Arsenal legend Ian Wright says he was disappointed with Mason Greenwood’s failure to get on the scoresheet in Manchester United’s 9-0 win against Southampton.

The Red Devils got their title challenge back on track with a record-equalling win against the Saints, which saw eight different scorers at Old Trafford.

Greenwood ended a barren run with a goal in the FA Cup win against Liverpool last month but the teenager still has just one league goal to his name this term, despite making 16 appearances.

The 19-year-old impressed with his wing play but his failure to score felt like a missed opportunity to boost his confidence and Wright believes Greenwood needs to learn to play between the posts to score more tap-ins.

Asked if Greenwood’s failure to score was disappointing, Wright told Premier League Prodctions: ‘Yeah because he’s a forward and he needs to score at the minute.

‘I thought he did some good stuff today but even when Daniel James came on Daniel James got himself in a situation when the ball came across when Bruno Fernandes headed it back that he got himself in the middle of the goal.

‘I didn’t see Mason Greenwood in the middle of the goal too many times on a day in which there was goals to be had.’

Despite failing to find the net, Greenwood’s performance was much improved on recent weeks.

And Solskjaer even made a point of singling out the teenager in his post-match press conference.

‘Confidence is one thing but it was about the mojo and spark, the X-Factor,’ Solskjaer told BBC Sport after the game.

‘Mason Greenwood was terrific and his performance was top for a player who did not score a goal.’

David Luiz was controversially sent off for Arsenal against Wolves

Granit Xhaka deleted an angry Instagram post after appearing to take a swipe at referee Craig Pawson following Arsenal’s controversial defeat against Wolves last night.

The Gunners looked to be on course for a victory that would have given their hopes of challenging for a top four spot a significant shot in the arm when Nicolas Pepe fired Mikel Arteta’s side ahead just past the half hour mark.

But the game turned either side of half-time with Wolves’ comeback sparked by David Luiz’s contentious sending off.

The experienced defender was given his marching orders for the third time in his Arsenal career when his knee inadvertently clipped Willian Jose and caused the Brazilian forward to lose his footing when clean through on goal.

Ruben Neves smashed home the subsequent penalty and Joao Moutinho secured all three points for the home side with a stupendous 35-yard strike five minutes after the restart.

Arsenal’s misery was compounded with 20 minutes remaining when goalkeeper Bernd Leno was dismissed for a deliberate handball offence after he had misjudged a long-ball aimed in the direction of Adama Traore.

A host of Arsenal players took to social media after the game to vent their frustration at the officiating that, in part, brought about an end to a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Xhaka initially posted a picture on his Instagram page of him gesticulating at Pawson, accompanied by the caption ‘feeling frustrated’. The Switzerland international swiftly removed the post that contained the image of the official and replaced it with a couple of generic stills from the match.

Asked afterwards, meanwhile, whether or not Arsenal would appeal Luiz’s red card, Arteta said: ‘Well, on my understanding here I wouldn’t say ‘yes, let’s go straight away because I think we have a big chance’. But I don’t know, I will speak to legal and the club and make the best decision of what to do.

‘If there’s any contact, it’s him [Willian Jose] with David. That’s what I’ve seen, but I don’t know if they have a different angle of what I have or maybe what you have. That’s where the disappointment is coming from.

‘It’s hard enough to win football matches in the league and those big decisions are like that, but there’s nothing we can change at the moment.’

Referee Craig Pawson sends off Bernd Leno in Arsenal's Premier League clash with Wolves

Arsenal’s official Facebook page tempted fate with the suggestion that Bernd Leno ‘loved’ playing against Wolves ahead of their trip to Molineux – and the post backfired spectacularly as the north London club fell apart on Tuesday night.

The Gunners twice struck the woodwork and had a penalty turned down in a bright start to the Premier League clash and the pressure told in the 32nd minute as Nicolas Pepe fired them in front with a brilliant solo effort.

However, David Luiz was controversially sent off for a foul on Willian Jose inside the box right on the stroke of half-time and referee Craig Pawson’s decision turned the match on its head, with Ruben Neves converting the resulting spot-kick.

