According to health officials, Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more serious complications.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled chia seeds are advised not to consume them. The FDA recommends opening the bag and discarding the product in a secure trash container so it cannot be eaten by people or animals. Customers may also return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
