Age will never stopDick Van Dykefrom putting on a show!

On Sunday, Nov. 30, the legendary entertainer, 99, and his wife,Arlene Silver, opened up their home in Malibu, Calif, for a Vandy High Tea charity event raising funds to benefit The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the Dick Van Dyke Museum, which is currently in development.

Produced by Chris Isaacson Presents and hosted by Stu Shostak, attendees at "Vandy Manor" enjoyed two hours of conversation, Q&As and sing-along performances from Van Dyke and his special guests.

"There are several reasons for having these — all good — but mine is to revive the art of conversation," the comedian explained. "I don't care if you're on a street, you're in a bus or in a restaurant, everybody's looking at their phones. Nobody talks. I've seen young couples having dinner together and they're both looking at their phones. I may be the only person in the United States over 10 who does not have a cell phone. I don't have a phone."

Joking that he's almost always played an "irate and cantankerous" old man, Van Dyke noted the best way of life is actually "to have a serene attitude about things at this age."

"You're a very special, almost 100-year-old person," Silver, 54, gushed, highlighting her husband's upcoming 100th birthday on Dec. 13.

"I've never met a 100-year-old person," Van Dyke revealed before his wife pulled out a giant version of his recent PEOPLE Magazine cover, teasing, "We're going to reveal the cover of the Sexiest Man Alive!"

Looking at his photo on the Dec. 8 issue, Van Dyke quipped: "Oh my God. Isn't that great? At least I didn't end up fat and bald!"

Then came the first song of the day, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from the titular 1968 film starring Van Dyke, performed by his quartet, The Vantastix.

Music is a central theme throughout the event, with interludes of "You Two" — the iconic actor's favorite song — fromChitty Chitty Bang Bangand "Supercalifragilistic" from Disney's iconic 1964 musicalMary Poppins,in which Van Dyke starred alongside Julie Andrews.

At one point, a fan asked Van Dyke what his favorite part of the Christmas season is, which he said was always "the singing, the caroling." On that note, he and The Vantastix sang "Caroling, Caroling" by Nat King Cole.

Another fan asked him what his daily life in Malibu looked like, which Van Dyke said included a lot of singing with Silver. In fact, he said he discovered her musical talents by casually singing together, teasing that once he found out that, "I was sold! On the spot!"

The next performance was "Carolina In the Morning," originally by Gus Kahn and music by Walter Donaldson. Shortly after came another rendition, again by Van Dyke and The Vantastix, of "Old Senility" — a parody of Bruce Reitherman and Phil Harris' "The Bare Necessities" — followed by the Morey Amsterdam-penned lyrics toThe Dick Van Dyke Showtheme song.

The event concluded with a final sing-along to the belovedMary Poppinssong "Let's Go Fly a Kite," which Van Dyke first sang with the late David Tomlinson in the film.

Simon Cowell Apologizes for 'Being a Dick' on 'American Idol': 'I'm Not Proud of It'

Simon Cowell is well aware that he gained a reputation for harsh, cutting criticism as a judge on "American Idol." The record exec and TV personality apologized for some of his comments on the show in a new interview withThe New York Times' podcast The Interview.

"I did realize I'd probably gone too far," Cowell said. "I didn't particularly like audition days, because they're long and boring. I would get fed up. And of course, out of a hundred nice comments, what are they going to use? They're always going to use me in a bad mood. I got that. What can I say? I'm sorry."

More from Variety

When asked to identify what specifically he was apologizing for, Cowell responded with, "Well, just being a dick."

"I wasn't trying to be a dick on purpose," Cowell said. "All I wanted with these shows was to find successful artists to sign to the label. So when all these people were coming in and they couldn't sing, we would say after 10 seconds, 'You can't sing.' Not, 'You're going to be brilliant.'"

Alongside Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, Cowell was one of the original judges on "American Idol," panelling the first seasons of the singing competition series from 2002 to 2010. Prior to that, he was an original judge on "Pop Idol," the British series that inspired "American Idol." As the U.S. series grew into a pop culture juggernaut in the aughts, Cowell became a pop culture fixture for cutting down celebrity hopefuls with his grouchy zingers, the most brutal of which finding a robust life online in the early ages of video sharing on the internet.

"I'm not proud of it, let's put it that way," Cowell continued. "When I hear about these clips, I'm like, 'Oh, God.' But then again, the upside is that it made the shows really popular worldwide."

Cowell is currently making rounds to promote his Netflix series "Simon Cowell: The Next Act," which will follow the exec as he mounts the search to assemble a new boy band. The show premieres on Dec. 10.

The actress has been datingher 28-year-old boyfriendsince 2022 and has previously opened up about the "pressure" to grow her family after turning 40.

