‘He had a really bad game’ – Paul Scholes questions Bruno Fernandes despite stunning goal for Manchester United

Paul Scholes says Bruno Fernandes had a ‘really bad game’ against West Brom and kept ‘giving the ball away’, though praised his goal and believes Manchester United must build their team around the midfielder.
United lost ground in the title race after only drawing 1-1 against the relegation-battling Baggies on Sunday, falling seven points behind leaders Manchester City who have a game in hand.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side struggled to create chances and gave a laboured performance, though they did at least claim a point thanks to a stunning volley from Fernandes on the stroke of half-time.

While Scholes was effusive in his praise of the Portuguese playmaker, he did feel Fernandes’ standards dipped a little at the Hawthorns – though he believes more players need to step up to help him.
Speaking on MUTV’s Group Chat, Scholes said: ‘It was a great goal. His record is sensational really and he was actually having a really bad game yesterday.
‘He was giving the ball away an awful lot, which he does in games anyway because he plays with that element of risk which as a United midfielder you should always have that.
‘But he is capable of creating goals and creating special moments in games, and yesterday was no different.’
Asked if United are becoming too reliant on Fernandes, Scholes continued: ‘No I don’t think so. That is his role in the team.
‘You have to remember United paid a lot of money for this type of player.

‘He is a player whose job it is to create goals and score goals. Now he is doing that and he’s doing it better than we ever would have imagined.
‘But other players need to step up now. Martial, Rashford – we know the quality these people have – Greenwood, Cavani as well. These have got to really step up and contribute.
‘If you’re going to win the league, you need a couple of forward players who are going to get you maybe 60 or 70 goals [combined]. Have we got that at the minute? I’m not sure we have.’
