Fascinating photos of Victorian Britain revealed: St Paul's Cathedral and Barnard Castle feature in stunning archive acquired for the nation
Today, if you look across at St Paul's Cathedral from the other side of the Thames, the sprawling steel of the Millennium Bridge might be firmly in your eyeline too. But, back in the 19th century, there was no crossing on that part of the river - as one old photograph reveals. The unencumbered view without the bridge was snapped in the latter part of Queen Victoria's reign by pioneering photographer George Washington Wilson.
