For the county faithful, it felt like the last straw. Jacob Bethell, a bleach-blond youngster with a batting average (25) not much higher than his age (21), and as many first-class hundreds as you or I (zero), was - hey presto! - England's Test No 3. Was nothing sacred any more? When it comes to county cricket's role in Test selection, the answer is: absolutely not. Which invites a further question: is that necessarily a problem?

Ashley Young has admitted that it would be 'a dream come true' to play against his son in the FA Cup. Young, 39, has enjoyed a distinguished career that has seen the veteran make 724 appearances for the likes of Watford, Aston Villa, Man United, Inter Milan and Everton. The defender, who still regularly features for the Toffees, won the FA Cup with United back in 2015-16 and has played 31 times in the competition.

Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi could face a charge from the FA after writing 'I love Jesus' on his rainbow-coloured captain's armband. The defender opted to scribble to three-word statement on his armband during Palace's 1-1 draw at home against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon. FA rules allow a number of 'initiative slogans/emblems', such as Rainbow Laces, but forbid 'political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.' Now, according to ESPN, Guehi could face backlash from the FA, as another law states that captains 'must wear an armband which is simple and conforms to the requirements of Law 4 relating to slogans, statements, images and advertising.

The 2025 Club World Cup will be contested by 32 clubs from the six continental confederations and will be the first edition in this format to take place in the United States. Chelsea and Manchester City will be the two English clubs competing in the tournament as a result of winning the Champions League in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