In a 2022 interview withElle UK, she discussed the topic and revealed that she'd had some of her eggs frozen.

"[The] pressure... [about] kids, and should I have more, and why haven't I, and all of that, which is a really loud noise. Biology is incredibly cruel on women in that decade – that's the headline, or it certainly was for me," she shared.

"Then I got to 40 and I froze some eggs. Having been really focused on the need to have another baby, I'm just like, if it happens, it happens. That kind of existential threat has dissipated."

'I won't let it happen': Kelly slams Pentagon probe, accuses Trump of 'bullying'

U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said Monday he will not be silenced or intimidated by the Trump administration's investigation into him over a video urging military members to ignore what Democratic lawmakers describe as unlawful orders.

"Donald Trump has had one political play: bullying his opponents into silence," Kelly said at a press conference. "He did it as a failed casino owner who bankrupted his properties and screwed over his contractors. He did it as a reality TV host known for firing people. And he's done it as president, who tries every day to intimidate people with no regard for the rights or well-being of the American people."

"I'll say this for the guy, while he's never seemed to do much right, for most of Donald Trump's career, bullying has worked out for him," Kelly added. "But not now, because I won't let it happen."

Sen. Kelly accuses Trump of 'bullying' him into silence

Kelly's comments come a week after the Pentagon announced it had opened an investigation into him for "serious allegations of misconduct." Officials did not say what the allegations involve.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT |Pentagon opens investigation into Sen. Mark Kelly over misconduct allegations

The announcement followed the release of a video featuring Kelly and other Democrats, who urged service members to refuse unlawful orders after expressing concerns over U.S. military strikes on boats suspected of smuggling drugs in the Caribbean. The message did not cite specific examples or say where such orders might originate.

Republicans, including President Donald Trump, sharply criticized the video, accusing the lawmakers of encouraging the military to defy the commander in chief.

"This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Kelly, a former Navy pilot and NASA astronaut elected to the Senate in 2020, said the investigation would not deter him from fulfilling his duties. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Kelly could be recalled to active duty for a possible court-martial or face administrative action.

As if the Thanksgiving blast of cold air wasn't enough, an even colder shot of arctic air will dive into the country by the end of the week bringing even colder temperatures.

This time daily records could be broken from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Midwest and even into parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Dozens Of Records Could Fall

We could see several dozen daily record lows across more than a dozen states either tied or broken Thursday and Friday morning. These stretch from the Plains and Midwest to the Northeast. Places like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa, as well as La Crosse, Wisconsin, could all break record morning lows.

We are talking not just temperatures below freezing, butbelow zero.A pretty significant chunk of the Midwest and Northern Plains will wake up Thursday morning below zero.

The afternoons won't offer much warmth either. More than a dozen record cold high temperatures could be felt from Missouri to Michigan, and a few even sprinkled in the Northeast.

Here's a look at where the record cold will be.

Timing The Arctic Blast

This next round of cold will begin arriving in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Wednesday. Highs across portions of North Dakota and Minnesota will only make it to the single digits.

Thursday:Thursday morning, the big freeze will dive down as far south as Oklahoma. Morning lows will drop as much as 10 to 15 degreesbelow zerofor a wide swath of the Midwest and Northern Plains. Even Iowa and southern Nebraska will feel the bitter cold, sub zero temperatures.

If the forecast for Des Moines holds on Thursday morning, and they drop to their forecast temperature of -12 degrees, this would be the coldest temperature ever recorded this early in the season.

Meanwhile, places as far south as Kansas and Missouri will bottom out in the 20s.

Afternoon temperatures won't help much as temperatures will stay below freezing for millions Thursday afternoon. Temperatures across portions of the Midwest will run 20-25 degrees above average. Green Bay, Detroit and Milwaukee could all break records for coldest high temperatures.

Even places as far south as Oklahoma City will struggle to make it above freezing.

The widespread freezing temperatures will extend well into the mid-South and eastward into the Ohio Valley.

Friday:Friday morning the cold dips even further south and east. The 20s will be felt as far south as the Texas Panhandle and Little Rock. The Midwest and Ohio Valley will largely start the day with temperatures in the teens. And even the busy I-95 corridor will wake up in the low 20s on Friday morning.

Baltimore, Philadelphia and even New York City could break record lows Friday morning.

The Northeast will struggle to make it above freezing Friday afternoon. While the Midwest and Plains begin to "warm up," temperatures will still only be in the 20s for afternoon highs.

Will There Be Any Snow?

I'm glad you asked! This front will be on the drier side, however, there will be a little snow possible for the extreme northern tier of the country ahead of the cold front for parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley and interior portions of the Northeast. Most areas outside the Great Lakes snowbelts shouldn't pick up more than a dusting from this.
