Joe Root became the first player in history to score a double century in their 100th Test as England piled on the runs in the series opener against India.

Root scored 218 from 377 balls to help England make a brilliant start to the India series and surpass 500 in their first innings of the tour.

It was the highest Test score by an Englishman in India, with Root surpassing the 207 Mike Gatting made in 1985.

In the process of his stunning knock, Root surpassed former wicketkeeper-batsman Alec Stewart to become England’s third-leading run-scorer of all time. Root is now behind only Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook.
