Zac Efron's 'Back to Normal' Face Has Everyone Talking As Expert Weighs In On What Happened

Zac Efron, who arrived atDancing with the Starsto support his brotherDylanduring their latest taping, has unexpectedly become the center of a renewed public debate after a photo of him went viral for reasons that hadnothing to do with the show.

The image spread across social platforms shortly after, where Zac attended with his younger sister Olivia. The actor had spent the night cheering every time Dylan appeared on camera.

But the online reaction quickly zeroed in onZac's face, with thousands of viewers saying he finally looked "normal" again.

"People don't understand that jaw surgery completely morphs your face… I get so annoyed when people say he got botched filler or implants. The man literally had to get his face put back together," one fan wrote.

In the hours after the photo went viral, fans split into two camps.

Some defended Zac, echoing the long-standing explanation that his altered appearance traced back to the 2013 accident in which he shattered his jaw after slipping and hitting a granite fountain.

"He almost di*d because of the accident," one supporter said. "Do not assume every person in Hollywood gets surgery for vanity reasons."

"He's finally back to normal," another celebrated.

Others, however, were far more skeptical. They pushed the narrative that Efron had undergone cosmetic procedures that ended up hurting his image.

"If you undergo cosmetic surgery for vanity, then you're responsible for whatever mean words and depression follow," a critic wrote.

The divide became sharper when another commenter questioned the official timeline entirely:

"The jaw injury happened in 2013. But his face completely changed in 2021, eight years later. It had nothing to do with the injury; it was a cosmetic change done years later," the user said.

This isn't the first time this argument has been brought up in online debates surrounding Efron's appearance.

Critics insist that no reconstructive swelling or muscle imbalance would appear nearly a decade after the injury. Supporters argue the opposite, defending Efron's version of events.

Efron said that his jaw muscles grew over the years as the result of a 2013 fracture

To understand whether the timeline is legitimate, it's necessary to turn to Efron's own recorded comments.

In 2022, the actor explained that after the 2013 fracture, the muscles in his jaw and face began overcompensating to stabilize the injury.

His masseter muscles, he said, grew disproportionately large as a result. When he briefly stopped physical therapy while filming abroad, the imbalance intensified, creating the dramatically widened jawline that went viral in 2021.

"The masseters just grew… really, really big," Efron said at the time.

Experts in maxillofacial surgery support the plausibility of this.

According to a2025 studyby the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, long-term swelling, nerve disruption, compensatory muscle hypertrophy, and asymmetry can take months or years to resolve, and can even reappear when rehab lapses.

Some patients require continuous therapy to manage the effects.

Despite this, cosmetic speculation has only grown louder. Plastic surgeons have listed every possibility from fillers to implants to jaw contouring.

Plastic surgeons believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle, with Efron trying to "fix" his jaw with cosmetic procedures

In 2023, celebrity facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sam Rizk toldThe New York Postthat, in his opinion, Zac Efron's explanation does not fully account for the extent of the changes.

"He probably took the opportunity, in addition to correcting it, to do something better," Rizk said.

According to him, the actor's jawline shows signs of additional procedures.

"He might have had jaw advancements where they pull the chin a little bit more forward because his chin looks a little bit more prominent. Or a chin implant or mandibular angle implants in the lower jaw."

Rizk also pointed to changes around Efron's eyes and brows.

"He always had a straight eyebrow, and now they have more of an arch," he said. "His eyebrow is a little bit higher, which indicates he had some type of brow lift or he had Botox."

Rizk said he also noticed fuller cheeks.

"Cheeks don't get fuller as you age," he explained. "You lose volume in the cheeks when you age. When he was younger he had a flatter cheek."

While he did not believe Efron had cheek implants, he said the actor "most likely" received filler.

"Be nice." Efron's fans pushed back against criticism of the actor's looks

Alec Baldwin's Thanksgiving chaos to Martha Stewart's burnt bird: Stars' holiday disasters exposed

The holiday season has a way of humbling even the most prepared hosts — and celebrities are no exception.

