Rafa Benitez among bookmakers’ favourites to replace Neil Lennon as next Celtic manager
Neil Lennon has resigned as Celtic manager and there are some very interesting names among the candidates to replace him in the post.
The Bhoys are 18 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and are set to relinquish their title to their bitter rivals, leaving Lennon little option but to leave the club.
Five straight wins were keeping him in the job, but a 1-0 defeat at Ross County on Sunday proved to be the Northern Irishman’s last match in charge.
John Kennedy has been appointed caretaker manager after working as Lennon’s assistant, so he has been installed as favourite to get the job on a permanent basis as he has the first chance to prove himself.
After Kennedy, the bookmakers see some much bigger name managers as being in contention to replace Lennon.
Current Scotland manager Steve Clarke and current Belgium boss are next in line behind Kennedy, followed by former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, who is currently out of work.
Then there are some really glamorous candidates for the Hoops, with Rafael Benitez and Frank Lampard both rated at 7/1 with Betfair to be the next Celtic manager.
Celtic’s principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, said in a statement that Lennon will be difficult to replace, commenting: ‘Neil is a Celtic legend both as a player and manager. He has given so much to the Club, and with his success over the last number of years – including winning a Treble in his own right – he will be very difficult to replace.
‘We thank Neil sincerely for all he has done for the club and we wish him every success going forward.’
