Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf to Star in Broadway's 'Death of a Salesman' Revival

Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf will return to Broadway in the Arthur Miller classic "Death of a Salesman."

A revival of the acclaimed play will run for 14 weeks at the Winter Garden Theatre, which recently housed George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Mamma Mia." Previews will begin on March 6, 2026, ahead of opening night on April 9. Joe Mantello, whose many credits include "Wicked," "Take Me Out" and "Assassin," will direct the adaptation.

More from Variety

Scott Rudin and Barry Diller are producing "Death of a Salesman," marking their second collaboration of the season following the new play "Little Bear Ridge Road," starring Metcalf and directed by Mantello. Rudin is working to remount his career, which was derailed by allegations of abusive behavior.

"Death of a Salesman" premiered on Broadway in 1949 and has been revived many times over the years, most recently in 2022 with Wendell Pierce and Sharon D. Clarke in the lead roles. The original production, directed by Elia Kazan and starring Lee J. Cobb, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award for best play.

Lane, a longtime theater veteran known for "The Producers" and "The Lion King," will portray Willy Loman, a traveling salesman in pursuit of the American Dream. Metcalf will play his wife, Linda Loman, alongside Christopher Abbott and Ben Ahlers as their sons, Biff and Happy. Lane described his latest collaboration with Mantello on this particular play as prophetic.

"In 1995 while rehearsing a Terrence McNally play with Joe, he turned to me one afternoon out of the blue and quietly said, 'Someday you and I are going to do 'Death of a Salesman." And true to his word, 30 years later, that day has come," Lane said in a statement. "I couldn't be more thrilled and honored to follow in the footsteps of so many great actors in tackling the role of Willy Loman, especially with the brilliant Laurie Metcalf by my side and the remarkable cast Joe is assembling. It's a privilege to do what is arguably the greatest drama of the twentieth century, and like all great plays it always seems to speak to us anew each time we see it."

Metcalf, whose stage and screen career has included "Roseanne," "Lady Bird" and "Three Tall Women," won't have much time in between "Death of a Salesman" and "Little Bear Ridge Road," which is running at the Booth Theatre through Feb. 15.

"Collaboration iseverythingin the theater. I am lucky to be going from one exciting project to another with Joe Mantello – and in the very same season," Metcalf said. "Joe and Nathan are longtime collaborators, and my shared history with — and deep respect for — them makes what might otherwise feel daunting feel familiar, and absolutely thrilling."

Mantello and producers are working with the Miller estate to deliver a production that "promises to channel 'Salesman's' dynamic power in a completely new way."

"Part of what's so exciting about Joe Mantello's approach is that he has been immersing himself in our extensive archives and interacting with Arthur's earliest drafts of 'Salesman' — sounding out a deeper understanding of the play's inner workings," said Kate Miller, trustee of Arthur Miller Literary and Dramatic Property Trust. "It's been wonderful to work with someone who is successfully finding new ways into a play that's been thoroughly studied, taught, and performed by the greatest artists in the world for nearly eighty years. Mantello's approach will bring 'Salesman's' impactful and ever relevant commentary on the American dream to modern audiences, and we're so eager to see it come to life."

Mantello added, "It's been incredibly rewarding to work closely with the Arthur Miller Estate who've so generously opened the archive and encouraged real exploration. Looking through Miller's early drafts revealed insights into the play's first impulses — including some surprising theatrical ideas that feel both deeply familiar and unexpectedly modern."

William and Kate Are Skipping King Charles' Christmas Lunch Due to Massive Tension

Prince William and Kate Middleton are allegedly skipping King Charles' annual Christmas lunch...again.

  • The Waleses will allegedly snub the event due to "nonstop disagreements."

  • Wills and Kate also skipped Charles' lunch last year in what was described as a "coup."

Happy Holidays, someone get Netflix'sThe Crownon the phone, because there's even more drama than usual over in Buckingham Palace. And by that we mean Prince William is allegedly skipping King Charles' annual Christmas lunch. Again.

Rob Shuter'sShuterScoopreports that between "nonstop disagreements" and "icy moments," Prince William's decided to spend the day with Kate Middleton's family instead of the royals.