BetweenMartha Stewart, Guy Fieri and Chrissy Teigen's kitchen mishaps, the Baldwin family's photo chaos and a few emergency room visits, these celebrity Thanksgiving moments show that even the stars can't escape holiday mayhem.

Here's a look at some famous feasts that didn't exactly go as planned.

Guy Fieri holds a squeeze bottle while standing in front of a crowd of onlookers and cameras.

Guy Fieri's holiday didn't go as planned one year when he tried to deep-frya Thanksgiving turkey.

"One of my favorites was when the deep-fried turkey craze started," the Santo Tequila co-owner told Fox News Digital.

Fieri noted that he learned the technique from "a guy named Kim Gardner," who showed him how to make his first deep-fried bird. It turned out so well he wanted to make one for his family. But instead of measuring the oil properly, everything spiraled.

"Just like every video that you see on TikTok, it is a fireball of flames," he said.

The pot spilled, and the burner tipped, sending flaming oil across his patio and into the yard. "

My flip-flop is melted to the stand. So, I got one flip-flop on one flip-flop off," he added.

At that point, the turkey shot out of the pot and skidded across the lawn.Fieri ran after it.

"Grabbed the turkey. Now it's kind of coated in some leaves and such, and I grabbed the hose, and I'm hosing the turkey off. And I'm, it was about eight in the morning, so I'm hosing the turkey off."

The reaction from inside the house was immediate.

"There's no way in hell I'm eating that turkey," he recalled.

A photo of Martha Stewart

Before she became a household name for flawless dinner parties, Martha Stewart admitted, herfirst Thanksgivingas a newlywed was a total disaster.

In a 2017 interview with theDaily Mail, Stewart said she wanted to impress her new in-laws and volunteered to host. She woke up at 3 a.m. to stuff the turkey and put it in the oven, then went back to sleep.

That's when things went up in smoke.

"I preheated the oven to 500 degrees, then forgot to turn it down to 325," she said. "I woke up to smoke and flames."

Stewart rushed to a nearby farm, grabbed the last turkey they had, and even salvaged the stuffing from the burnt bird. Dinner was six hours late but saved.

Stewart, of course, has come a long way, sharing a photo on Instagram on Dec. 2, 2023, showing the heritage turkey she roasted for a friend's Thanksgiving buffet.

On her 2024 podcast "Call It What It Is" with co-host Jessica Capshaw, Luddington said she decided to skip her usual pre-cooked bird from Whole Foods and roast her own.

"I didn't grow up with it," the British-born actress said. "So, I just inherited all the Friendsgiving traditions around me."

That year, the turkeytook nearly 12 hours to cook, and things went downhill from there. "I gave food poisoning that year to everyone that had the turkey," she admitted. "People were throwing up that night."

Ross Duffer Tells 'Stranger Things' Fans How to Set Up TV Settings for Season 5 Premiere: Turn Off 'Garbage' Like Motion Smoothing

Ahead of the release of "Stranger Things 5," which dropped on Netflix at 8 p.m. EST on Wednesday, series creator Ross Duffer posted a PSA on Instagram, walking viewers through their television settings to ensure that everything is set up for a proper viewing experience.

With the camera facing his TV, Duffer narrates, "A little PSA before you watch tonight. I want to make sure that your TVs are set up properly." While acknowledging that different TVs will have different displays, he navigates viewers to settings, then picture mode settings and then expert controls before encouraging people to turn all of the expert controls off. On Duffer's TV, this included dynamic contrast, super resolution, edge enhancer and color filter, all of which he deemed "garbage."

More from Variety

View this post on Instagram

Duffer then goes back to picture options, where he shows that noise reduction should be turned off, as well as, "the worst offender of all, truemotion or smoothmotion," which creates "the dreaded soap opera effect."

