"Puppies are not plushies, and it's a damn shame that Kim missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups and instead is being rightly slammed on social media for that," Ingrid Newkirk, the founder ofPeople for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said in a Dec. 28 statement.

Newkirk also emphasized that both Kim and Khloé — who also gifted a dog to her family on Christmas — should "call PETA or a local shelter the next time" they are looking to add a dog to the family.
