Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin couldn’t resist a sly dig at referee Craig Pawson after the Gunners’ unbeaten run was ended by Wolves on Tuesday night.

The Gunners dominated the first half at Molineux and took a deserved lead through a fine effort from Nicolas Pepe.

Mikel Arteta’s side had several chances to double their advantage but their night collapsed just seconds before the half-time whistle when David Luiz was sent off for bringing down Willian Jose, even though replays showed there was minimal contact.

Ruben Neves converted the resulting penalty and Wolves took the lead shortly after the break via a stunning strike from Joao Moutinho from long-range.

Arsenal’s night went from bad to worse when Bernd Leno was sent off 15 minutes from time for handling outside the area and Wolves saw out the victory against a nine-man Gunners side.

While Leno’s was widely accepted as a sending off, Arteta was furious about Luiz’s red card and says he’s watched numerous replays and cannot see any contact.

And it’s clear what Bellerin thought of the officiating at Molineux as the Spaniard took to Instagram with a cryptic post hitting out at referee Pawson.

Bellerin posted a caption-less photo of Pawson fist-bumping with Wolves captain Connor Coady, with the Spaniard looking on.

The former Barcelona man did later concede that Arsenal’s disciplinary record is not good enough.

Bellerin says it’s particularly frustrating as it feels like the club are defeating themselves by playing with 10-men.

‘One hundred per cent [we’ve had too many red cards],’ said Bellerin.

‘We’ve shown that when we’re 11 against 11 on that pitch, it’s completely different. We had complete control in the first half and we probably should have been 2-0 up by the end of it. We paid for those mistakes.

‘I always say that teams are not beating us, we are losing against ourselves. It’s for us to learn. Hopefully this will be the last time. We were on such a good run, great momentum, great confidence in the team.

‘We just need to forget this step because situations like this are not going to happen very often. We’ll go on to the next one.’

Gabriel Magalhaes reacted furiously on Instagram in the wake of Arsenal’s controversial defeat to Wolves last night and questioned Craig Pawson’s decision to send-off David Luiz.

Arsenal produced, arguably, their most coherent 45 minutes of the season to date in the first-half at Molineux and were unfortunate to be only 1-0 ahead by the time Luiz was given his marching orders moments before the interval.

Bukayo Saka hit the post in the opening two minutes before having a goal ruled out for off-side for VAR. Nicoles Pepe eventually struck the visitors into a deserved lead just after the half hour mark, but the sides went in level at the break after when Ruben Neves smashed home a penalty in injury-time.

The Portugal international was afforded the opportunity to equalise from the spot after Willian Jose was felled when clean through on goal, despite Luiz unintentionally making contact with the back of the striker’s knee.

Referee Craig Pawson’s decision turned the tide in Wolves’ favour and the home side ultimately grabbed all three points thanks to Joao Moutinho’s long-range thunderbolt shortly after the re-start.

Arsenal suffered further ignominy when goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sent-off for deliberate handball, but Gabriel, who was introduced at the start of the second period in place of Alexandre Lacazette, could not believe his compatriot Luiz was handed a red card and posted a picture of the incident with a string of angry emojis.

Asked after the match whether or not Arsenal would appeal the decision, Mikel Arteta said: ‘Well, on my understanding here I wouldn’t say ‘yes, let’s go straight away because I think we have a big chance’. But I don’t know, I will speak to legal and the club and make the best decision of what to do.

‘If there’s any contact, it’s him [Willian Jose] with David. That’s what I’ve seen, but I don’t know if they have a different angle of what I have or maybe what you have.

‘That’s where the disappointment is coming from. It’s hard enough to win football matches in the league and those big decisions are like that, but there’s nothing we can change at the moment.’

Philip Neville made Lucy Bronze his England vice captain

It feels like a lot has happened in England terms already this year and what an exciting few weeks it has been.

First of all, it is time to say goodbye to outgoing manager Phil Neville and wish him well in Miami. Our captain Steph Houghton and I are both close with Phil and I know he was dying to manage Team GB at the Olympics, but the opportunity to go to Inter Miami was something he wanted to take.

He texted us all recently and put a long message on the group chat about the England team and his time with us. Phil made me vice-captain and gave me the armband on several occasions. I had never been skipper before and he was the one who gave me a level of responsibility alongside Steph. He will be missed.

After the 2019 World Cup, Phil took a lot of criticism and he may also have thought it was time for a fresh start.

Our new boss Sarina Wiegman will take over after she has led Holland at the Tokyo Olympics this summer and we are super-excited for that.

There was a gap to fill between now and then, and Hege Riise is joining the Lionesses right away. It is an exciting prospect to be coached by someone who has accomplished so much, especially looking at her success as a player.

