Joel Matip will be ready to return from injury in Liverpool’s pre-season preparations over the summer, confirmed Jurgen Klopp on Tuesday afternoon.

It was confirmed on Monday that Matip would miss the rest of the season after damaging ankle ligaments in the Premier League clash with Tottenham last week.

It was yet another injury blow for Liverpool, specifically their central defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez also ruled out for months to come.

Klopp can scarcely believe how unlucky his centre-backs have been with serious injuries this season, but says the only positive is that Matip should be fully fit to start the next campaign.

‘I have not the right words for it, the things that happen to the boys right now is incredible,’ Klopp told a press conference.

‘The latest one with Joel is a big big blow for all of us because you don’t just lose a player on the pitch for months, you lose as well the person in the dressing room for a while.

‘There are surgeries necessary so they are out for a while and you lose close contact.

‘All those things, you don’t need that in the moment when the world is not in the best place anyway.

‘All these things are really harsh. It was really unlucky anyway when you saw this challenge with [Heung-min] Son, it was a really good challenge and he played on, which is unbelievable.

‘He came in at half time, we tried to strap him and while we were strapping him, the ankle blew up so there was no chance then, obviously.

‘It is absolutely not good, there is nothing good to say about it.

‘The only thing is that we have kind of a time frame and he will be back for pre-season and that’s great.

‘He will have enough time for all things to settle and time to work on the specific things that will make him stronger for the future.’

With Fabinho also out injured, Klopp has dipped into the transfer market to bring in Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.

Liverpool host Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday and neither new signing is expected to be involved that quickly.

Christian Pulisic insists Chelsea have a ‘new outlook’ under Thomas Tuchel and says it has been a ‘positive start’ under Frank Lampard’s replacement.

Former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel enjoyed his first win in charge of Chelsea on Sunday as the Blues beat Burnley 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel has now been at Chelsea for almost a week, having been appointed as Lampard’s replacement following an alarming run of form.

‘It’s been good so far,’ Pulisic told Chelsea’s official website. ‘We’ve got a new outlook on things, we have had a really good win so it’s been a positive start.

‘It’s been some crazy times recently and just to get a win left all the guys in the changing room really excited. We have had a lot of fun in training and there are smiles on faces which is good to see.’

Tuchel handed Pulisic his debut at Borussia Dortmund and says he was ‘grateful’ for the manager’s support during his the start of his Bundesliga career.

‘I remember making my debut under him and it was a really exciting time,’ the USA international added.

‘I was playing in the youth team at Dortmund and then I got the call to say I was going to go up and train with the first team, and be a full first team member. It was really exciting.

‘I had to fight my way into that team because it was a very strong team, and being a young player I had to work extra hard.

‘The manager trusted in me and most importantly gave me chances to play, so I am grateful for that. He definitely helped me as a young player and I only have good memories of that time.

‘We had some success at Dortmund together, and it’s been good to see him again and work with him once more.’

Chelsea face London rivals Tottenham on Thursday evening and Pulisic says his team-mates are feeling ‘confident’ ahead of the Premier League clash.

He said: ‘It’s a good time to play them coming off a good result for us.

‘We’re feeling confident. We’re really excited. It’s a good chance to make a statement and most importantly really build some momentum.

‘We know what a good result against a good team could do for us.’

Chelsea are currently seventh in the Premier League, one place behind Tottenham, who have lost their last two fixtures under Jose Mourinho.

Geoffrey Boycott believes Sachin Tendulkar could be surpassed as the record run-scorer

Geoffrey Boycott has hailed Joe Root and says the England Test captain is one of four current players who can surpass India legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Root overtook Boycott, Kevin Pietersen and David Gower to become England’s fourth-leading run-scorer of all time during the 2-0 series sweep in Sri Lanka.

The 30-year-old, who will become the 14th player to make 100 Test appearances for England in the first match against India on Friday, scored a double century and 186 against Sri Lanka.

Boycott believes Root can go on to play 200 matches for England and says he could even break Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs scored.

India captain Virat Kohli, Australia star Steve Smith and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson are in the same boat, according to the former England batsman.

‘Forget just scoring more Test runs for England than David Gower, Kevin Pietersen and myself,’ Boycott wrote in a column for Telegraph Sport.

‘Joe Root has the potential to play 200 Tests and score more runs than even Sachin Tendulkar.