Joao Moutinho gave the hosts the lead with a spectacular strike from 30 yards just four minutes into the second half and Arsenal’s implosion continued as Bernd Leno was given his marching orders for bizarrely handling the ball outside his area.

Wolves held on to secure their first league victory since their win over Chelsea back on December 15 and screenshots of Arsenal’s pre-match post about Leno began doing the rounds across social media.

‘Bernd Leno loves playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC 😍,’ Arsenal’s post said along with a highlights reel of Leno’s best bits versus Wolves.

‘More of this tonight, Bernd!’

Thomas Partey was sacrificed as third-choice ‘keeper Alex Runarsson came on for the remaining minutes after Leno’s red card at Molineux.

January arrival Mat Ryan was unavailable due to a hip injury but Arteta is hopeful the Australian could make his debut at Aston Villa this weekend, with Leno suspended.

Asked for an update on Ryan’s fitness following Arsenal’s loss, Mikel Arteta explained: ‘He had a muscular issue and in the last two days he hasn’t been able to train.

‘Hopefully we can get him back in the next few days.’

Pressed on Leno’s bizarre sending off, the Spaniard said: ‘I imagine he makes the decision in a split of a second.

‘Naturally he tries to stop the ball, there’s nothing he can do,’

Mayweather set for another return to the ring.

The proposed exhibition fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Logan Paul scheduled for this month has been postponed.

Five-weight world champion Mayweather was set to meet YouTube star Paul on February 20 but a statement from Fanmio – the online platform broadcasting the show – has now confirmed a new date is being discussed.

‘After an absolutely tremendous response to the fight announcement, we’re hoping to announce a new date very soon along with some new exciting details,’ Fanmio founder and CEO Solomon Engel said in the statement.

While the exact reasons for the cancellation have not been disclosed, Paul alluded to ‘business complications’ in a recent interview.

The 25-year-old however was adamant there is no ‘lack of interest’ around the fight. He told The Night Shift Gaming: ‘I’ve been a little upset with the narrative I’m seeing online, a little f*****g upset, so I’ll clear this up.

Paul made his pro debut in November 2019.

‘It’s just stupid. A guy who we had come to test to be a strength and conditioning coach leaked information about the fight.

‘As soon as this got out, he said that the fight was being pushed [back], I said, ‘F**k we’ve had a leak from inside our camp, no-one else was supposed to know that.’

‘Then the narrative changed to ‘Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul fight postponed due to lack of interest.’

Paul made his boxing debut under amateur status in 2018, drawing with British rival KSI before the two turned professional for their rematch a year later, losing on a split decision.

Mayweather, now 44, retired from boxing in 2016 after a final title defence against Andre Berto before returning a year later to beat UFC star Conor McGregor in one of the richest fights in combat sports history.

In December 2018, made another lucrative return to the ring, knocking out 20-year-old kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa under exhibition rules in Tokyo.

Logan’s brother Jake is also scheduled to fight under boxing rules in the coming months, taking on former Bellator champion and UFC contender Ben Askren.

Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger speaks out on Frank Lampard bust-up rumours
The German insists he played no role in his former manager’s dismissal (Picture: Getty Images)

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has rubbished suggestions he had a bust-up with skipper Cesar Azpilicueta and insists he did not play a role in Frank Lampard’s sacking.

The Germany international was rumoured to have spoken to Chelsea’s board and encouraged a change of manager, while his fructuous relationship with Azpilicueta was cited as one of the reasons the club opted to part ways with Lampard.

But Rudiger is adamant there was never any bust-up with his captain and says he had a good relationship with Lampard right up until his dismissal.

‘There have been so many nonsense rumours around about me since last week,’ Rudiger told The Athletic.

‘I’ve never talked with the board about the situation of the coach or on any other topics.

‘Frank Lampard trusted in my abilities after Christmas in a very difficult situation and I was thankful for this.

‘It was also the main reason I told my representatives not to look for a possible winter move anymore.

‘Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for our team to turn things around for the coach. We always wanted the best for the manager and for the club.’

On Azpilicueta, the centre-back continued: ‘There has never been any problem with Azpi. He’s my captain and I’m very thankful that he and also Tammy [Abraham] reacted that quickly after they’d heard the rumours on social media.