Hege is one of only three people to have won the trio of World Cup, European Championship and Olympic gold – exactly what I want to do with England and Great Britain. I want to say to her ‘teach me!’.

She has coached good players who have come and played in England and I couldn’t be happier about the appointments the FA has made. I have always wanted to see these winners be part of the set-up.

People always talk about the current world champions the USA and their winning mentality. Well, the calibre of coaches we are going to have are the sort of people who know how to win.

Anyone who knows me will tell you I hate losing. I sometimes hate losing more than I love winning, that’s how strongly I feel about it. So I hope we can instil that winning way in the team now, at all costs.

I know Sarina’s brief will be to get England to win a trophy. I know some people will talk about whether the appointment should have been homegrown, and whether it’s good that we have a female coach again, but if someone is the person most capable of being successful, then they are the one who has to come in.

I know the squad believe they just want the coach who gives us the best opportunity to win something. I don’t think Sarina will think she has a massive job to do to turn us into winners. It’s not a big step in some ways but it is in others. I know Sarina and her staff are capable of helping us to do that.

As a Lionesses player, there is only one way to look at the future now and that is with great excitement at the prospect of what we might be able to achieve under Sarina and Hege.

David Luiz shown a red card in Arsenal's Premier League defeat to Wolves

A frustrated Ian Wright has hit out at referee Craig Pawson’s ‘ridiculous’ decision to send David Luiz off in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves and insists the defender should have remained on the pitch despite his foul on Willian Jose.

The Gunners started brightly at Molineux and took the lead thanks to Nicolas Pepe’s sublime solo effort in the 32nd minute but Luiz was adjudged to have fouled Willian Jose inside the box right on the stroke of half-time and the red card turned Tuesday’s Premier League match on its head.

Ruben Neves equalised with the resulting penalty and Joao Moutinho fired in an unstoppable strike from 30 yards to give Wolves the lead before Bernd Leno became the second Arsenal player to be given his marching orders for handling the ball outside his area.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side kept hold of their narrow advantage to win for the first time since mid-December, while Arsenal must quickly lick their wounds ahead of their trip to ninth-placed Aston Villa this weekend, who sit just one point above them in the table.

On Luiz’s sending off, legendary ex-Arsenal striker Wright told Premier League Productions: ‘The way he’s supposedly meant to have challenged him and stopped a goalscoring opportunity when he’s round the back of him, I just can’t understand that one.

‘Maybe it’s because I’m an Arsenal man but it’s very tough to take, especially how we started.

‘We started the game so well. It was a brilliant start for Arsenal. I thought this was one of those where if they could have taken a couple of those chances early on – they hit the post and hit the bar – it could have been a romp.

‘But David Luiz on the halfway line, he goes in and gets caught out coming back.

‘He clips him on the back, it just really seems so harsh for him to get a sending off. It’s very hard to take for Arsenal fans.’

Wright admitted he had no problem with the decision to award Wolves their penalty but criticised referee Pawson for brandishing a red card and ‘punishing’ what he felt was a ‘total accident’ from Luiz.

‘I’ve got so much sympathy because whether it’s intentional or not, that seems like a very harsh red card,’ Wright added.

‘He’s actually trying to get out the way, he’s trying to get back. He’s not changing his stride, he’s actually trying to slow his legs down and the rule says he stopped a goalscoring opportunity. And he’s sent off for that?! It’s ridiculous.

‘The penalty is fine, I haven’t got a problem with that because he’s been impeded but it wasn’t intentional so why does he need to be sent off for that? It’s double jeopardy and he’s being punished for something that’s a total accident.’

Wright had less complaints when it came to Leno’s red card which he said was an ‘obvious’ sending off.

‘I don’t know what he’s doing there, he’s got himself in all sorts of problems. You can see it on his face there,’ the former England attacker continued.

‘He’s come out, he’s mistimed it, it’s skidded off the surface and it’s an obvious red card.’

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal - Premier League
Luiz was dismissed in Arsenal’s loss to Wolves (Picture: Getty Images)

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes David Luiz shouldn’t have been sent off in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday.

The Gunners had gone 1-0 up through Nicolas Pepe, but on the stroke of half-time, Luiz was given his marching orders as he was adjudged to have tripped Willian Jose in the box.

The contact was minimal and appeared unintentional from Luiz, however, referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot and sent him off.

Bednarek was also sent off for a similar incident against United

Ruben Neves scored the resulting penalty before Joao Moutinho won the game for Wolves at Molineux with a stunning strike from range.

Not long later, Arsenal’s troubles worsened as Bernd Leno was also dismissed for a bizarre clearance with his hands outside of the box.

A similar situation to the Luiz incident arose in United’s 9-0 trouncing of Southampton on the same evening, which was also full of red card drama.