Joe Root sits fourth on England's list of run-scorers

‘Root is only 30. He has played 99 Tests and scored 8,249 runs already. As long as he does not suffer serious injury there is no reason why he cannot beat Tendulkar’s all-time record of 15,921.

‘His contemporaries, such as Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson, are wonderful players as well who could also score that many runs.

‘We should enjoy Root and only judge him alongside those guys, not great names of the past because every player is a product of their environment.’

Before Root sets his sights on Tendulkar’s tally, he must first surpass Alec Stewart, Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook to become England’s most prolific run-scorer.

Michael Atherton, the former England captain, has backed Root to reach and go past Cook and says he is already one of the country’s best-ever players.

‘He’s racking up a fantastic career now and sometimes I think we’re blase about someone like Joe Root,’ Atherton told Sky Sports.

‘He’s 30 years of age, Graham Gooch’s best years came after the age of 36 – I’m not saying Joe Root will improve beyond 36; Ricky Ponting reckons you don’t improve beyond 33, but he’s got three years now until 33 so he could certainly reach a high plateau before then.

‘If you’re looking at Alastair Cook there, 12,000-plus Test runs, why can’t he go and challenge that record number of runs? He’s a young man still and he’s maybe got some of his best years ahead of him.

‘He looks driven and committed and of the players that I’ve seen for England – so I’m going back to the mid-to-late 1980s – if you said to me that I could take any of them, I’d take four: Gooch, Gower, Pietersen and Root, he is one of England’s best.’

David Moyes, Manager of West Ham United walks out prior to the second half during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and West Ham United at Selhurst Park on January 26, 2021 in London, England. David Moyes believes Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is the ‘best player in the Premier League right now’.

Moyes will line his West Ham side up to face off against Grealish’s Villa on Wednesday night in a battle between two sides who are harbouring hopes of landing European football for next season.

West Ham currently sit fifth in the table but will slip behind ninth-placed Villa should they be beaten at Villa Park.

Dean Smith’s side also have two games in hand on The Hammers. If they won both they would be just a point off fourth-placed Leicester.

It’s been a remarkable turnaround for both sides. They drew on the final day of last season – a point that saw Villa survive in the division – as both outfits finished just above the relegation zone. Now, however, they have Europe in their sights.

One man who is, understandably, getting the plaudits for Villa’s rapid rise is England international Grealish.

He has scored six goals and provided nine assists in the Premier League this season and Moyes thinks he is the best player in the league ‘at this time’.

‘He is a really good player and probably the best player in the Premier League at this time,’ he said.

‘He has done such a big job at that club and is probably the best player in the league right now.’

Moyes admitted his side were fortunate to win the reverse fixture 2-1 and hailed the quality in Villa’s ranks.

‘We found it tough when we played them at home and were probably fortunate to win it in the end,’ added Moyes.

‘They’ve done incredibly well when you think we played them at the end of last season and they needed the point to stay up. They’ve made great strides and have an improving team.

‘I think it all comes down to recruitment. Last year Dean Smith said they brought in one or two players who took time to settle, but this year they’ve signed very good players.

‘They also have improving players – Grealish, [John] McGinn, [Tyrone] Mings, [Ezri] Konsa.

‘They have a good side and have recruited well and that’s why they’re in the position they’re in.’

David Moyes has defended West Ham’s decision to not sign a striker during the Janaury transfer window.

The Hammers allowed Sebastien Haller to join Ajax for around €22.5 million (£20.2m) last month but a replacement for the 26-year-old was not brought in before Monday’s deadline.

It’s understood that West Ham were offered the chance to sign Diego Costa on multiple occasions during the January window.

The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer having left Atletico Madrid in December, but West Ham have turned down the opportunity.

And while Moyes insists the funds are available to bolster his attacking options, West Ham are ‘trying to do things different’ after a series of failed signings.

‘We didn’t get one but we were looking and we wanted to try and pick correctly,’ said Moyes.

‘We had money to spend, we sold Seb earlier in the window so we had that, but we are trying to do things different at West Ham.

‘We’re not going to follow the same path we have been following before.

‘I chose to keep my money and hopefully we can start another rebuild come the summer time.’

West Ham also missed out on signing Josh King as he completed his move from Bournemouth to Everton on deadline day.
