Alex Mitchell was looking to build on a breakthrough season when, one Thursday morning this summer, he encountered a problem most people would find incredibly disconcerting. 'I woke up and I couldn't really move my neck,' Mitchell, the Northampton and England scrum-half, tells Mail Sport matter-of-factly. After a campaign which had seen him win the Premiership title and become his country's first-choice No 9, Mitchell's complaint came out of nowhere.

Aston Villa and England defender Tyrone Mings feared his career was over after 'exhausting all avenues' of recovery following a terrible ACL injury sustained on the opening day of last season. Mings had three operations to try and fix the problem and was finally rewarded for his perseverance when he played his first Premier League game for 15 months in Wednesday's 3-1 win against Brentford. Trying to stay calm and collected afterwards, the popular 31-year-old admitted: 'There were times when I genuinely did think I would not be able to recover from this knee injury, such was the severity and complication of it.

The volume of dissent increased when he turned for the tunnel without making his way any closer.
