husband Edwin Schlossberg, and the couple's three children came along, though they were present at the nuptials (her son Jack was the ring bearer and her daughters Rose and Tatiana were flower girls). JFK Jr.'s friend Jack Merrill later remembered the evening as a "classic Park Avenue dinner party," perPeople.

It was related to one of Caroline Kennedy's children.

Caroline's kids were small at the time and thus "rambunctious."  In her 2024 bookJFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, John's former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio wrote that Jack in particular was "running around and a little restless." Carolyn subsequently took him "in her arms" and "went downstairs with him into the lobby." (InLove Story, it's one of Caroline's daughters, not her son.)

Given the presence of paparazzi gathered outside the building, however, Caroline was "upset" and felt that Carolyn was being "irresponsible," according to Terenzio.

Recounting the exchange, Terenzio wrote that Carolyn was "shocked" that Caroline thought she would "go downstairs and intentionally expose Jack to that."

"She was like, 'I would never do something like that—I would never take him outside in front of the paparazzi,'" the author wrote, noting that the building was secure thanks to three doormen and security guards. "Carolyn said, 'It's not like I took him outside. I took him down the elevator and back up. I wasn't parading around the lobby with him.'"

"She was surprised at the reaction," Terenzio added. "It was tense."

After the fight, they were "a little distant, but respectful."

Following the argument inLove Story, John has lunch with his sister to smooth things over, telling her that he's had a "stressful" few months and that "not talking" hasn't made things easier. In real life, however, the duo were famously close. A friend of the family toldPeoplethat the two siblings and their respective spouses were "a little distant, but respectful" in the aftermath of the fight, but that's it.

"They would go over to Caroline's for dinner every few weeks," the source added. "Carolyn would always bring gifts for the kids. [...] And she always picked something special for Caroline."

So that understanding helped a lot," he reflected. "We just started connecting little by little and got stronger and stronger and stronger."