Per a source, "William and the family will dutifully go to church with big smiles plastered on, but they're not expected for lunch at the big house. It's been an extremely difficult year for William and Catherine."

ShuterScoop also reports that King Charles plans to invite his disgraced brother to lunch—a pretty shocking move, if true. (Reminder: the royals do Christmas in Sandringham, where Prince Andrew is soon to be exiled.)

Last year, there were reports that William and Kate hosted their own "rival" and more "middle class" (um, kay) Christmas at their home in what was described as a "coup" against King Charles. Apparently, the couple were worried that certain royal traditions made them look "weird," and a friend told theDaily Beastthat "there's always been a slightly covert, rival Christmas party at [William and Kate's] house, but it's going to be much more obvious this year. If they post pictures, it'll be an official coup attempt."

I mean...guess it wouldn't be the holidays without some family drama?

Any Lucia Lopez Belloza arrived at the airport in Boston excited to embark on a surprise trip home to spend Thanksgiving with her family in Texas. The 19‑year‑old freshman at Babson College was nearing the end of her first semester studying business – a major she hoped would help her father open his own tailor shop one day.

But instead of getting to hug her parents and two little sisters and tell them how college was going, Lopez Belloza was arrested by federal immigration officials moments before getting on her flight on November 20. She was told there was a problem with her boarding pass, and on her way to customer service she was "surrounded, (placed) in handcuffs, and dragged out of the airport," her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, told CNN.

In the roughly 48 hours after, Lopez Belloza was sent to Texas and then Honduras, the country where she was born but had not seen since she was 7 years old, when her parents brought her to the US to seek asylum.

Lopez Belloza was deported despite a federal judge's order prohibiting the government from removing her from the US while a lawsuit over her arrest played out in court, according to her attorney.

In an email to CNN, the Department of Homeland Security said an immigration judge ordered Lopez Belloza's removal in 2015, and that she "illegally stayed in the country since."

Pomerleau told CNN Lopez Belloza was never shown a warrant, a removal order or given any explanation for why she had been detained. "I still am not convinced that she ever had an order removal … she wasn't shown any proof," he said.

Pomerleau said the only records he's found in government databases indicate her case was closed in 2017.

The student's father, Francis, told theAustin American-Statesmanthat his family was denied asylum, but that they had been assured by the judge that they did not have deportation orders. The outlet only identified him by his first name due to his immigration status, it said.

After her arrest, Lopez Belloza was taken to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's regional headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts, according to Pomerleau.

From the field office, she was transferred to a military base in Massachusetts and then flown to Texas, where she spent the night in a detention facility before being deported to Honduras the following afternoon.

"She had chains around her ankles. Handcuffs on her wrists," Pomerleau told CNN. "Put on a plane and deported to a country she hadn't been at in like 12 years. It's beyond the pale."

A college dream in limbo

Lopez Belloza – who spent most of her life in Texas, where her father is raising her two younger sisters, ages 2 and 5 – decided to enroll at Babson after visiting colleges across the country.

She had worked hard throughout high school and received a scholarship to study in Massachusetts, her lawyer said.

"She wanted to study business and help her dad create his own business one day, a tailoring shop," Pomerleau said. "He hand-made suits for her so she could wear them to interviews and go to … internships, things like that."

Speaking toThe Boston Globe, who first reported the story, Lopez Belloza said she had been eager to return home to Austin and share her college experiences with her family. "I have worked so hard to be able to be at Babson my first semester, that was my dream," she told the Globe from her grandparents' home in San Pedro Sula.

CNN has reached out to Babson College for comment.

Pomerleau said the focus now is on returning Lopez Belloza to the US.

"We're going to ask that the federal judge require the United States to bring her back to the United States because it is an egregious violation of her due process rights."

19-Year-Old Man Mauled to Death by Lioness at Zoo in Front of Other Visitors After Scaling 20-Foot Wall into Enclosure

Gerson de Melo Machado was mauled to death by a lioness after sneaking into the big cat's pen at a zoo in Brazil on Sunday, Nov. 30

NEED TO KNOW

  • Machado, 19, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, had previously attempted to sneak onto a flight to Africa to pursue his dream of training lions

  • "My feeling is one of total powerlessness, and this feeling causes enormous pain in my soul," child welfare counselor Verônica Oliveira said of Machado's death

A teenager was mauled to death by a lioness after sneaking into the animal's pen in front of fellow visitors at a zoo in Brazil.

