Mikel Arteta hits out at ‘surprising’ decision on David Luiz red card appeal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits he has been left surprised that an appeal over David Luiz’s red card against Wolves was not overturned, when Jan Bednarek’s for Southampton against Manchester United was.
Luiz was shown a straight red card for tripping Willian Jose when he as through on goal as Arsenal went on to lose 2-1 to Wolves.
The red card appeared harsh as the contact appeared to be accidental, but the ban stood and the Brazilian misses Arsenal’s trip to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Bednarek was dismissed during the 9-0 trouncing from Manchester United as he received a second booking for a foul on Anthony Martial, but his ban has been rescinded on appeal.
Arteta admits he has been left surprised by one ban being successfully appealed and not the other.
‘It is what it is,’ said Arsenal. ‘We did what we had to do after the game which was put a case together and hope that the decision would be overturned but it didn’t, surprisingly when the Southampton boy got it.’
Arsenal released a club statement on Thursday which read: ‘The Football Association have confirmed to us that the red card given to David Luiz on Tuesday against Wolverhampton Wanderers will stand.
‘We have worked really hard to overturn David Luiz’s red card. We presented our case to the FA but are disappointed that our appeal has been unsuccessful.
‘We accept the FA’s decision and continue our preparations for Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.’
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl was pleased to see his man avoid a ban, though, feeling it was the right decision.
‘I knew that Jan was not guilty for having made a foul because I saw the scene after the game so it was the only possible decision for me,’ said the Saints boss.