Saints teenager Alexandre Jankewitz was sent off for a horror challenge on Scott McTominay inside just two minutes and Jan Bednarek also saw red for another contentious incident late on in the game at Old Trafford.

With United cruising at 6-0 up, Anthony Martial went down in the box under pressure from Bednarek, although the Poland international did everything he could to try and get out of his opponent’s way.

Referee Mike Dean immediately awarded a penalty, but then upon advice from VAR, went over to check his pitch-side monitor and also brandished a red card.

Like Luiz, Bednarek was deemed to have denied a goalscoring opportunity with no attempt to win the ball, however, Solskjaer feels neither challenges warranted penalties.

‘Funnily enough, I had a discussion with the referees before the game,’ Solskjaer said.

‘I asked them what they thought about the David Luiz sending off because I don’t think he should’ve been sent off either, and Bednarek definitely shouldn’t have been sent off.

‘The law needs to be looked at. But the letter of the law is if you foul someone, deny a goalscoring opportunity and you don’t attempt the ball, you’re going to be shown a red card.

‘There was contact there but it shouldn’t have been a sending off. I think everyone in football agrees on this.’

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool - Premier League
Joel Matip has been ruled out of the rest of the season through injury (Picture: Getty Images)

Joel Matip will be ready to return from injury in Liverpool’s pre-season preparations over the summer, confirmed Jurgen Klopp on Tuesday afternoon.

It was confirmed on Monday that Matip would miss the rest of the season after damaging ankle ligaments in the Premier League clash with Tottenham last week.

It was yet another injury blow for Liverpool, specifically their central defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez also ruled out for months to come.

Klopp can scarcely believe how unlucky his centre-backs have been with serious injuries this season, but says the only positive is that Matip should be fully fit to start the next campaign.

‘I have not the right words for it, the things that happen to the boys right now is incredible,’ Klopp told a press conference.

‘The latest one with Joel is a big big blow for all of us because you don’t just lose a player on the pitch for months, you lose as well the person in the dressing room for a while.

‘There are surgeries necessary so they are out for a while and you lose close contact.

‘All those things, you don’t need that in the moment when the world is not in the best place anyway.

‘All these things are really harsh. It was really unlucky anyway when you saw this challenge with [Heung-min] Son, it was a really good challenge and he played on, which is unbelievable.

Liverpool v West Ham United - Premier League
Jurgen Klopp has had to deal with multiple injuries in his defence this season (Picture: Getty Images)

‘He came in at half time, we tried to strap him and while we were strapping him, the ankle blew up so there was no chance then, obviously.

‘It is absolutely not good, there is nothing good to say about it.

‘The only thing is that we have kind of a time frame and he will be back for pre-season and that’s great.

‘He will have enough time for all things to settle and time to work on the specific things that will make him stronger for the future.’

With Fabinho also out injured, Klopp has dipped into the transfer market to bring in Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.

Liverpool host Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday and neither new signing is expected to be involved that quickly.

Christian Pulisic has rated Thomas Tuchel's impact at Chelsea

Christian Pulisic insists Chelsea have a ‘new outlook’ under Thomas Tuchel and says it has been a ‘positive start’ under Frank Lampard’s replacement.

Former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel enjoyed his first win in charge of Chelsea on Sunday as the Blues beat Burnley 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel has now been at Chelsea for almost a week, having been appointed as Lampard’s replacement following an alarming run of form.

‘It’s been good so far,’ Pulisic told Chelsea’s official website. ‘We’ve got a new outlook on things, we have had a really good win so it’s been a positive start.

‘It’s been some crazy times recently and just to get a win left all the guys in the changing room really excited. We have had a lot of fun in training and there are smiles on faces which is good to see.’

Tuchel handed Pulisic his debut at Borussia Dortmund and says he was ‘grateful’ for the manager’s support during his the start of his Bundesliga career.

‘I remember making my debut under him and it was a really exciting time,’ the USA international added.

‘I was playing in the youth team at Dortmund and then I got the call to say I was going to go up and train with the first team, and be a full first team member. It was really exciting.

‘I had to fight my way into that team because it was a very strong team, and being a young player I had to work extra hard.

‘The manager trusted in me and most importantly gave me chances to play, so I am grateful for that. He definitely helped me as a young player and I only have good memories of that time.

‘We had some success at Dortmund together, and it’s been good to see him again and work with him once more.’

Chelsea face London rivals Tottenham on Thursday evening and Pulisic says his team-mates are feeling ‘confident’ ahead of the Premier League clash.

He said: ‘It’s a good time to play them coming off a good result for us.

‘We’re feeling confident. We’re really excited. It’s a good chance to make a statement and most importantly really build some momentum.

‘We know what a good result against a good team could do for us.’

Chelsea are currently seventh in the Premier League, one place behind Tottenham, who have lost their last two fixtures under Jose Mourinho.