On Sunday, Nov. 30, Gerson de Melo Machado climbed a wall about 20 feet high to break into the big cat's enclosure at Parque Zoobotânico Arruda Câmara in João Pessoa, Paraíba, local news outletsO Correio Brazilense,O GloboandFolha de São Pauloreported.

The botanical zoo, which is home to hundreds of animal species, confirmed Machado, 19, was mauled to death in a news release shared onInstagram.

"Once the incident was confirmed, the park was immediately closed, following all safety protocols," the zoo wrote. "The teams mobilized the competent authorities and provided the necessary support for the service and work of the experts."

The zoo announced that it would remain closed amid the ongoing investigation into the incident, while reassuring visitors that it has "strict" safety standards.

"The Arruda Câmara Park is in solidarity with the family of the boy who passed away, deeply regrets the loss and wishes strength at this difficult time," the news release concluded.

The zoo's security team allegedly attempted to stop Machado as he climbed into the lioness' enclosure, but he moved too quickly,O Correio Brazilensereported, citing a statement from the City Hall of João Pessoa. The state's Civil Police forensics team has not yet ruled out that his actions may have been suicidal.

Machado had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had been in several institutions, perO Correio Brazilense. He came from a family with a history of mental health issues and grew up in "extreme poverty."

Child welfare counselor Verônica Oliveira told the outlet that all four of his siblings were adopted except for him when they were removed from their mother's custody and placed for adoption while he was still very young.

He went on to have several run-ins with the police throughout the years, having begun to steal in his childhood. Just last week, Machado allegedly came to Oliveria for help with seeking employment after being released from prison.

"He was 19 years old, but when he spoke, I believe his cognitive ability was no more than that of a 5-year-old,"  Oliveria toldO Correio Brazilense.

She recalled that Machado previously snuck into the landing gear of a plane heading towards Africa in pursuit of his dream to tame lions, but was detected and referred to the Child Protective Services at the airport.

"Gerson is the result of a system that always excluded him; he's been caged for years. Today was the culmination of a 'Chronicle of a Death Foretold,' " Olivieria told the outlet of his death. "I hope the lesson remains and that the countless Gersons we care for every day have a happier ending. My feeling is one of total powerlessness, and this feeling causes enormous pain in my soul."

"Leona, the lioness at Arruda Câmara Park, is doing well and will continue to receive all necessary care," the zoo wrote. "After the incident, she was immediately evaluated by the technical team and remains under continuous observation and monitoring, as she experienced a high level of stress.

"It is important to emphasize that euthanasia was never considered," the zoo continued. "Leona is healthy, does not exhibit aggressive behavior outside the context of the incident, and will not be euthanized. The protocol in situations like this provides exactly what is being done: monitoring, behavioral assessment, and specialized care.

"The Bica team, veterinarians, handlers, and technicians are fully dedicated to Leona's well-being, ensuring that she recovers, stabilizes emotionally, and resumes her routine safely," the zoo concluded.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attend a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Florida on Sunday. - Chandan Khanna/AFP/Getty Images

Inside the Witkoff Group's exclusive Shell Bay private members club in South Florida, the delegations from Washington and Kyiv faced each other for "tough but very constructive" negotiations over lashings of Ukrainian Borsch, a beetroot and cabbage soup which one attendee told me was "very rich with meat."

But its serving, along with Holubtsi, traditional meat and cabbage rolls, was seen as a welcome nod to Ukrainian culture – a deft diplomatic gesture as the US tries to coax Ukraine towards compromising on a peace deal with Russia.

A source with direct knowledge of the Florida talks – involving US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner – tells CNN the intensive negotiations were a "step forward" and "built on progress in Geneva," where a first round of discussions on US proposals to end the Russian war in Ukraine were held last week.

"It would be very premature to say we finalized everything here as a lot of things have still to be done," the source told CNN.

"But the meeting was very focused and the most problematic aspects of the peace proposals were discussed in detail," the source added, hinting that tentative progress in some areas could be made.

