Rory Kennedy is taking a wait-and-see approach to the upcoming Ryan Murphy series,Love Story, about the life anddeath of her cousin John F. Kennedy Jr., and his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
During an appearance at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the director of Queen of Chess said that she isn't sure if she'll watch the show, and that she's reserving judgment on the project—for now.
"I was quite close to John and continue to miss him every day. It's been a great loss for our family and a great loss to the country. They are people we feel very close to and saddened by their loss,"she said, perVariety. "But there are opportunities for younger people who did not know their story to learn about it. Depending on how the show is done, it could also be a wonderful thing to their character, their personality, their contribution to society. We will see."
Her initial reaction is significant given that Rory's wedding will almost certainly be mentioned, if not featured inLove Story; John and Carolyn were flying to Cape Cod for the celebration when their plane tragically crashed into the ocean, killing the couple, andCarolyn's sister Lauren.
It's also notably measured, especially when compared to the reaction from JFK Jr.'s nephew, Jack Schlossberg.
Schlossberg, who is the son of Rory's cousin (and John's sister) Caroline, has been outspoken about the series, previously calling it "grotesque."
"Lately, my news feed has been filled with pictures of my uncle, John F. Kennedy Jr., a great man," Schlossberg said on social media last summer. "For those wondering whether his family was ever consulted, or has anything to do with, the new shows being made about him, the answer is no. And there's really not much we can do."
"For the record, I think admiration for my Uncle John is great," he continued. "What I don't think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way."
