Thomas Tuchel explains why he was delighted with Edouard Mendy in Chelsea win over Tottenham

Thomas Tuchel hailed the ‘excellent’ Edouard Mendy for his role in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Tottenham on Thursday.
The Blues are undefeated since the German’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, winning two of their three games under his guidance with no goals conceded.
Jorginho’s first-half penalty was enough to seal all three points against Jose Mourinho’s side, moving Chelsea back up to sixth and within four points of fourth place Liverpool.
Tuchel was quick to praise the defensive performance of his side and for the way they were able to constantly build attacks from the back – singling out Mendy for particularly high praise.
‘We played very strong in the build up with the back three who are playing with confidence,’ Tuchel said. ‘Don’t forget today Edu, he was amazing with the ball at his feet, he opened some situations for us when we were under pressure, he had an excellent game in the build-up, very strong.’

Andreas Christensen was called upon in the second-half, replacing Thiago Silva after the Brazilian pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury.
In what was just his sixth appearance in the league this season, Tuchel was pleased with what he saw.
He added: ‘And like I said, the back three, also with Andreas coming in in a difficult situation, they were amazing in the build-up. I the two sixes, [Mateo] Kovacic and Jorginho, they played very well together and it was hard to press us up high up the pitch because we have the quality and the confidence.
‘This is the aim, we have the quality and confidence to bring the game up to the opponent’s half, to attack deep and to be encouraged and structured enough to have short distances to counter press because mistakes always happen, this is the goal.’