‘It looked like people from outside wanted to bother our unity in the squad.

‘Hopefully, this negativity will go away again very soon and we can continue performances like in the Burnley game.’

After initially losing his place in the Chelsea defence earlier in the season, Rudiger actually started three of Lampard’s final four matches in charge of the club and is expected to start once again under Thomas Tuchel against Tottenham on Thursday.

David Luiz was sent off as Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Wolves

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton has backed the decision to give David Luiz a red card in Arsenal’s defeat to Wolves on Tuesday evening.

Nicolas Pepe gave the Gunners the lead in the first half but Mikel Arteta’s side were reduced to 10 men shortly before the break when David Luiz was sent off for clipping Willian Jose inside the box.

Arsenal, who went on to lose 2-1 at Molineux and also had Bernd Leno dismissed in the second half, were furious with Luiz’s red card and plan to appeal the decision.

But Walton has supported the call made by referee Craig Pawson, who went with VAR’s decision and did not use the pitchside monitor.

‘Intent doesn’t come into the law because you can’t read what’s in a player’s mind,’ Walton told BT Sport.

‘So you go by his actions and his actions there were rather careless.

‘In terms of bringing the player down, yes, he doesn’t make an attempt on the ball, that’s the important thing, had he made an attempt on the ball it would’ve been a yellow card plus a penalty kick.

‘But because he hadn’t made an attempt on the ball, and the ball is not within playing distance that becomes a red card and Craig Pawson’s got no opportunity at all to issue a yellow, it has to be a red card and a penalty kick.

‘That’s about the third time that David Luiz has been sent off for a similar offence, so you say players should learn and understand, maybe so.’

When asked if Arsenal will appeal Luiz’s red card, Arteta said: ‘I would say yes, let’s go straight away, but we have to speak and make the decision [about] what’s the best thing to do.

‘If they have another 50 different angles to watch it, maybe I will be surprised. I looked at seven different angles and I cannot see any contact there.

‘To play with 10 men for 45 minutes in the Premier League without your centre-back, against this opposition, of course it changes the game.

‘It was a big decision, if they got it right and can justify they got it right I put my hand up and apologise. The way we lost the game is where it really hurts, it’s painful.’

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal - Premier League
Hector Bellerin was furious with referee Craig Pawson (Photo by Matthew Ashton – AMA/Getty Images)

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin couldn’t resist a sly dig at referee Craig Pawson after the Gunners’ unbeaten run was ended by Wolves on Tuesday night.

The Gunners dominated the first half at Molineux and took a deserved lead through a fine effort from Nicolas Pepe.

Mikel Arteta’s side had several chances to double their advantage but their night collapsed just seconds before the half-time whistle when David Luiz was sent off for bringing down Willian Jose, even though replays showed there was minimal contact.

Ruben Neves converted the resulting penalty and Wolves took the lead shortly after the break via a stunning strike from Joao Moutinho from long-range.

Arsenal’s night went from bad to worse when Bernd Leno was sent off 15 minutes from time for handling outside the area and Wolves saw out the victory against a nine-man Gunners side.

While Leno’s was widely accepted as a sending off, Arteta was furious about Luiz’s red card and says he’s watched numerous replays and cannot see any contact.

And it’s clear what Bellerin thought of the officiating at Molineux as the Spaniard took to Instagram with a cryptic post hitting out at referee Pawson.

Bellerin posted a caption-less photo of Pawson fist-bumping with Wolves captain Connor Coady, with the Spaniard looking on.

The former Barcelona man did later concede that Arsenal’s disciplinary record is not good enough.

Bellerin says it’s particularly frustrating as it feels like the club are defeating themselves by playing with 10-men.

‘One hundred per cent [we’ve had too many red cards],’ said Bellerin.

‘We’ve shown that when we’re 11 against 11 on that pitch, it’s completely different. We had complete control in the first half and we probably should have been 2-0 up by the end of it. We paid for those mistakes.

‘I always say that teams are not beating us, we are losing against ourselves. It’s for us to learn. Hopefully this will be the last time. We were on such a good run, great momentum, great confidence in the team.

‘We just need to forget this step because situations like this are not going to happen very often. We’ll go on to the next one.’