One of the most "problematic aspects" of the original 28-point US peace proposal was the stipulation for Ukraine to formally renounce its aspiration, enshrined in its constitution, to join NATO – a key Russian demand to end the war and something Ukrainian officials continue to reject.

However, the CNN source now says negotiators have discussed a possible scenario in which Ukraine would effectively be barred from joining the US-led Western military alliance via arrangements that would have to be negotiated directly between NATO member states and Moscow.

"Ukraine will not be pushed to officially, in the legal sense, reject this aspiration," the source told CNN.

"But if the United States has something to agree upon with Russia bilaterally, or if Russia wants to receive some assurances from NATO multilaterally, then this is not engaging Ukraine in the decision-making process," the source added.

A final decision on what would be a highly sensitive compromise – likely to be unpopular among NATO states – has not yet been taken and would ultimately be made by the Ukrainian president, the source stressed to CNN.

But it suggests that, as US-Ukraine negotiations proceed, and as Witkoff travels to Moscow for talks at the Kremlin, creative solutions to tiptoe around Kyiv's red lines are being explored.

Another one of those problematic areas is the Kremlin demand, which also found its way into the 28-point US peace proposal, for Ukraine to surrender territory in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine that has been annexed, but not yet conquered, by Russia.

The US plan suggested the region, which includes a "fortress belt" of heavily defended towns and cities seen as crucial to Ukrainian security, become a Russian demilitarized zone, which Moscow would administer but not deploy military forces into.

The source, who has direct knowledge of the negotiations, tells CNN that discussions are also progressing on this issue – one of the most controversial in the negotiations.

"The idea to give up the control to Russians, where it would significantly weaken Ukraine's defense and make further potential aggression more likely to happen and significantly decrease Ukraine's capability, this is out of the scope," the source told CNN.

"But that doesn't mean that there are no potential ways of preserving the constitutional provisions and keeping Ukraine's security," the source added.

However, the source refused to discuss what specific options are under discussion, saying the issue is "too sensitive."

"I really believe that if it becomes public, we may ruin the potential solution," the source told CNN.

There may be another spoiler unmasked in the days ahead too: a Kremlin that has so far refused to curb any of its maximalist demands to subjugate Ukraine before ending the war.

Amid hints of Ukrainian compromises being forged by US negotiators, the next and bigger challenge in America's shuttle diplomacy may be getting Russia to accept them.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that he had spoken with the leaders of the UK and France along with Witkoff - ahead of the US envoy's meetings in Moscow.

"Together with French President @EmmanuelMacron and with the participation of UK Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer, we just spoke with the head of Ukrainian delegation Rustem Umerov and US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff following the Ukraine-U.S. delegations' meeting in Florida," Zelensky said on X Monday.

"It was an important briefing, and we agreed to discuss more details in person," he added.

'Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' Star Whitney Leavitt to Make Broadway Debut in 'Chicago' as Roxie Hart

Whether or not #MomTok survives, at least we know Whitney will.

Whitney Leavitt, best known for starring in the Hulu reality series "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives," has set her Broadway debut. She will play Roxie Hart in "Chicago" at the Ambassador Theatre for six weeks from Feb. 2 to March 15.

More from Variety

The news comes just after Leavitt's recent finish as a semifinalist on Season 34 of "Dancing With the Stars." Her run on the ABC dance series was hotly debated, with many considering her the most skilled contestant and speculating that the Nov. 13 release of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" Season 3 caused fans to vote against her. Despite being eliminated, she and her partner Mark Ballas recorded a version of the freestyle dance they hoped to perform in the finale, which was set to a mashup of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and the theme song from "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives." Their taping of the dance was released alongside a lengthy interview on Alex Cooper's podcast "Call Her Daddy," which was recorded in collaboration with ABC.

Leavitt has long been unabashed about her ambitions as a performer. She was absent for the first half of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" Season 3 and controversially revealed that she only returned to the series in order to have the opportunity to audition for "Dancing With the Stars," also admitting that she attempted to negotiate a role in a scripted series in exchange for her appearance in "Secret Lives."

"Chicago" is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The book was written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Ebb. Currently, Roxie is played by Kate Baldwin. The cast also includes Sophie Carmen-Jones as Velma Kelly, Tam Mutu as Billy Flynn, Alex Newell as Matron "Mama" Morton, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