Duffer continues that on most TVs, enabling the expert vision— in his case, Dolby Vision-Movie Dark mode— will resolve most of the issues, but not all of them. He thus encourages viewers to double check, and warns that "whatever you do, do not switch anything on 'vivid' because it's gonna turn on all the worst offenders. It's gonna destroy the color and it's not the filmmaker's intent."

Duffer would understand that intent, as he and his brother Matt directed three of "Stranger Things 5: Volume 1's" four episodes. The one outlier, Episode 3, was directed by Frank Darabont. Volume 2 will release the next three episodes of "Stranger Things 5" on Christmas Day and then the finale will release in theaters and on Netflix on New Year's Eve.

At least 44 dead and hundreds missing after fire engulfs Hong Kong tower blocks

At least 44 people have been killed in a huge fire that has engulfed multiple high-rise buildings in Hong Kong's Tai Po district.

There are reports that some residents were trapped in the building, and police say 279 people are still missing.

More than 760 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze on Wednesday afternoon, with pictures showing flames and thick clouds of grey smoke billowing from the towers, dominating the city's skyline.

Three men have since been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter connected to the fire, according to local media reports, and an investigation has been launched.

The blaze broke out at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex at 14:51 local time (06:51 GMT) and was classified as a level five - the highest in severity - by the fire department at 18:22.

The cause is unknown, but the flames are believed to have spread quickly through the bamboo scaffolding that covered the outside of the buildings, which were undergoing renovations.

Among those hospitalised, 45 are in a serious condition. The injured were sent to hospitals in various districts.

Firefighter Ho Wai-ho, 37, was among those killed in the blaze. He was found collapsed at the scene about 30 minutes after contact with him was lost.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the deceased and my heartfelt sympathies to their families and the injured. We will provide all possible support," he said.

The fierce heat of the blaze, as well as dangerous debris has hampered rescue efforts.

"The temperature inside the buildings concerned are very high, so it's quite difficult for us to enter... and go upstairs to conduct firefighting and rescue operation," said Derek Armstrong Chan, the deputy director of fire services.

The fire has yet to be extinguished and officials have said they were unsure when it would be.

Wang Fuk Court was built in 1983 and is made up of eight tower blocks that provide 1,984 apartments for some 4,600 residents, according to a 2021 government census. Seven of the towers have been affected by the fire.

Some residents have told local media that the fire alarms did not sound, and when the elevators stopped working, they struggled to get out. A local councillor said many of the people who lived at Wang Fuk Court are elderly.

There were also reports on Wednesday night of blasts being heard from inside the buildings, and fire hoses were struggling to reach the upper levels of the 31-storey towers.

Preliminary investigations found that the rapid spread of the fire was suspicious, Hong Kong's security secretary, Chris Tang, was quoted to have said in local media. This included the use of polystyrene to seal windows.

Police have also evacuated nearby buildings, and several temporary shelters have been opened. One of the shelters, located over the road from the housing complex, was deemed unsafe as the fire continued to rage, and evacuees were directed to another further away.

An officer at a temporary shelter told the AFP news agency it was unclear how many people were unaccounted for because residents were still trickling in late into the night to report missing family members.

There is a large evacuation zone around the fire, roads are closed and more than 30 bus routes have been diverted, Hong Kong's Transport Department says.

China's President Xi Jinping has expressed sympathy for the victims and urged that every effort be made to put out the fire and minimise the losses, state media reported.

The use of bamboo scaffolding is common in Hong Kong and it is one of the last cities in the world to still use it in modern construction.

According to local media reports in March, the government's development bureau has been trying to phase it out, in favour of metal scaffolding, due to safety concerns.

It has been 17 years since Hong Kong faced a level five fire, when a building constructed in 1962, Cornwall Court, burnt down. Four people were killed in that fire.

Additional reporting by Tiffany Wertheimer.
